As I have wanted to always try DMing a game, I was thinking this summer might be a good time. I want to know how many people would be interested in playing a 3.5 game. (In general I don't like some of the things in 4e, and the fact that I have yet to play a 4e game)
Summer would be May to about end of July/mid August. I would prefer to host it on something such as MapTool I like face to face games, and that is as close as it can get for me... I would most likely do the first session of actually play to be of a short 'intro' to see of my players like what I'm doing, and if they think I'm doing a good job. I would like 3-5 players.
A small list of notes:
Any players that would be interested, be aware this would be my first time DMing as I said before, and you may have to bare with me at parts here and there.
I am in USA, time zone of EST, and would like to 'meet' at least once a week, if players would like to meet more than that, I would be up to doing more if there is time in everyone's schedule.
As it says it would be a 3.5 game, although you could use a 3.0 book or maybe a 4e book (both of which would small changes here and there).
Still looking for players,but due to lack of player sign up, start date is TBA. Once my player limit is reach we will talk about meeting times (or if it can't be done over something such as MapTool, I will think about doing it over the forums.

How do people generally get together for these games? I know it's online, but is it through IMs, chats, Skype, a special roleplaying program, what?

Depends on the DM, I'm looking for about 3-5 people. I would like to at least use MapTool to it.
