Paladin name change

I would love to see the Paladins get a different name. I don't think it will happen ever, mind you. It would be a giant pain to go through and change every reference to the Paladins to a different name in the history and such, I'm sure. But right now, all the other guilds have a unique sounding name and seem like something new. The Paladins have a name that sounds like something from other games, and we have the fewest members of any guild.

People come into Lusternia generally looking for something new. The Paladins bring to mind 'Churchies' and a certain specific kind of guild, people will think they've seen it all before. It doesn't seem interesting at face value.

I'd like to see something different. Maybe the 'Starguard' or something, going on the general theme of warrior guilds to use 'guard' in them. Could be something else too, but something that doesn't seem so "that's been done".

Like I say, I'm pretty sure it won't happen, and I understand why. I think we got a raw deal there, though.

Paladins symbolize those who took the warrior path and fight for the forces of light. Though I agree that seeing paladins do remind me of that. Mmm how about the ArchKnights! whee!!!

If celest was the empire, and Paladins the bodyguards of the emprorer I think it makes sense to call them something like starguard or Celenguard. Something to do when some coder is realy really really bored.

I know what Paladins -are-, but there could easily have been a more Lusternia-specific name. We're different than other Paladins in other games. Similar, but not the same. And heck, even if we were exactly the same, we'd get more members if we had a name that -sounded- new. I just wish we weren't the only guild that is so easily written off as the same old thing just by glancing at the name, there are Paladins eeeverywhere else.

I'm just saying, it seems to me that we are not going to be very popular compared to all these new exciting sounding guilds. Not that I want people to join just because we have a good name, but I do want people to join at all, and I think everyone can agree that there are apporixmately zero Paladins.

I agree with you about the paladin part, I guess its because with the new name warror archtypes Serenguard and Deathguard that few will actually join paladins. Here is two names that would be closest in my opinion to make a good name. CeleGuard and there is lightguard. Shiro is a guardian so don't mind him!
Ihsahn2004-11-18 04:01:27
RoyalGuard? That's the only thing I came up with that wasn't too cliche.
Daganev2004-11-18 04:28:42
your right, I read help paladins and compared it to help ur'guard and serenguard..

Methrenton, and Shakiniel are who they follow or are based on like Ur'guard come from the god Urlach. so my suggetions , both serious and not are ...

Meth'guard -- for the speedy aslarans
Shak'guard --- everyone loves high charisma
Meshguard -- After all they are oh so holy
SuperGuard -- no good pun thats not insulting here.
CelenGuard -- who doesn't want to buy forgings?

I personally like the name Paladin. It was one of the first Guilds I considered joining too just because thats what it was called.
Unknown2004-11-18 05:07:56
I know it's been seen here and there, but Templars. That'd make me squeal.
Rhysus2004-11-18 05:37:44
They really do need a new name. I'm sure that there were plenty of people from other IRE games that saw Paladin and thought well, why go Paladin when there are all these guilds with new names that I've never seen before! And even people who've never played IRE, Paladin would probably be the most cliche name (well, except perhaps the mages) in the entire game.

Hey, lowest three guilds in the game in terms of Topguilds? Paladins, Aquamancers, and Geomancers! I think that speaks volumes.

(Ok, Hartstone may have dropped below Geomancers. So sue me. My point stands.)
Jerah2004-11-18 07:24:03
The mages are a bit cliche too, yeah. But at least they haven't been in any other IRE games. And it's a -bit- more rare to have the specific element in a game, usually it's just 'Mages'. So at least you've got that. Paladins are aaaalways Paladins. It's not a -bad- name. I have no issue against the word itself. It's just utterly, totally un-unique compared to every other guild. Although as mentioned, it suffers a bit less in comparison to the mage types.

I like something with 'Star' in it. Celest is not a name that was made to be shortend. 'Cele' sounds pretty weird with most things, and kind of steps on the Celestines toes. Starknights, Starguard, something like that. Star is pretty much the symbol of Celest, and the Paladins are big on the Pool of Stars itself, drinking from it to get our powers historically and such.

As Rafael already bounces a lot...squealing would make him even cuter. biggrin.gif

Starknight is my position in the Guild at the moment, Jerah. But, Starguard would work.. maybe.. but not like Templars. Templars would rock. By the way, I know the Shallam equivalent in Aetolia changed their name with tons of history reading Shallam, probably Patron got it down for them. Talk to Lady Isune. smile.gif

Oh.. and I do sequal, a bit.. Ask Dumi. Hee biggrin.gif

Honestly, Starguard sounds a little too dull cause of Serenguard and Ur'guard.

Starknights sounds better, even though it's a current guild rank.

I believe during initial design I suggested a different name. The argument favouring "Paladins" is the same reason we had good vs. evil cities and dwarves and elves (as opposed to making up new names like tsol'aa or opening the more complex allignment cities like Hallifax and Gaudiguch). Though most of the game strives for originality, if it goes 100% new then it will alienate people who are used to certain formats, much like happened when Matt tried to not truly have good vs. evil in Achaea and it degenerated into that anyway. So it threw some unoriginal stuff in to keep them comfortable. Hence "Paladins" as a name.

But to show how things are original, some people have noticed one of the races seems a lot like a sasquatch. That is not coincidence. And we also have other mythical creatures as races that have completely new names to "Lusternify" them. Also, originally they were called the Druids and the Wiccans rather than the Hartstone and the Moondancers. So they were "Lusternified" as well.

Lightguard? Lightknights! biggrin.gif I do quite like (I just accidentally typed "light" again *peer fingers*) Starguard though... I understand why they were made Paladins now, but it doesn't look like it's working too well...

I knew it! It took me a few days to figure out that that was what they were... I mean, the description was pretty vague, and I was a bit delirious, but I knew that Igasho were ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN! Bahahaha!

Anyway, on the subject of Paladins changing their names, it wouldn't even have to be changed in the histories. Just have a little note like "... and in the year 102, the Paladin guild changed their name to the Auroran Knights, to better reflect the ideals they did uphold."
Unknown2004-11-18 14:50:07
I still wonder to this day why there are no Templar Knights or whatever the Order Van Helsing was a member of running around.
Unknown2004-11-18 15:08:09
The Knights Templar were exterminated in the middle ages by the French king Philip IV who didnt like that they were richer than him, and when the Templar made their first mistake, he accused them of heresy, and had them all burnt.

I like the templar suggestion. I'm havign a difficulty finding a guild to be in. i love using pets and mobiles in a fight, so im in the moondancers. But if there is a dark moondancer (nature+unholyness) I'd join in a heartbeat if they had evil little monsters and beasties to employ. For now, i'm a wiccan.
