The Knights Templar were exterminated in the middle ages by the French king Philip IV who didnt like that they were richer than him, and when the Templar made their first mistake, he accused them of heresy, and had them all burnt.
Except the Masonic ones that escaped and took the order underground. They then went on to form the Bavarian Illuminati to over throw the German monarchy. After that got exterminated they went underground again and successfully incited the French and Russian revolutions and influenced early American history, and in modern times created the UN in order to bring about the New World Order. All this was made possible by the fact they invented modern banking in the infrastructure they created on the roads to the Holy Land, and to this day they still control the transnational foundations of the banking system through folks like the Rockefellers and the Rothchilds thereby controlling all the world's wealth and, vicariously, the world's power. Or so say the conspiracy nuts. (No, I'm not one of those types. I just happen to know a few.)
Can't wait for the "National Treasure" movie to come out! I believe it gives reference to the Templar conspiracy theory. And to fan the flames, regardless of whether or not the Templars were involved in international conspiracies of world domination, some archeologists did find a church building that was run by Templars with a scene carved in its stone walls depicting a Masonic ritual with a templar paricipating...

Yey I love conspiracy theories *grin*

I agree that elfen and dwarves aren't too bad ideas - but see, the thing is that races are less cohesive as groups of people than classes are. So it matters little if less people pick dwarves because they're called something completely different to the fantasy norm, because races tend to be picked to fit with classes anyway. Whereas, if people don't choose Paladins because they have a name everyone knows and everything else looks so new and sparkly, it matters a lot to the poor Paladin guild. Starguard sounds like a much better name to me.
Eldril2004-11-18 17:54:44
I agree that we could use a different name. I can't imagine anyone entering the game, and upon not seeing Paladins on the list of guilds, freaking out at the completely alien world. Starguard might get people curious, and get us a few new members. Plus, it would be immensely helpful in fending off the currently inevitable...
"You must read through the code of the Paladins, young Page"
"Nah, I'm good, I was a Paladin in Achaea. Can you promote me off novicehood so I can learn DSL?"

There is something about the word "Starguard" that bothers me. Probably the double "-ar" sound, makes it sound like something out of Sailor Moon. I was personally amicable to the terms "Dawnwarden" or "Starward" which are relatively similar, but without the problem of my little pet peeve there.
Unknown2004-11-18 18:05:16
I'm confused by the whole line between light, stars, moon, and night. Light = Celest's whole ideology thing. Stars = Pool of Stars, and numerous references in Celestian ranks/titles (Star Council is the ruling council of the city, etc). Moon = Mother Moon, forestal spirit worshipped by the Moondancer wicca, and Night = Mother Night, tainted forestal spirit.
So 'stars' is Celestian, but 'moon' is forestal/Seren. And Celest also stands for the Light. Swoon.
My suggestion for a name is the Auroran Knights, in case anyone missed it earlier. The other two warrior guilds already have 'guard' in their titles - Serenguard, ur'Guard - so I don't think whatever the Paladins become needs it too (unless it happens to sound really cool somehow ).

I had a wardancer in Imperian so I understood the double arm balance. But I remeber on the opening day peoiple asking about DSL.
More to the point, Paladins is a familiar name, so that was the first guild that I joined. However it was all to similar for me (being a Paladin in Achaea and Aetolia and I Wardancer in Imperian) so I decided to make an alt in Magnagora. So its a good name in some aspects.
But then again weren't the Paladins called the Templars when they had Bladefire back in the opening of Achaea, so I guess that could be slightly familiar as well as drawing people in through curiosity.

Pff, with a British accent Dawnwarden has the exact same problem! I've never seen Sailor Moon, only the bizarre cosplayers - on second thoughts, those are bad enough. Maybe Dawnguard or, yeah, Starward. Guard seems to fit the knighty theme more though, that's all.
Baen2004-11-18 18:27:48
Actually, one of names I hate is Star Council because it sounds too close to Star Chamber. While Zealotry in Celest may result in a star chamber, it isn't something I would start out calling it.
Unknown2004-11-18 19:12:16
I do agree that the Paladins do need a name change, but the name in question, well, hard to think eh?
Id say...er....Shining Templars? bleh, im outta suggestions, so sue me.

The very original Paladins in Achaea were called Templars as well.
Thorgal2004-11-18 19:43:33
-drool templars-
Unknown2004-11-18 20:02:06
Yeah! But they got nerfed to Paladins. I want some freaking Rosicrucians or something of that sort dang it. *sneeefle*
Unknown2004-11-18 20:09:35
I'll go out on a limb here and suggest "Crusaders".
Jerah2004-11-19 02:04:23
Templars would be kind of neat. Not as Celest themed as I'd like, though. I still like The use of 'Star', it's a symbol of Celest, we're Knights of Celest. I'd rather work with what we have than just make up a whole new name, not that some of the suggestions aren't good.
Hence, I suggested Starknights -because- it was a rank. So clearly it is something that relates to the Paladins. We're talking to Isune about changing some of those guild ranks names for unrelated reasons, including Starknight, so it wouldn't be an overlap, anyway.
I wholeheartedly disagree with the reasoning Roark posted that some guilds are purposely kept unoriginal just to satisfy people who are expecting cliches. Those people can go to hell, why should everyone who wants to be a Lusternia unique soldier of the Light type be harnessed with a stupid cliche just because a few people have no imagination? That just makes me angry, it's like our name is some kind of sacrifice to the ignorant masses.

Oh, and I asked Isune about the name change a while back, she said it wasn't likely. This is entirely hypothetical. And a little bit hoping someone important takes it into consideration.
Unknown2004-11-23 22:36:03
The paladins have a name problem?
"The Celestines of Celest stand guard over Celestia." It makes my tongue crap just reading it.

Jerah2004-11-24 08:37:26
*grin* Fair point. It bugs me that there's a guild names the Celestines so we can't just call people from Celest Celestines. It ends up being Celestians or something. But still, Celestines catches the eye, it's new, when you're joining the game you're probably not thinking "Hmm, that name might conflict in certain sentences with the name of my city."
I'm not that concerned about it, though, anymore. I still think it would be nice, but we're getting more members lately anyway. Perhaps because warrior types are now considerably better, who knows. In any case, the original problem isn't so bad now.

someone suggest Royal Guard I think that makes most sense for history and names... there is a reason why all the warriors are called guards. they are historically linked.
Incase people are not aware... Celest... Celestial.. Stars.. heavens, angels, light, hope.. etc...
Some reason, moon never fit in with the whole celestial bodies thing, it was always seperate because of the way it changes.
