Learning Different Languages

Instead of someone spending 100 lessons to learn a language and just suddenly comprehending it, I have seen in other muds where the more you hear a language the more your understanding of it increases. Like for instance at the lower levels of learning a language someone would see

Conbert says, "G quke vae hycy"

Maybe at the middle levels someone would see

Conbert says, "I lgve yoe Juvy"

They could also speak it too the same thing the more they practice and listen to it the better they will become at speaking it.

So maybe propose choosing things like languages from the skillchoice list but instead of increasing them with lessons increase them with practice?

I like the idea, but rather than bother measuring "practice", why not just have the 100 lessons on a scale? That way with 90 lessons you can understand most, but not all of a language, but even with 15 you can understand a miniscule amount.

That's a good idea.

Bland as using lessons is, if it's a system where the more you practise it the more you learn people will just go into a quiet little room and set a macro to say 'the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog' eight hundred times.

Easy solution to that:

Limit the ability to learn languages. For instance, only a little per RL hour. That would mean that no matter how much you heard the language used, you'd only learn a bit of it.

Annoying if you've been told that you learn from hearing and then you go on the equivilent of a European vacation and immerse yourself in the language for a year (IC) or so, but then find out you were limited to x amount every day so it's going to take another 3 years...

Another idea. If you heard the same thing over and over, it wouldn't increase your knowledge of the language much. Nobody's going to bother with a macro that says eight hundred -different- things, right?

And then there's always the combination of those two ideas, a bit like the Tekura skill in the other games - learning a certain number of lessons increases your receptivity to the language, but then you have to practice hearing and speaking it to actually get it down. Just a thought!

We have discussed something vaguely similar to this, but obviously other things are still more important and probably will be for a while yet.
