Stick it out and work towards whatever goals you have, and strike when an opportunity presents itself. Things that prevent you from getting somewhere now will likely prevent you later too as people tend to have good memories about certain things.

You might consider a new character, so you won't be burdened with previous conceptions. You could go wherever you want that way.
