I liked the feature in imperian that when you heard a different language that you didn't understand, you heard different sounds.

Like for examples the elves had quick flowing tongues and the lycaeans spoke in a serious of grounds.

I also liked when it told you what language you were speaking when you sent a tell.

You tell Val in elfen, "Haha you can't understand me! You gem nazi!."

Val tells you, "What?"

speak common

You tell val, "What were those gem prices again?"

-snicker- Yeah. They're both good ideas.

Don't know about the first one, though it would be interested, but I hate speaking to someone in another language and not knowing about it, then they ignore me or something (for a good reason). Not that that happens much. wacko.gif

I didn't know Imperion did that, but it has been my plan since early in the development to do that. Just never got priority.

City languages - I miss those.
Shiri2004-11-30 21:49:18
What I think would improve languages is if they worked over guild and commune channels. That's where most of the communication takes place, after all. (although, they'd probably get banned soon, unless, say, in Magnagora, they allowed anyone to speak in Viscanti, or Elfen in Serenwilde - not likely, though, as people would jump to cry racism).

I never really understood city languages. Cities don't have their own languages, it's countries. And since the IRE Games are all set in one continent basically, (Sapience, or Basin of Life, I dunno what it is in Imperian), it seems strange there would be languages for cities.
Shiri2004-11-30 22:39:30
Yeah, actually Iggy it wasn't technically a city - it was more of a dialect. That's why the brooches of translation didn't work on them. (which sort of made them useless)

I wish there was some kind of trader-talk that sounds almost like gibberish. It's from Star Wars, somewhere in one of the books, really obscure.

I mean, if we can code drunk speak, can we mess with some normal speak, and have certain people be able to understand?

Well... maybe it would be harder...

"Drunk speak code, mess normal speak mean I, understand some people." In really fast gnome-like (dragonlance-style) speak.

Something like that...

Someday, I await the day when a person who will properly RP someone exactly like a Dragonlance gnome, speech included, arrives in an IRE MUD.

That day has yet to arrive. But I shall not cease my stoic vigil. cool.gif

I'm tempted to make an alt.

Then... I can tell them my whole name...

*giggle*
Shiri2004-12-01 00:35:05
I'd be eternally grateful. laugh.gif Go onnnn! Then everyone will see how truly annoying they are *inno*

What I'd really like to see implemented is the ability to choose the languages you wanted to speak upon character creation. Of course, some limits would have to be put in place, but it would add a whole new dimension to roleplay.
Unknown2004-12-01 01:11:56
That is, until some fool who chose a different language emotes their messages (or uses some other loop) to bypass the language barrier.
Shiri2005-01-01 18:42:16
While we're at it, having things like tae'dae and Furrikin be similar languages, and Merian and Mugwumpi be similar, or things to that effect, would be very interesting. By similar I mean drunk-garbled, so that you could vaguely understand what someone was saying in a related language, but not to any advanced degree of accuracy.

I love the language system in Imperian. For example, the demonic tongue, called hanyou, when people hear it that do not speak it see this, "Olivet says something in a sharp and icy tongue" or something along those lines. The akrabi race sounds like a series of clicks to those that do not speak akrabi. I think it would be a great role play too to implement here.
Shiri2005-02-12 21:08:48
They called the demonic language hanyou? Argh. And people say I'm too Japanese-influenced. Now no one can complain about sand. tongue.gif (Also, Etain, stop necroing. whistling.gif)

The thought is appetising... but which race is the most gnome-like..?
Shiri2005-02-12 23:34:08
I could see a gnome-like Furrikin. Or for some reason a mugwump, but I don't know why I think that.
