Oi.
You know, I was going to say something about "independent research" or maybe even suggest that a private detective be hired, but, really. Why would you be sending money to Nigeria? She claims she's not an easy mark, but, good grief. At least they threatened her with criminal charges if she sends any more. The sad thing is, apparently that's the only thing she thinks might deter her.
I just have a hard time believing an otherwise reasonably intelligent person would get sucked in by such a famous scam.

The very worst part, IMO, is that she paid 100K at first and then they kept on milking her for more and more money. I mean, even if I were stupid enough to dish out 100K and they didn't deliver? I somehow doubt I'd be willing to give them even MORE money!
I sure wish I had 400K to be scammed out of though.

You might say that, but I could easily imagine how much I would resist backing out and admitting that you've just thrown your money away. If you're going to fall for the scheme in the first place, you're going to fall for their attempts to milk it even more because you will want to justify the reasons for sending them money in the first place, rather than standing there looking like an idiot who's just given 100k away for nothing. It is all about pride! (Though it begins with sheer stupidity or naivety.)

But, see, I don't got that much pride. After that first 100k didn't get me my promised millions, I'd be too pissed off to be worried about pride.
Ilyarin2008-11-18 19:58:12
Well, chances are you wouldn't fall for this scam in the first place! But through the eyes of the people who do, you're really going to want the cash, so you'll be willing to make another payment because, in the end, you'll be rolling in it! It's so criminal. Poor people.

You've never felt pot committed in a poker game?

No... the few times I've played poker, if I started getting in too deep with bad cards, I folded everytime. I do not bluff well and I'd rather keep some chips.
Prolly why I'm not a good poker player!

Do what I do. Always bet. No matter what. They never know what I have.

Well, sometimes, you have a hand that has a 45% chance of having the best possible hand. (random number)
And there is a 30% chance that the person across the table from you has a better hand.
And so over the round, you've but maybe 20% of your chips into the pot, and now, the person across the table doubles it, requiring you to put in another 20% of you chips.
For most people, the pride of being so close, and having allready spent 20% will keep you in the game.
So its not really about bluffing, but just about having only the second best hand, rather than the best hand.

No, I do pretty well, mostly because no one knows what I have. Ever. Sometimes not even me.

I clicked around a bit, following reading that article, and all I have to say is the world is a weird place.
The most interesting articles were:
Bird eaten by giant spider. Woman falling for the nigerian money scam in the year 2008. And someone was murdered by way of bow and arrow. Granted, that's terribly sad, but I find it incredibly fascinating.

The first send was $100, not $100k.

Both the Poker Brat and I agree, Pot Committed is an excuse for losing your shirt and shouldn't actually exist for any good player.
Ba-zing.
Casilu is one of those fish maniacs that loses 90% of the time and then picks up a boat on the river with 6-10 offsuit after shoving their stack.
