Earlier, I heard that Rilandria died to Rexali. When she came back, she said that she had just logged on. Now, that is seriously unfair, to log on without any real defenses, then be attacked immediately.
My idea is for a temporary logon grace, during which you can't attack anyone, and they can't attack you. Make it a forced temporary period (i.e. it wears off after one or two minutes) or something like regular grace, but please, nobody wants to die as soon as they log on, with no chance to live, for whatever reason.

I can say that happened to me in Southguard also .. they were not in the middle of a fight either either leaving or entering the place but anyways .. not the most pleasant welcome . So yes for the grace idea!

I think the villages are kind of acknowledged danger zones...logging in and out in a village sounds like a pretty bad idea. Why not go somewhere secure, where chances are none of your enemies can get effectively?
Also, chances are in both cases no one KNEW you had just logged in, right? They could have mistaken you for raiders. Someone else might have been doing something wrong, and you logged into a war zone. I'm not saying you don't have a point, but especially in a village, I'd say you should be a bit more careful.
I think if people log in and out responsibly, this isn't an issue.
And what happens when someone wants to stay in a room and be a jerk? They log out right before losing grace, and log back in. Boom, you have a permanent jerk you can't move standing at your nexus.
Enemies in enemy territory, surrounded and needing to escape...log out, log in, walk out graced?
The thing you can't account for with ideas like this is whats called the 'idiot factor.' It may sound like a good idea, but if you give it to several hundred or a thousand idiots, someone is bound to find a way to abuse it.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you're responsible with your logging in and out, it ain't broke.

Simple enough. Make it a 30 second grace period, and you only gain it once per real life day. So if you log on, you have it, but if you log off, and log back on immediately, you won't have it, till you log on the next day.
Though, this doesn't mean I like the idea, that's just a possible solution. I'm against being graced when you enter the realms, and like Olan said, if you are responsible as to where you log off, it isn't a problem. Just teleport nexus right before you leave, not to difficult.

Aware that villages are not a safe place and usually don't log off at such and that was the first time i had done so having to leave in a rush, it does show when someone just logs in .. not hard to miss , i also agree with you that this could be abusive . For teleport nexus it takes what 18 seconds to work .. it take maybe 3 or 4 at the most to die .. but mostly right on your ideas Olan ..

OK, right, if he was in the room, he sees you log in. I didn't get that from your post, but fair point. If he was shrouded and looking for raiders and came in just after you logged in...well, different story. Anyway, didn't mean to be critical, I figured it was an emergency type thing.

I thought Achaea had something like that, where you had a form of grace when you logged on, until you typed something in.
Trae2004-11-14 07:49:28
This would be very easy to abuse. People would use it to scout areas, logging in and out. The proposal of once a day only gives you a chance of it not happening, so isn't really a solution.
Part of the danger of a game is that sort of risk, none of us like it when it happens, but overall it seems to make the game a bit more real.

Well, if it was until you do anything - anything that might interrupt a gateweaving or what have you, like looking, moving, speaking, talking on a channel, ANYTHING...that should remove it. But it's just so if you happen to get ambushed you'll be safe and you can just either go again or wait till they've gone if you don't fancy dying. Or run for it.
On the same note - don't you guys think things like setting aliases, reading help files, etc. should be able to be done while sleeping? OOC things like that. I dunno.

Daganev2004-11-14 12:03:37
you can't set an alias while sleeping? thats just silly.
Gwynn2004-11-14 12:34:21
You can use help files whilst sleeping, as well as orghelp files (like CHELP).
Consequently, this is a bad idea. It is easily abused, and adds no real value to the game.
If you're unlucky enough (or have vigilant, and quick moving enough enemies) that you get attacked as you login -before- you can put up your critical defences, then you ought not be protected anyway. That just rewards people being stupid, and punishes people who are well organised, mobile, and diligent.

I realize that logging out in a bad spot isn't a great idea, but people can disconnected.
The problem with this is that, for pretty much everyone, setting up critical defenses takes some form of equilibrium or balance. So, even if you can set up your defenses, you'll just die (unless you're lucky, tanky, or really fast) anyway, as you won't have a chance to run or fight back immediately.
Also, you don't have to be especially organized, mobile, or diligent to kill someone as he or she logs in.
