There is a topic relating to this topic in Achaea's forums, and I thought it could do with some discussion.
Do you really think it's possible to play Lusternia, or any of the IRE Muds, on a casual basis without using the games solely as chatrooms?
The following has always been my experience when playing any of IRE Muds, and coming back from a time of dormancy:
1) Decide to finally log on again, hoping to find some nice RP, bashing, etc.
2) Find that all my supplies have decayed.
3) Sigh and try to convince myself to bash up the gold required to buy all new supplies. If successful, proceed to number 4 on the list. Though, this one is pretty hard to become motivated to do.
4) Find bits and pieces of RP (scarce because I'm busy bashing up gold!)
5) Finally get all my supplies rebought.
6) Stick around for a day or two after, and then go dormant again.
7) Rinse and repeat after a few months.
Admittedly, Lusternia still holds some "new" to me, so it isn't as bad here as in Achaea. After so many years there, I can't bring myself to even log in anymore, not to mention having to face restocking all my char's supplies!
Does this ring a bell with anyone else? Is there a problem with IRE Muds and holding onto casual players? Is there anything that we could do to make returning from a period of dormancy easier on casual players?

I think the liquid rift made it a lot more bearable for me when I was still logging in on and off -- buying a few new vials and linking them isn't nearly as bad as having to buy the elixirs all over again. Decay is also imperative, otherwise the database gets huuuuge and everyone suffers lag.
It definitely is a problem in Achaea when all of your vials and salves decay, and if you don't have any gold or credits on you, bashing for gold can be... well, difficult, and there aren't nearly as many nice gold quests that don't require bashing. So basically I think Lusternia > Achaea on almost all of your points.

What are you needing to replace to go bashing besides possibly vials which isn't an issue anymore? The only decaying item I have that I really wouldn't want to go bashing without is my GreatRobes, and even then sometimes I will accidently go without them and not notice it. I guess I have an advantage in a beast with bodyguard and heal+ that will never die though...
Do you also got warrior/monk weapons to replace? Or only bash really high end stuff?

Cabinets are amazing for playing intermittently. Especially with a stasis gem.

If you do the website commenting thing for a month, you'll also have enough for a vial rune and be set up with a vial linked to health/mana/bromides, plus mending and one other of your choice, which covers most low-midbie bashing areas.

There's not an article every day though? /confused
I currently play casually, although my definition of casual is log in a few times a week to check up on Ministry stuff. Some may think that is playing more than casual already, heh. I find audit to be very helpful, quickly check what will decay soon and upkeep that. I always make sure I keep some savings on hand, and if they are running low, I plan a bit of bashing. That keeps me going through slow periods so I can jump right back in when I have more time / will to play.

It doesn't have to be a new article. You can keep commenting on the same article each day and it still counts.

It would depend on the guild you choose. Monks would probably be the easiest to get away with this.
Monks rely on tattoos for armor. It's fairly expensive to get a full set, but they're non-decay so you won't have to worry about armor ever again once you've got them. The unarmed forms that all monks get aren't bad for bashing either, so if you stay away long enough for your weapon/s to decay, you're not at too much of a disadvantage. If you can afford the credits you can make them permanant and remove this disadvantage entirely.
The only things you'd have to worry about decaying would be vials (fairly cheap), pipes/tinderboxes (very cheap if you can make them yourself), healing scrolls (not so cheap) and your clothes (if you want weather protection/don't want to RP a naked monk). As Raeri pointed out artivials are fairly cheap, so if you don't want to keep forking out for new vials every 3 months or so this is probably a cheaper option (especially if you to the commenting thing).
Personally, I've got artivials and pipes, and I'm a tailor, so I make my own clothes. I think I probably got enough free comms over December to keep me fully clothed till next December without having to buy any extra comms.
