It is the height of Summer in Gensokyo, and the sun hangs low in the sky as late afternoon prevails. The sweltering heat has laid low many of Gensokyo's residents, including Reimu Hakurei and Suika Ibuki, who are lounging about at the Hakurei Shrine, trying to stay cool as best they can...

"Ahhhh, Reimu. It's soooo hot. Don't we have any ice left?" Suika cried as she dug through the pantry cabinet.

Reimu sighed as she futilely attempted to fan herself. "No, we used it all yesterday for iced tea, remember?"

Suika wailed and stumbled into the common room of the shrine where Reimu was, collapsing into a heap on the floor. "Why's it so hot anyway? Maybe it's because of that silly hell raven again. She never did stop feeding the fires down in the former hell..."

Reimu shook her head. "No, it's far too deep below ground to make it hot up here. Maybe if..."

Suddenly, she is cut off in mid-sentence by a resounding explosion from outside. Reimu and Suika immediately spring up, but then are knocked backward onto the ground as another explosion tears apart the front wall of the shrine.

"What?! What's going o-AHH!" Suika is stopped short as a flurry of flower petals rush inside the shrine and immediately encircle her, tearing at her and leaving wounds where they touched her skin. Reimu looked up from where she lie and squinted in order to see the figure of their attacker silhouetted against the setting sun as she walked up the steps of the shrine to enter the building. The attacker stepped inside, and Reimu was finally able to see the identity of their assailant.

"Greetings, shrine maiden. How are you this afternoon?" Yuka Kazami casually greeted Reimu as if nothing was happening.

"Y-Yuka... what are doing?!" Reimu could barely respond to Yuka's query as she attempted to gather her thoughts.

"Isn't it obvious? I'm destroying your shrine. I'm tired of the shadow it casts over my flower fields during the afternoon. I figure if I demolish the shrine, then my flowers will be able to get all the sun they need, wouldn't you agree, Reimu?" Yuka smiled cruelly as she casually lifted her left arm and unleashed a barrage of danmaku. Another explosion rocked the area as the left wing of the shrine's main building splintered and was reduced to rubble.

Reimu was incensed, unable to believe what she was seeing and hearing. She ran into the room behind her, retrieved her Yin-Yang Orbs and ran back to the main room, only to come face to face with the crown of Yuka's parasol. Reimu froze in fear as she realized what Yuka was about to do.

"Love Sign 'Double... UGH!" Yuka's spell card declaration was interrupted as Suika tackled her fiercely, knocking the parasol out of Yuka's hand and bringing her to the ground. Reimu managed to regain her senses and immediately declared a spell card of her own.

"Dream Sign 'Evil Sealing Circle'!" The Yin-Yang orbs glowed fiercely as Reimu produced a number of charms that circled about her, then flew up into the air and flung themselves at Yuka. Yuka managed to kick Suika off of her just in time to recover her parasol and block the charms with it before jumping backwards, to the outside of the shrine. Reimu and Suika picked themselves up and went to pursue her.

Outside, Yuka had already prepared herself for the battle, holding a spell card in her hand at the ready as Reimu and Suika emerged from the main building. "Flower Sign 'Reflowering of Gensokyo'!" Suddenly, swarms of flower petals like before rushed in from all sides, and enveloped Suika, picking her up in a cyclone and flinging her back down to the ground, out of the fight.

Reimu managed to dodge the attack, and drew a card of her own. "Spirit Sign 'Fantasy Seal -Focus-'!" Glowing orbs of energy encircled Reimu fiercely before flinging themselves one at a time at Yuka, who was hard-pressed to dodge and somersault out of their way as Reimu continued to fling charms at her.

Yuka started to grow angry at meeting such resistance, and so declared another spell card...

"Phantasm 'Beauty of Nature'!"

Suddenly, walls of danmaku bullets surrounded Reimu on all sides, taking up formation in the form of a blossoming flower, before closing in upon Reimu in the center, and though she tried as best she could to dodge, the effort was ultimately futile as Reimu was shot down, landing heavily on the ground in front of the shrine.

Victorious, Yuka gently floated down to the ground in front of Reimu, who struggled to remain conscious. "Silly shrine maiden, did you really think you could defeat the strongest youkai in Gensokyo, in the height of summer, when I'm at the peak of my power? How foolish..." Yuka casually stepped over Reimu as she strolled back towards the half-demolished shrine, intent on finishing the deed. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some work to do."

"Yuka... don't..." Reimu is unable to finish her sentence before she falls to unconsciousness, explosions ringing in her ears as the world faded to black.

