I'm rather new to designing, and this is not intuitive at all to me. I'm trying to make some origami (one of each of the four types). DESIGN PATTERNS BOOKBINDING gives me this list for origami.
I can change Actionorigami to kirigami or whatever, but this is a very specific list of shapes, none of which I even remotely want. I'm making some designs of the animals in EtherWilde (stag, opossum, peacock). So, I just picked dragon and changed everything else.
My design comes back rejected, because I don't include the word 'dragon' in it. But I don't want a dragon! They suggested using the package, but I have a feeling that because I'm designing kirigami (which is not a package!) they're going to reject that too, since it's not a package, and I don't want to call it one. (Public kirigami I can already make isn't called a package).
Limiting us to this very select list seems very stupid to me, stifling any semblance of creativity. What are my options? And if I do end up having to go with 'package' am I going to have to wait until next IG year, wasting this year's slots, and the gold for submitting it?
13195 Public Actionorigami a folded origami crane
13196 Public Actionorigami a folded origami hippogriff
13197 Public Actionorigami a folded origami package
13198 Public Actionorigami a folded origami star
13199 Public Actionorigami a folded origami flame
13200 Public Actionorigami a folded origami snake
13201 Public Actionorigami a folded origami dragon

You can't make anything but those shapes! I'm not sure why it can't just have the noun 'origami' or 'kirigami/actionorigami/whatever' and be used to make anything either! Your best bet would be to post to the trademaster boar.d asking for more patterns
Naia2012-03-06 02:29:38
You can make a stag origami as suggested above, with the main noun origami. I made a swan this way.
Riluna2012-03-06 02:37:12
But it has already specifically been rejected for not being called a 'dragon'.

They briefly allowed Origami as a noun when they first came out, but then went back to only allowing the specific nouns, much to the general disappointment of bookbinders. You can get around it by making something like "a kirigami package folded into a stag" and describing it as being hollow despite the fact that it's a kirigami.

When you look at an origami pattern of any type, it says the main noun MUST be: , ORIGAMI. So origami should be allowed. Package is what people have been using as the "generic" origami type, since it's the least specific, but honestly. What is the point of the patterns being as unnecessarily restricted as they are? Nothing else has such a weird setup, and it goes against the general trend of "less patterns = better". I have never understood why it can't just be origami across the board. One pattern instead of seven, and infinitely more creative freedom.

I thought it was because you'd make an origami hydra or something, people would try "GET HYDRA" and freak out when it didn't work. Which seems weak as a reason, really.

Whenever I go to use kirigami, I use RELEASE KIRIGAMI, anyway. I don't know whether I'm holding a star or a snake or a dragon. If they all work like this, I'm not sure why the standard pattern isn't just "origami".
+1 for creative freedom. I want crow kirigami.

Origami is once again allowed as an operative noun. It should have been this way in the first place, I'm not sure why it was overcomplicated with a set of special-snowflake nouns.
You could make crow origami. But instead of 'an origami crow', it would have to be 'a crow origami'. Silly, but the system is what it is.

What Eritheyl said. The noun has to be origami. Stag origami. Opossum origami. Whatever. Don't pick "dragon" and then not use dragon. Choose "origami" as item and then pick "kirigami" as type.
Item: Origami Type: Wetfoldorigami Org:
Appearance: An exquisitely-handcrafted shimmering swan origami

There is no plain 'origami' design. The most generic one that exists is 'package'. The fact that you even need to get silly and skate around it that way, I feel, is the problem.
Naia2012-03-06 06:18:14
Mmn, I got that approved a month or so ago though.
Unknown2012-03-06 06:32:11
Yeees... it's possible to just have origami, but the point is that there is no plain origami pattern, you still have to pick one of the preset categories (which is going to be package if you want any sort of freedom as to what you're designing), and it is just unnecessarily complicated/confusing for designers. If origami of whatever you want is allowed, then there's no reason to have all the separate patterns.
Enyalida2012-03-06 06:42:58
Agreed!
Arsalil2012-03-06 16:23:36
What about the release messages? Aren't those pre-programmed in? So you can choose package origami, and design whatever you want, but the release message is still going to be generic. It would be nice if you could change that as well, just like you can change the taste of a food item.
Zilias2012-03-06 16:24:08
Will this bypass the preprogrammed release message? I know when I tried to design some in the passed the problem I cam across is that Kirigami has only the specific animals in the list and they all have unique release messages.
i.e. Creating Stag from a Dragon would still release as a Dragon.
Does using a different type of origami and then making it kirigami through design illiminate this issue?

Lulz, we posted that at the same time
Riluna2012-03-06 18:32:22
Nope.
Looks to me like it's only the "appearance" description that even makes it to the release.
get kirigami from satchel
You take a folded Flame of Glinshari from a tawdry satchel.
release kirigami
You release a folded Flame of Glinshari and it flutters into the air and around you, its kirigami charm dissolving into the air around you as the vellum disappears in tiny motes of dust.

Enyalida2012-03-06 18:44:41
No, I think he means that creating it as a Stag with the dragon pattern still allows it to be released with RELEASE DRAGON, though that makes little sense. Because I know that to be true.
Zilias2012-03-06 19:24:46
I remember creating my own designs in the past, using Dragon as a base design. When i created it and made it into another animal that was not one of the base designs I was told it had to be only one of those animals. I was also told that no other animals were going to be created, thus making Stag not possible using a Kirigami design because the release messages will never match.
My actual question is, if I use wetfold designs which have different messages when released, would I be able to change it from Wetfold to Kirigami so that I can bypass the small amount of animals available to get new Kirigami designs and still have the effect of Kirigami instead of Wetfold?
