No more voting ads

EDIT: CONFIG VOTING OFF only removes repeated ads during a Lusternia session. The first ad will always be there when you log in. This will remove ALL the ads, even if they repeat themselves, INCLUDING the first ad.

Think there are too many "vote Lusternia" ads?

Tired of that annoying voice questioning your coolness?

Tired of being told real life is a cesspool?

Tired of being guilted into voting?

Tired of being reminded that you are the reason Fain kills kittens?

Tired of voting and NOT RECEIVING A COOKIE?!

Then this is for you, I've compiled a list of all the the messages telling you to vote and gagged them all.

INSTALL:
Download the file attached in your Treant directory or wherever you have mush installed.
IF you don't have Treant, go to File -> Global preferences -> Lua tab and change trust_all_worlds = true. Then close your world and re-open it.
Copy the lines below in the immediate window (CTRL+I or Game -> Immediate...)
CODE
DeleteTriggerGroup ("Voting")
DeleteAliasGroup ("Voting")
ChangeDir(GetInfo(68))
io.input ("voting.xml")
xml = io.read ("*all")
ImportXML(xml)
ColourNote ("white", "", "Voting Messages INSTALLED")

USAGE:
CODE
voting off (disables the triggers)
voting uninstall (removes the triggers and the aliases)
voting on (re-enables the triggers)

I didn't want to make a plugin just for a few triggers, this is part of my system and decided to posted here in case other people are annoyed by those messages.

I DON'T read the forums, so in case you want to reach me, send me an e-mail. I don't really like in-game messages for ooc stuff.

PS: Power to the Pastries!

That's doesn't work, at least it doesn't for me.

But I have just learn to ignore the ads
Sylphas2010-05-17 15:56:02
It turns off every ad except the one you get when you first log in, at least for me.
Felicia2010-05-17 15:59:14
Yeah, if you config them OFF, only the first ad shows up.

Continual reminders are illegal (according to TMS rules) unless they're opt-in anyway. Only that one log-in message can be mandatory.
Lawliet2010-05-17 19:17:46
And really, is that first one so annoying?

But yeah, I want a cookie sad.gif

Yes, yes it is.

It seems fairly reasonable to me.

TMS voting really is important to keep Lusternia visible, I think. The site gets a lot of traffic, as it's basically the nexus for people looking at new MUDs. Being at or near the top of the list is a major boon. In this genre, I at least think we need every potential new player we can get, even if we have a 95% turnover.

A lot of people don't even use this forum, so not having any reminders at all in-game could lose a big chunk of votes. How else will the admins ask them to vote?
Trace2010-05-17 22:03:00

I like this. I won't be using it, but that's pretty cool. I like to configure it off and let that first message trigger pulling up the site for me otherwise I would NEVER vote, and this way I always do. It does get annoying, even just seeing the one message and I am comforted by knowing I can now easily do away with it if I ever do get too sick of it. Thanks.

I think it's also fairly reasonable to not want to see them.

Using a gag system to suppress voting messages is completely fine, and there's nothing inherently wrong with finding them annoying. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

But it's a very small thing that takes very little time to do, and helps the game grow, so I suppose I'm perplexed by people disliking the login reminder enough to want to gag it.

And you see this message regardless of whether or not you have voted. It is, further, annoying and stale by this point, heh.
Felicia2010-05-17 22:50:03
True, I haven't been seeing it for five or six years running.
Unknown2010-05-18 00:05:57
It's only been around for a year or so.
Shaddus2010-05-18 02:20:18
Not only am I against this, but I'm all for the thread being closed. I realize it won't be, but meh.

Is it -that- bad to see the occasional message to vote, or even the one when you wake up/log on? Does it irritate you so much to see that Lusternia wants you to vote for them, for the wonderful fun you recieve in their free game? No offense, but how ungreatful can you be?

There are an awful lot of not-very-great people. Some of them vote and some do not, it does not have anything to do with whether or not they do!
Unknown2010-05-18 02:24:10
Config voting off never seemed to work for me. But I vote these days sooooo... biggrin.gif

Hey now, we were promised cookies! cookie.gif

That being said, I only get annoyed with voting messages if they actually start insulting specific players, which Lusternia doesn't really do - so I don't find voting messages particularly irritating and am also not sure what the big deal is.

Different people are irritated by different things, really. Getting colourful text after I've logged on... that does not even have the decency to come right when I log on but instead waits a number of seconds so that it occasionally mucks up a defup script I've got by giving me a double-prompt... is annoying, since when it does I have to stop and restart it.
Ardmore2010-05-18 02:42:55
I do not mind the reminder upon logging on... but I would like it to not appear if I've already voted in the past 12 hours.
