Advance warning - this is quite a tiny issue indeed, but still something that niggles me!
According to the lore wiki, the cost in lessons to go from Inept to Adept in any skill is 89 (5 x 15 + 14), Inept to Master level in any skill is 178 lessons (11 x 15 + 13), and from Inept to Transcendent is 1715 lessons (114 x 15 + 5). Why aren't these numbers evenly divisible by the maximum amount you can learn?
For those of us who know the exact numbers and can afford to learn large portions of skill at once, we generally don't waste any lessons because we are experienced enough to learn precisely what is required, but why not make it a little more straightforward?
I'd suggest either:
The last one is my preference - easy to code, solves the problem rather elegantly, and doesn't encourage any claims for retroactive adjustment.

I'd suggest either:
- require one more lesson to reach Adept, one more lesson to reach Master, and either eight more or three less lessons to hit transcendent, so that if you keep learning in 15 lesson blocks you're not going to be wasting lessons;
- refund lessons if you spend more than you can actually learn over the relevant cap (Adept/Master/Transcendent), so you're never wasting lessons; or
- change the output of ASK (teacher) (skill) so that they tell you exactly how many lessons it will take to reach the next skill rank - after all, hiding that information in-game only penalizes the newbies.
The last one is my preference - easy to code, solves the problem rather elegantly, and doesn't encourage any claims for retroactive adjustment.

I'm fairly certain it only learns the exact number of lessons needed, judging from the recent learning I did.
I may be mistaken, though. I wasn't paying very close attention during the process, but I'm pretty certain I learned a set of 15 lessons (which put me at trans) and only actually used 12.

Huh, there you go, that's really awesome if it works like that already!

It does. I've verified it several times.

I believe this was fixed because originally it didn't work like this so you could learn all the way up to Trans - 1 lesson then learn 15 putting you at trans +14. It mattered for abilities that are determined by the ammount of lessons that you had invested in a skill as doing this would put you above the investment of most others and so things like traps were undetectable or the like.

Is there any reason not to do that?

I believe Achaea has already implemented such... I thought Lusternia did too... Thought it was IRE wide.
Maybe it was a dream...
Zenon2009-09-29 00:35:46
Lusternia has not. I just checked.
Lendren2009-09-29 01:11:44
AB should also list the percentages the same as ASK does.
Lendren2009-09-29 01:13:39
Duplicates are fun.

I shouldn't post during rainstorms.

It's not a generosity thing. The system used to actually allow you to learn over Trans, so the people who were really "in the know" would line themselves up so they could learn 14 lessons over the cap. This would give a bonus for skills that checked your skill level against your opponent's skill level, like illusions or tracking here, or woodlore (I think that's what it is!) on Achaea.

Achaea allow you to SHOW LESSONS IN

Achaea allow you to SHOW LESSONS IN , that either shows how many lessons you have spent in a skill, or how many to reach trans. ASK still only shows the % between skill ranks, however.
I know, I thought it was an IRE wide thing.

It's pretty easy to calculate how many lessons you have in it, what with the numerous scrolls detailing lessons required.

I'm aware of this. The root of this particular piece of conversation was this:
QUOTE

From the OP, which does not exist here, or in Achaea.
And I just realized that quoting does not also quote quotes in the quoted post. This makes the flow of conversation slightly more difficult to follow.