-Some time later-

"Shrine maiden... you will regret ever having crossed me."

Reimu heard a voice, but knew not from where it was coming from. Or for that matter, where she was, as it seemed that she was floating in a great void, surrounded by a dark luminescence.

"I have been locked away for far too long. It is time for me to take my rightful place."

Reimu struggled to understand what this voice was. It sounded so familiar...

"My return is nigh, shrine maiden. And when I rise again, you will burn. Gensokyo will burn..."

Reimu suddenly felt light, as if she was rising upwards.

"All will burn! My revenge will be complete! And I shall live again!"

Reimu suddenly gasped and sat straight up, waking from her sleep as Suika and Ran, startled by Reimu's sudden awakening, turned to her and gently eased her back into laying down.

"Reimu, Reimu, relax! We're at Yukari's home! We're safe now!" Suika assured Reimu, who was looking around the room to see Ran Yakumo and Chen sitting alongside her bed as well.

"Yuka... she attacked..." Reimu stuttered and struggled to form full sentences, still shaken from the experience.

Suika lowered her head. "After you were shot down, I tried to stop her again, but she's just too strong during the summer..."

"The Shrine...?"

Ran shook her head and gestured to Chen to bring something to her. "Destroyed, by the hands of Yuka. There is nothing left but rubble and debris. This third loss of the shrine has brought the instability of the Great Hakurei Border to a dangerous point. Without the shrine as an anchor, Yukari-sama is having to expend a considerable amount of effort in maintaining the Border artificially." Reimu went to stand up but was stopped by Suika and Ran. "No, Reimu-san. You must remain here and rest. You suffered injuries during your battle with Yuka. We cannot in good conscience allow you to leave in such a state."

"But the Border...!" Reimu objected.

"Yukari-sama is firmly in control of the situation, she is plenty capable of maintaining the border until you recover from your injuries. Our first priority should be restoring you to full health." Chen at that moment, had returned with the item Ran had requested, a fragment of stone with a charm embedded within it. Ran turned to Chen and asked that she hurry to Eientei and return with a vial of medicine for Reimu. Chen ran out again, and Ran turned back to the bed, placing the stone fragment in Reimu's hand. "This was found amongst the rubble. We thought it might have helped to allow Yukari-sama to better control the border, but this was not the case. We have no idea what it is."

Reimu's eyes widened as soon as she glimpsed the writing on the charm that was embedded within the rock. It read 'Twilight'.

"This... this is... oh no. Ran-san, this is bad. I have to go, I have to fix this." Reimu again attempted to get out of bed, and was forced back into laying down by Suika and Ran, who vehemently protested. "No, you don't understand. This seal, it has nothing to do with the Border. This is the seal I used to imprison Mima!"

Mima. The name sent a shiver down Reimu's spine. It had been over 6 years since she had to seal the spirit away, once she learned what her real aim was, she was too dangerous to allow to roam free. Defeating her wouldn't do any good, she'd just appear in Hakugyokurou, and escape just as easily. So Reimu sealed her away, using the strongest charm she knew. But now she was loose again, and her thirst for revenge was without a doubt more virulent than ever.

"We... we have to find Mima. We have to stop her!" Suddenly, the over-exertion caught up with Reimu, and she quietly passed out, slumping back into the bed. Ran shook her head and tucked Reimu in before turning to Suika.

"Reimu is right, we need to find Mima, and Yuka too! If they..." Suika was suddenly interrupted as Yukari Yakumo walked into the room, visibly disturbed. She looked over at Reimu, and nodded, as if she did not want Reimu to hear of what she was about to say.

"Ran, there is trouble afoot. I've felt disturbances all across Gensokyo, focused around 5 specific areas. Please send word to representatives of Eientei, the Scarlet Devil Mansion, Hakugyokurou, the Human Village and the Palace of the Earth Spirits that they should gather here to discuss the current situation. It is urgent."

Ran nodded and disappeared in a flash of light. Yukari walked over, sat upon Reimu's bed, and sighed before looking over at Suika. "I'm sorry I was asleep during the attack. If I had known, I would have arrived immediately..."

Suika shook her head and dismissed Yukari's comments. "Yukari-san, don't worry about it. You're not responsible for what happened, it was that no good Yuka! Just wait, I'm gonna show her just what happens when you..."

Suika was again interrupted as Ran appeared again. "I have alerted everybody you wished me to, Yukari-sama. They will arrive shortly."

Yukari nodded approvingly. "Good. Together is the only way we'll be able to resolve this..."
