So I finally found a gameshop in my area. I played Magic for the first time in a while with some strangers and had a lot of fun. Anyone else play?
Diamondais2010-01-25 05:16:13
I do, but I have no one to play with here. I need to teach a friend.

Turns out I live in Nerd Central
But yeah. What kind of decks do you use?

I started Magic with Zendikar(current setting). A friend gave me a starter deck as a present, but she didn't know how to play. She happened to give me the worst deck to start as. Blue/Green landfall deck.
Now, I'm running a black vampire deck, but need some cards here.
People here like Magic, they like to keep it type 2(for tournament purposes), but they play against old stuff too.
ALSO, BRG Jund decks. I hate them. Cascade is broken. Guess what? Out of 10 players, half of them are running some sort of BRG Jund deck.

Pish posh. All of the precon decks are pretty equally bad, but as far as Zendikar mechanics go, landfall is not at all a weak alternative!

I started back in the very beginning, my dad taught me. I've always been a creature deck player. Elf decks overwhelm people quick

Used to play in online tournaments a lot, kept not having to pay too much for the cards as a result, but stopped around Alara block.

I started playing about 10 years ago, but stopped playing about three or four years ago. Still have over 18,000 cards, if anyone wants to buy 'em. Heh.
I have the Xbox 360 game now, but I don't know how much I'll really get into that yet. (It was half price, and I couldn't resist a good deal.)
My friends and I found and played many fun variants of Magic, too. We used the Vanguard character cards. We found an add-on set of rules called Demon Dice that added some little perks obtained by rolling a pair of six-sided dice every upkeep. We made "junk" decks and played some of the worst cards in the game against each other, which was actually a lot of fun because they all sucked pretty badly.
After about the sixth edition, though, it just got a bit silly with some of the mechanics and the rules updates. WotC has been breaking the game in some interesting new ways (as opposed to the old ways, which are mostly cards that are fairly expensive and rare, at least).

I got the 360 game just for the free Planeswalker.
But yeah. I have two decks that I really use, one is a standard Blue. Flyers, Counters, and Unblockables.
The other is a custom deck that a friend of mine put together for me. It's a Phantom deck, specially built to take advantage of their "Unique" properties. Best part to that deck is, even once a phantom loses all it's +1 +1 counters, you have a bunch of defenders, since they remain immune to damage even if they're still just 0 0 creatures.

If you want a good pre-built deck, I recommend "Call of the Kor" from Stronghold. Transferring damage at will is godly.
My favorite deck that I had constructed was my big ol' Sliver deck, complete with the queen and the overlord. Two sets with slivers meant plenty of fodder and sharing of abilities.
Conversely, I also enjoyed a black, blue, and white deck I made one time designed to counter spells and kill an opponent (multiple, rather) with life drain and card loss. It had not a single creature in it, and that scared the heck out of my friends because they never knew what I was going to do next.
Most creative kill I saw was my friend Joe using an infinite mana combo to power a Fork/Brain Geyser combo and deck two of us in one turn. Nothing we could do to stop it.

Sorry about the double post, but I feel this song is worth sharing. I'm addicted to nerdcore rap now, kinda...
Hassle: the Dorkening (hit the play button in the top right, don't watch the badly filmed video)
The lyrics (because he goes pretty fast)

I NEED an Elspeth for my white-green deck Work her up to that 8, play out Platinum Angel, and then activate her ultimate, to become a huge pain in the for everyone that isn't a blue to deal with. (I'm using Platinum Angel + Indestructability right now, but it's less effective. I can't play them both in the same turn.)
Rodngar2010-01-25 18:09:47
I play tournament level Magic in Extended and Standard formats. I love the game to death, and I make a fair bit of money selling prize cards/packs or actual cash prize locals.
EDIT:
I'm currently playing a heavily tweaked Grixis Control deck in Standard, and a funky little dredge combo deck in Extended. I can mimic the sentiments that I despise everything to do with Jund, and it can go.. well.. shove it. :/

Out of curiousity, do any of you know of a decent Mana-Boosting card for a Mono-Blue deck? I always either end up with too much mana, or too little. If I can just skip straight to to much mana, I'll be able to get my big blues into play.
Shiri2010-01-25 19:54:03
The traditional method is running urzatron, 2-mana rocks and a tonne of card drawing, but it depends on your format.
EDIT: P.S I hope Kial is even in the same paradigm as me, it'll be awkward if Rodngar and I are talking about Dredge and Urzatron and everyone else is trying to play legendary octopi or some crap.

Xavius2010-01-25 19:59:00
If you abstract it out, it works in any format. Mono-blue has card advantage and can take advantage of artifact mana sources.
Shiri2010-01-25 20:01:40
I think they left urzatron out of 11th though, and just running rocks and CA isn't gonna get you to high mana costs quite fast enough without also giving you 0 early game.

It's the number one rated nonbasic land according to one WotC editor, and it's the one my friend used to deck two of us in one turn.
Tolarian Academy
Tolarian Academy
Xavius2010-01-25 20:04:14
Urza lands are not standard legal, no. However, when you play standard, that means that no one has Urza lands.
All things with moderation and wisdom, dearest badger.
EDIT:
And banned for good reason! No one wants to play vintage with Tolarian Academy in an affinity deck, unless your goal is to never get invited back.
