So, what do people think of it? I've had it at work for the last couple of months but only really started using it properly this week when I saw it was going out to retail. So far it seems pretty good. At least much better than Vista, some nifty features, annoyances like the overzealous UAC in vista seems to have been given a much better balance. Gadgets seem more stable, UI tweaks like the new context menus on applications in the taskbar are good. No compatability problems so far, although haven't installed everything yet. I give this a thumup.gif Although, after the debacle that was Vista, Microsoft have a bit of work to do to win me over! *Throws the Vista DVD in with the Windows ME CD*

Has a fairly major bug it was shipped with, but so little was documented a fix wasn't possible before release :/
As with every Windows, I won't upgrade until the first major service pack, when they have all the known and currently unknown bugs are fixed.

All I'm hearing are good things from friends who've upgraded - though yesterday someone referred to it as 'the most Mac OS-like Windows yet!', which seems to be a fairly common opinion.

Take it as you will - I call that good business practices! Take what's best of the two OSes and you'll dominate the market.

I'm on Ardmore's boat, however - I won't go until the first major SP is out, at least.

I'd have to do a bit of saving before I considered it, though it's an upgrade to my computer so I wouldn't feel so bad about spending the money.

I had the pre-release of it for a little while. Used it a little and I think it was just like Vista. Though, I'm fixing to buy an Alienware PC with Windows 7 installed on it so I guess then I'll be able to really check it extensively.

I'm tempted to get it, given it's only £30. Should I?
Vathael2009-10-24 16:07:25
The way I see it is, they took windows vista, made a few little visual changes to it, slapped a new name on it and redistributed it so that all the people that hated on windows vista would still try windows 7. I personally have had no problems with windows vista and will probably like windows 7. If you like vista then sure, try 7. I'm sure it'll be good either way.

I will ignore the above comment and just say Windows 7 is great.

Ahhh the student deal, yeah sounds good. I'm considering buying a couple of copies to give to family members as I have 2 eligable addresses smile.gif I get work to pay for mine, but £30 is an amount I would be willing to pay for xmas presents tongue.gif

Student deal = free!

Replacing 64-bit incompatible wireless adapter = not free. sad.gif

Anyways, I'm not using it heavily because I don't have internet access on that partition, but it's delivering on its promises. The idle memory processes are substantially lower. The mouse gestures are surprisingly intuitive. Feels like polished Linux.

Just bought a new laptop today with Windows 7 on it. So far, so good.

anyone have concrete data on the Lenovo EE version of Windows 7?

Sure. It's called "branding."

There are five versions of Win7. That ain't one of 'em. The Enhanced Experience tag is just Lenovo's branding for their driver optimization. Any computer manufacturer worth its salt does that. Lenovo claims numbers better than the other manufacturers claim. Are they true? Dunno. This stuff started shipping two days ago. I bet reviews will start to surface in a week or so, though.

I've been using the release candidate for a while now, and since I'm a student and part of the MSDN, I'll get the 64-bit Ultimate version for free. (or at least I think it's Ultimate).

I love it - the best OS I have ever used. My new laptop came with Windows Vista on it. Within 15 minutes of using the computer, I had to restart 3 times due to the system freezing.

It was the first time I'd ever bought a computer and put a new OS on it within the first hour of using it. Windows 7 has never frozen, and it's not annoying with warnings and suggestions as Vista was. Plus all of the productivity features they added are nice, like being able to stick windows to the side, vertically maximize them, etc, etc. Plus the new task bar is sweet.

Great os. smile.gif

It's not a horrible OS if you know what to fiddle with, it's just not good. I much prefered XP.
Unknown2009-10-29 03:35:01
I've been using the released version (not release candidate) for at least a month if not pushing around 2. Comparing my resource usage with Vista, I'd say it cut the CPU by roughly 50% and the RAM by 25%. So far, the only bug that I've found is a second icon of iTunes is placed on the taskbar when it's active, but otherwise, nothing.

It's a win, in my opinion.
Unknown2009-10-29 10:51:04
I pre-ordered my Windows 7, it just arrived last weekend, and I've been using it for a few days now. I love the new task bar functionality. The efficiency of the OS tasks is improved, too. Most of the rest of it seems just like Vista so far. I only ever had one or two very minor issues with Vista on this laptop, and I still think most of the griping about Vista is just bandwagon talk.
Unknown2009-10-29 14:40:38
Important question from the uninformed. Do your Vista drivers still function?
