Zmud system?

I'm back in black (and white) and in need of a new zMUD system. I had one on my old comp made by Zarquan (I think that was his forum name), but I haven't been able to nab that off the old HD. And I've basically forgotten everything I ever knew about making any sort of scripts other than how to color text and how to writhe when it says I'm entangled. ;_; (I can't even figure out how to do my old targeting system anymore!)

So does anyone know of a good zMUD system out there? I'm willing to pay credits for it, but free would be ideal. :3 Appreciate the help. <3

Of the systems listed on the Lore systems page... 1 of the 4 is for ZMUD, and it's been unsupported and out of date for a long time now. MUSHclient is the client now for systems. I have no idea if anyone makes a distributable ZMUD system.

Up to date/Usable zmud systems? Probably not.

If you want something that will get you through bashing and heal you decently in PK out of the box, the same author (Zarquan/Iasmos) has Treant for Mushclient. Mushclient is free, Treant is free without support. It'll get you back into the game. There's a few systems being pieced together for Mudlet, too, but nothing really near complete as far as I know yet. It's LUA based as well.

If you've forgotten all about how to script in zmud, it might be for the better. It'll let you transition into Mushclient or Mudlet in an easier manner.

There might be a few people still rolling on a zmud system and updating it, but I'd think your chances of finding those people, and then getting them to give it away for free, is a bit slim. I haven't even seen anyone mention selling one in probably a year now.

I posted one on the forums a month ago or something, which I'm intending to keep up to date with, just haven't been able to find the time lately. It's still got some bugs in it that need fixing. ):

Dang, didn't realize zMUD was that out of date. :\\ I really hate MushClient, so I might just have to lay down the mullah for cMUD. *sigh* Thanks.

You may have similar problems finding a system for CMUD. It still has its avid fans, but there isn't as much enthusiasm about it now as there was earlier on.

I am slowly working on updating Catarin's system but I am lazy and it might never get done smile.gif

If you're just hunting you could give Mudlet and the Mantis system a try. Both are still under development and need a lot of polish but it's free and getting better every day.

zMUD is old and kinda slow. CMUD is unstable and not worth the upgrade.

I highly recommend giving MUSHclient another chance. What exactly didn't you like about it?

For me the dealbreaker is that, if there's some kind of mapper for MUSHclient that comes anywhere near to comparable to zMUD's, I've not yet seen it. But I'll admit I haven't looked at all the options out there. I'd be willing to adjust to a different mapper somewhat, but when I find I'm losing too many features that I use constantly, I qualm.

What features?

Ummmmm....
  • I really like that it's graphical and in a separate window, and that I can double-click to walk to a room or browse zones.
  • Support for all those special exits like "touch chimes" to go into my guildhall, or transversing.
  • Color-coding on the rooms for terrain types.
  • Robust speedwalking that automatically handles water, "don't be hasty," the delays going through planar gates, archways, elevators, etc.
  • Costing on speedwalking so I can prioritize directions that take less time or are less dangerous.
  • Ability to stop a speedwalk in progress. Also, ability to set a word or words that, if I see it, will stop a speedwalk automatically, so I can "lookfor moose" and then just start walking along the mountains, and stop when I see a moose.
  • When I look at POLITICS my map automatically puts "do not enter" on village entrances where I am enemied.
  • I can put names on locations so I can just "walk bank" to go to the bank, and there's no limit on how many names I can use.
  • Various things in my system can update my location when I do things like teleport, use my puzzles or milestones, go to havens, sprint and surf, etc. automatically.
  • Automatically handles some of the shifting locations like the nomad camp in the desert.
  • Ability to search for rooms by name, so I can find rooms based on the names I see on WHO, or even type "whereami" to update my location on the map the moment I find it's gotten out of synch.
  • As I move from one area to another, different sets of triggers are automatically enabled and disabled. This is a big one.
  • Ability to store current location in a list and then walk to locations on that list based on which is the shortest number of steps from my current location, such as when I've found elder moonharts needing carving and am guiding a druid to them.
Not all of those are must-haves, but if I lose too many of them, and don't gain too many other cool things in their place, this weighs the balance against MUSHclient.

MudBot's mapper and my own Lua mapper have certain features that are not built into the zMUD/CMUD mapper. The addition of the in-game maps combined with miniwindows in MUSHclient erased my last reason for hanging on to zMUD.

I'm asking mainly because mudlet's mapper is still in the design phase. And this information is the kind of thing that can be helpful.

Like I said, I'd be willing to consider it, though when you start talking about the in-game maps, I get all queasy, because... I'm sure they're very nice if you didn't have a map before, but the idea of using them after using my zMUD map feels like switching from a Maserati (which breaks down now and then, but boy does it scream the rest of the time) to a sled with dull runners.

The scripting in it was waaaaaaaaay too complex. I never could figure any of it out. That was the first client I used when I played Achaea.

At least with zMUD, I learned how to make good triggers and macros, and I could take code already written and customize it, because it was easy for me to figure out. In MushClient, I had to rely completely on what other people gave me, and couldn't really figure most of it out when I looked at it.

MUSHclient uses a real scripting language, which means there are a ton of resources out there, not the least of which are the official Lua site and the MUSHclient forums. Nick is incredibly patient and helpful.

As long as you're the kind of person who can phrase a question well and learn from example, you'll have no trouble picking up MUSHclient.

Your alternative, of course, is to hope that someone who still uses zMUD is willing to give up their system and then help you work with it. Lehki seems willing to try, at least. smile.gif

*sigh* I suppose I'll give Mush another shot, it just feels like regressing to me, not to mention... I really like to be as self-sufficient as possible and be able to customize my system, at least slightly. I was never really able to do that with Mush. ~_~

I'm almost always pro-change, but there are times when I really hate it.
