Guild Ranks

Is anyone aware if it's particularly hard to make amends to that part of the code? I simply loathe how the large variety of guild ranks is seeing no use and would love for the privileges to be spread more evenly, perhaps more of them added, some neat RP ones too, and for favours to have more weight.

I doubt it'd be difficult at all, but you'd have to give detailed suggestions to even have it considered, and even then, I wouldn't count on it happening. Some ranks are simply stepping stones to other ranks, and that seems intentional to me.
Kiradawea2009-06-09 11:59:58
Well consider the Celestines. I can't think of anyone that's between rank 12 (my rank) and rank 19 (previous leadership). There really is no reason to work to boost my rank either, except for the sake of RP. Mechanically there's little difference between the two ranks, even though they require a LOT of favours. Favours aren't given out the same way as city favours either, since there's no real reason to do so, again besides RP.
Nariah2009-06-09 12:10:54
It's more that the bulk of privileges comes at the lowest rank and then the rest comes from positions anyhow. Then there's the scarce, really useful GR19 abilities. Like that's gonna happen naturally? I'd rather see them spread more evenly and strength of a favour boosted.
Shiri2009-06-09 15:18:34
I don't think anyone in almost 5 years has reached naturally 19. There have been some natural 15s+, and a bunch of people who were promoted to 15 for secretary or something and advanced from there, but that's about it.

I agree that compressing it to be more like communeranks would be a great deal. But you don't need to add more privs - it'll be fine if people have some motivation to bother trying to favour you up ranks, but not enough that a huge proportion end up at 6 like with communes.

It is a shame that many of the names either admin or players spent a while thinking up will go to waste, which I can somewhat cynically imagine will end up being a reason to veto the whole plan, so if you can think of something to do about that (they're compressed such that you can choose?) it might help...

That would be pretty awesome. smile.gif

I posted some threads eons ago (not on this account) about either compressing guildrank to match cityrank, or allowing guild administrators to assign which privs come at which rank to make things easier to manage. Doesn't seem to be anywhere on their priorities... it's annoying, but meh.

As for the guild rank names, for every uber cool one there's a lame one. A 'cry in the woods'?

1. Which is which is highly subjective.
2. Worse, it's probably subjective between the guild and the admin.
3. Some of them are arranged in such a way that they work better as a complete set (if you cut all the MD ones out, you'd be missing a bunch of fae...I think. I forget what their new ones are, I only remember the old "pooka fondler" and company. dry.gif)

So just sacrificing a bunch of them is probably suboptimal.
Unknown2009-06-09 16:01:10
It's not subjective, it's flexible. Admins are elected bookworms, not tyrants. I doubt there'd be many problems.
Kiradawea2009-06-09 16:09:42
Why sacrifice at all? No need to compress if you just don't make it take an insane amount of favours to go up a rank. I love the idea of giving the administration the ability to decide when to grant certain guild powers. Heck, I'd be happy with some emotes at certain ranks. For example, Guildrank five Celestines can Bless, rank 10 can benedict and rank 15 can soothe. It doesn't have to be much, just something neat that you can show off.

I have been wanting to get BT guildrank names changed since before Ried's election. Unfortunately, I hear it's like fighting a losing battle with Estarra unless we have a really good reason.

Regardless of how easy it is to move through ranks, 20 is still a lot more than is necessary for it to function. Just make six, like with cities/communes. Give readlog at 2, require a leader to outguild at 3, inguild/outguild at 4, favours and GTS channel at 5, enemy/unenemy and protection from outguilding by less than two leaders at 6. Rest comes with positions.

As long as the position names are kewl I'm happy, as no one can see your guildrank unless they're in your guild. And gives me some incentive to stop slacking on my tasks and get the next one.
Nariah2009-06-09 16:55:24
Kira is so reading my mind, things like certain emotes, aka RP powers, would be awesome to be granted at certain ranks. Nihilists have NILBLESS, each Guild could for example have three neat ones?

I'm at work so I'll compile some list of what I had in mind later but I'd be rather adverse to just 6 ranks. I am rather fond of there being such a variety, just not what is allowed per rank and how hard it is to move ranks. At worst, I suppose 10 ranks would not be that bad either.

Speaking of rank names... 'a Pale Rider of the Long Undoing' anyone? 'a Demon Palatine of the Planispheres'? I am also particularly fond of the old 'Despoiler of Graves'! wub.gif

(Those are ex Nihilist ranks, they have been changed since!)

The only BT guildrank I like is "Cloud Stalker", sadly. The rest are so... repetitive.

Actually, here's an idea:

Every guildfavour from a GM, GA, or GC would equal one rank. So if I'm GR4 and I get favoured by my GA, I'd become GR5, which is currently NOT POSSIBLE. But it should be from GR1 to GR19. Additionally, two favours from any non-GM/GA/GC would equal one rank, so if I'm GR4 and a GR8 favours me, that's halfway to GR5. It would allow for 20 guildranks but also for the possibility of people to advance well beyond GR12/15/whatever's the highest solely based on positions.
Shiri2009-06-13 03:07:12
That would work, but I really like the elegance of the 6-rank deal for some reason. If you make each rank from 1-6 take the 3 ranks in order of the first 18 going up as appropriate, then make 19 for ex-leaders, it seems to add up fine.
Furien2009-06-13 03:33:32
I reject this idea unless one of our six guild ranks for the Moondancers can be the good old Pooka Molester.

(I do like the Moondancer guild rank names, though, they're all very fitting.)
Everiine2009-06-13 04:31:59
I like the 20 ranks. Getting GFs is easy enough, they can be given out for anything.
Unknown2009-06-13 05:00:02
I dunno, I feel like just randomly giving out GFs is... not right. I give out my GF every so often for awesome things, but not every month. But I'm conservative like that, I guess.
Ayisdra2009-06-13 05:07:32
I too like the 20 rank system (rather or not the titles are good or not is something different). GuildFavours should not be easy to get, or at least the higher rank the more difficult the task(s) should be for the GF.
