Sooo. On a couple of occasions, I've attempted to get a D&D campaign started online, over MSN. The first time...it didn't work. The second time, when people actually managed to turn up, it worked very, very well. And, y'know, since I don't know many of you OOC, I thought it'd be nice if someone of us could get together and play D&D online at some point (my reasoning being it'll be better to play since we'll have no idea how the other party members act...it'd make for an interesting experience compared to games between groups of closer friends.) If anyone wants to play, just add my MSN at benjasinski@hotmail.com - I can DM or play, I prefer to play though in case there's any DMs around here. I don't much mind what rules we play by either (I just let everyone use whatever sourcebooks and run on trust), I have my own house rules but it matters little if we stick to them. Hope we can get enough people around to play. See y'all soon, I hope!

I would be highly interested...nobody here in Poughkeepsie plays any sort of table-top roleplaying. Hopefully I'll remember this thread!
Unknown2004-11-09 17:23:07
i would too, but id rather not be DM
Shiri2004-11-09 17:35:10
I'd rather not DM too, but I can if no one else wants to. I still have a campaign setting, and I thought it was pretty good. Lusternia stole too much of it though. InuYasha did too. (I swear, I hadn't even HEARD of InuYasha when I made it 0_o). And Hiriako, no worries, I'm gonna keep bumping this thread till we get 5 people. Muaha. Four players, and one reserve so we have a party of 4 players most of the time. Any less than that's a bit meh.

I'd be interested, only I don't have MSN. And I don't feel like signing up to it.

How does one play D&D over MSN?
I used to play the tabletop version with my grandparents, my grandma was a great DM, she did all her own adventures and stuff. However, we were kinda new to it, so I'm not the most experienced player, and it's been a long, long time since I've played.
I'd be interested though, if you don't mind me relearning as we go.

Your GRANDMA was a DM?
You have a great family!
Seriously, though, come up with some other game than D&D and I'm in. I grew bored of D&D at the age of 16 or so. Avant-garde roleplaying all the way!

Well, D&D's my favourite, I have a lot of sourcebooks for it, and besides, its all I know how to play. And to answer your question, it works over MSN via EITHER trusting the players not to fudge rolls, or having the DM do the rolls (I prefer this method, because it also adds some tension to, say, spot checks, not knowing what you got). It actually works quite well, because additionally you can have seperate MSN windows open with each person in case someone has to go ahead invisible to scout, or what have you, you can relay the information to them and them alone. One minor problem is that it can be quite hard to keep track of everything, not being able to have like 6 sheets in front of you at once, but we manage. Each character has a character sheet, and the DM has one of each character (again, for secret rolls such as spot. Like search in Lusternia, if you haven't played with the current ruleset.) It can be quite hard to get used to, but it does work. *hum*

You could download AIM and do this. The AIM chat bot has a diceroller program =D
Daganev2004-11-09 22:52:01
Why play d&d when you have lusternia?
Shiri2004-11-09 22:52:35
The one time I tried, it didn't work. So I just use a dice roller I downloaded somewhere. I can email it to whoever needs it too, it's not exactly huge So no, MSN it is, and I'm not budging

I just suddenly had this vision of some kid yelling from the fridge "Are there girls there? I get drunk!"
*cough*
Oh yes, my grandma was a great DM! She'd get this look on her face when she was being some evil kobold, and do the voice, and it was really great fun.

*laugh* That's another thing we get around. No one yelling "WHERE ARE THE CHEETOHS?" from the kitchen. *hum* That was a class movie though. I saw the 8 bit version.
Shamarah2004-11-10 00:43:48
I'll play, but I don't have MSN... I might be able to get it though.
Unknown2004-11-10 03:54:40
Oooh this sounds very interesting. I would love to..except...ya'know...I've never played D&D before. So I'm kinda out .
Asarnil2004-11-10 13:32:51
I am up for it. As long as I don't have to DM. When I am a DM, things get nasty (I once DM'd a novice bunch of players through the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil campaign - every session they would have to virtually roll up new chars )
I have virtually all the sourcebooks for DnD 3.0/3.5 and the stuff I dont have I can get in short order. If we are planning on playing online - there is a nifty little program called PcProfiler which keeps a fluid character sheet for easy tracking of stats and stuff.

Hmm, looks like I'll be DMing then, unless anyone wants to volunteer. And Quidgyboo, not my place alone to make this decision, but since the way I usually play the DM takes care of most of the rolls, you actually need to know how to roleplay more than how to play the game. You can learn that as you go along, or get helped out. If you want, I could give you the basics ahead of time, or if whoever else plays agrees, you could play without knowing how at all, and rely on RP common sense. When I played last, 4 of the 6 players'd never played before (they were all Achaean but one though).
EDIT, and man am I stupid for not mentioning this earlier. During British holidays, I can be here literally any time of day (and I mean any time), and during British schooldays I can be here from about 5PM-2AM, somewhere within those hours. But Saturdays are best.
Auseklis2004-11-10 16:47:40
Not exactly on topic, but I'd love to see some people try to convert Lusternia to D+D...
Shiri2004-11-10 18:09:17
You know, I built my campaign before Lusternia was made. And it is VERY VERY similar. I'm not even kidding. Different history by a long way, but...too many same ideas. InuYasha like stole half my stuff too. I had a Shikon No Tama thing long before I ever saw it! *paranoid* So, I mean, we could do that, or we could -actually- play in a Lusternia based thing. Not my ideal, but hey, not entirely my choice either. *hum*
Gaetele2004-11-11 00:49:34
I'd probably be interested if I had all the crap I needed to play D&D. I could probably borrow some of the stuff from friends if I wanted to, but I doubt they'd give it to me. And I don't have the money to pay for that stuff.
Oh well. I'm out.
