Guilds should be able to customize the gear which their novices come out of the portal with for a nominal fee. They pick a tunic design, a pack design, a trousers design, between 1 and 3 sorcelglass designs for the vials and, for warriors and bards, a weapon/instrument type and design.

This is a very interesting idea. I don't know if I like it or not, but it's fun to think about...

I could very much see this incorporated with some of the collegium quests - especially geography. Place an npc or two in the shopping districts, have them go to them, flavour story/instruction, pick out the design, it gets "fashioned" for them, send them on their happy newbie way.

Interesting.

Woot idea!

Nice, though I can also see the reasoning that guilds could just produce these packs themselves.
The spiritsingers have a mobile that give out newbie packs for them, wouldn't be too hard to tax the code and make your own packs. It would also mean giving your tradeskillers something to do, as well as being more customizable (new pack setups could be controlled by players rather than requiring the admin to change things)
That being said, Yay for custom packs.

I think the plus here is the second they exit the portal they are part of that guild. It helps with guild RP that way.
though if this is put in I think the items should still have the decay of normal newbie items.

Way back when, when I was an undersec in the Serenguard, I came up and initiated the idea of a "start-up pack" for the guild novices.
The novices were granted a choice between two different packs. One pack contained two clubs, and one pack contained two shortswords. We even began working on designs for Serenguard-specific weapons for the packs.
I like this idea. It gets my vote.
