This is cropped from a bigger image, hence the arm across her chest. If it's hard to see I apologize for not being darker on the lines.
Just wanted to get some comments as to what I could do to improve before I ink this part (the bigger image that it's a part of is kind of tentative, otherwise I'd just use that.)

Just so you know, Shuri really IS a guy, but he loosk very much like a girl, and acts like it too. And yes, she's also intended to look about 14/15. And, yes, it's supposed to fade like that as it goes downward.

He looks so sad! sad.gif

But as for improvements, I dunno. I don't know much about this style. Is the odd shortness of the arm (his arm, not the one going across him - that one is proportioned nicely!) in comparison to the body - and especially the head intentional? In fact the head seems a little big. And what about the lack of fingers? But like I said, I'm no expert on anime style drawing. I want to say there should be shading, but then I remember that you said you're going to ink it, so I assume you're going to add the shading then? Is it meant to be a color image?
Shurimaru2008-09-22 18:43:55
Whether I color it later, I don't know. But yesh, that arm is pretty short. I'm terrible with proportioning limbs, and can't really tell on my own work what's too short or not.
The lack of fingers is because this picture is in the latter phases of sketching, and I usually detail in the hands just before I start inking. (or even after I've started inking, because hands hate me. stabbed.gif )

And, she's meant to look sad, because she just told Seraku how much she loves him, and he's all "but you're not a dracnari."

So many people draw in a manga style, I sometimes forget that this game is hosted in the western hemisphere.

Oh, is that what it's called? 'Manga style' not 'anime style'?
Shurimaru2008-09-22 20:47:48
Well, I can draw in other styles, with other media, but manga-style is what I use to draw people.
Am I wrong?! confused.gif

There's no wrong. smile.gif
Saaga2008-09-22 20:53:11
...I don't draw manga-style!

EDIT: but I suck anyway, so tongue.gif
Kharaen2008-09-22 21:03:53
You aren't wrong. It's just a pet peeve of mine that globalization is back firing tongue.gif

Anime - japanese animation.
Manga - japanese graphic novels...

I'm not sure which one is best to call the style, but I figured that still drawings would be manga, motion/animation would be anime.
Shurimaru2008-09-22 21:05:04
They're really just the same thing, but anime-style is a bit more exaggerated on the speculars.
Seraku2008-09-23 17:18:41
I like it Shuri. It's looking great so far! ohyeah.gif Heh, sometimes I forget the height difference between Shuri and Seraku but I'd love to see the full inked picture.

Hey, it's Zappa!
Ah, I was going to comment on the portait, not the avatar. Right. Well, the arm looks odd but it was mentioned already. The clothes look minimalistic but I assume it's supposed to be like that. I don't have anything to say apart from that, as it looks nice.
Shurimaru2008-09-23 18:01:16
Cuber, you win. You were the first to reecognize my avatar. Your prize? My recognition.

Anyway, yeah, I plan to ink it if I ever end up satisfied with how I can get Seraku to look.

And, if I like that, I'll probably Photoshop in some colors. Maybe make an artisanal out of it.

Thanks for commenting, everyone!

My fighter of choice is Dizzy.
Shurimaru2008-09-23 22:24:08
I use Zappa (for those who hadn't guessed.)

Raah. Dizzy angers me, but the one I hate most is Johnny...like, total anti-Zappa character. So I use Sol as backup.
Seraku2008-09-24 01:56:15
That avatar is mighty distracting.. I may just pick up guilty gear if I actually have some money to spend (which is a slim possibility..)

Anyways, looking forward to the completed picture

Hopefully these comments aren't too late to help you out!

I think your drawing isn't quite there from a design aspect. You should include more of your other character in the drawing to create more interest in the drawing. You don't have to have a full second character, but give the viewer more of an idea of what's going on in your drawing.

Just doing a quick search on Google I found this video that you might be interested in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKorJBhmERk&feature=user. There are many other videos by the same person, so check them out. Also do yourself a favor and spend $10-15 and pick up "Drawing the Head and Figure" by Jack Hamm. I love that book and refer to it all the time.

I think for the drawing you are doing you may not want to be so worried about proportions. I think it may be more of one of those situations where you are describing what your character is feeling through your drawing. If you want him to seem like he's being chastised reduce his shoulder width. If your character is about to yell at the person speaking to him make his arms longer and hands bigger. Also put a little more expression into his face.

Good luck with your drawing!
