Computer Problems

Since I can hardly stay on the internet for more than ten minutes at a time, I'll keep this brief:

For the past three or so days, my internet keeps disconnecting every 2 to 10 minutes. Sometimes it'll only disconnect on certain things (For example, MSN. It then refuses to let me log back in until I fully reset my router.), or it'll just drop everything (Warhammer, Skype, MSN, etc.) at once. Sometimes it'll drop random stuff from the other house computers. Sometimes it won't fully disconnect, and just leave me with a status message saying it's at 'Limited Connectivity'. At the constant rate it's doing this, it's impossible for me to play or do anything online- No Lusty, no Warhammer (which I got yesterday sleep.gif ), MSN, Skype, internets, nothing. As a matter of fact, it's disconnected once while I'm typing this post. The glories of copypasta!

I'm not hugely computer savvy, so any help would be appreciated. I've got Comcast as my ISP, with a router. Yeah, this might be the nail in the coffin, but I've got Vista. It's been working perfectly fine before this.

So, yeah. Halp, plx? Seren's gonna have their VA nominations soon (okay, whenever Kinson wakes up) and I need the net for Chemistry homeworks. sad.gif

1) What do you need to do to come back online?

2) What is happening with the other computers on your network? Also, if not Vista, what operating system are they using?

3) What's the make, model, and firmware version number on your router?

I bet your router is just toast. suspicious.gif Especially if you need to reset your router just to get back online. My suggestion would just be to get a new router and see if that helps.

1. Disconnect/reconnect/reset the router. Either manually by unplugging and replugging it, or through making the computer reset it via the Network/Connections deal.

2. The same. I can hear by brother squealing upstairs every time it crashes. Almost makes it worthwhile. suspicious.gif We're all on Vista, aside from my brother who is using XP.

3. Linksys, Wireless-G Broadband Router, model WRT54GS ver. 6.

I told my parents this, too, and they're just blaming it on Warhammer. doh.gif

Silly parents.

It's the router though, or the cable plugging it into the wall.

Try flashing it with this firmware:

Shut down the hardwired computer. Unplug or turn off your modem. If you left your network name as the default, turn off all the other computers or disable their wireless connections. (If you didn't keep the default, you can skip that.) Grab a pen and push the reset button on the back of your router until the lights start blinking strangely. This will take about 20 seconds and reset your modem to factory defaults. Reconfigure your router.

Depending on when your modem was actually made, this may only allow the XP computer and the hardwired computer on. If that's the case, go get new firmware from Linksys's website.

It doesn't even have a full firmware version for that model. Did you bother to check? tongue.gif

I bothered to CTRL+F the model number and see if it was listed. tongue.gif

Yeah, well, it's the micro version only, and 100% irreversible.

Furien was here posting, then he went away. Oops. Maybe it really is a hardware issue. tongue.gif

I was just watching and upgrading my firmware. We'll see how this works.

Here's hoping. If it doesn't get fixed, go for this router:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16833124190

It's the one I use, and it's amazing. I flashed it with the Tomato firmware, http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato, and I've only ever gotten d/c...once in the 5 months or so I've had it.

Everything seems stable! Thanks loads. content.gif
