awww, and here I thought reading the title it was going to be about the wonderfull OOC clans that keep misstelling.
Niara2004-12-01 09:38:48
In earlier times I played in muds where there were no clans but still we were able to build up spy networks...is the clanboard that important? Or the clanchannel? If you want to spy on people or undermine them try it as Estarra wrote...it can work too...and it will be even easier for the leader of the secret organization to make sure that not everyone knows who else is in the organization.
Daganev2004-12-01 09:44:27
You see what I hate about these ooc clans. Is that they arn't ooc. And if you ever talk about the clan as some entitiy.. they say Its just an OOC clan what are you talking about?
It completely ruins the game. Not to mention all the misstells that remind me that half the population is using Lusternia as a Chat room instead of some roleplaying game.
Playing the game is one thing. Constantly being OOC and saying.. "oh someone wrote a journal of this conversation, I just happen to have it right here." That does not make it IC, that makes you a person who doesn't know OOC from IC
Edit: For clarification. Its IC to remember a conversation and to say what you remember. Its ooc to go look up your log of the event and then repeat it word for word. Unless you have it well develepoed into your charachter that you have a perfect memory, when in reality you don't. But most charachters are not imbued with that photographic memmory.
Its IC to have a secret clan of alegances for some world conspiracy. Its OOC to have a clan with people of many different allegiances and then act surprised when people think theres some sort of conspiracy going on, or enemy you for consorting with the enemy.
If you find all the people who you meet in the game interesting on ooc level even though they are your enemy. AIM exists. and AIM even allows chat rooms.
Use them. Or if you using credits to buy clans, don't go around saying OOC this, OOC that and ruining the environment for everyone else.

Yeah I really have no complaint against statues and things. I was trying to roleplay that demon hunter role within an Order and it totally backfired on me. But thats how the cookie crumbles.
I agree there are a lot of ways around this. You can still be devoted to a particular God without being in an Order. Perhaps if you implemented a congregational system where you would have a basic standard to communicate without the organizational ties that go with it. Thus makes it more private and less public to statues.

Estarra, it's not about not making anyone angry. It's the fact that even private/secret clans have a name, that can be traced to the owner of the clan.
'HONORS VISAERIS'
"He is the clan head of the clan called 'The Disciples of Crow.'"
Private clan, but all I have to do is see that, ding, I have a winner.
My idea for Hallifax's spy network is -contingent- on having a -secret- (not just private) clan to quickly trade information. This is difficult when you can 'HONORS REXALI', 'TUNE STATUE AGAINST'. I just think that the comraderie of private clans, etc, is being killed, and sooner or later, what's going to be the point of secrecy RP? It just ends up being alts doing spy work for less than reputable people.

I started out feeling that being able to tune a statue against a clan was a bad idea. But really, it's no different to being able to tune against a city, and there are alternatives. Fun ones.
If you want to have a secret clan... well, surely it can't be as easy as just obtaining 500k gold. Don't -call- your clan the 'Brotherhood of Damnation'. Call it the 'Culinary Union of Seafood Connoisseurs', and have it as a front. Hell, if you wanted to be really tricky, you could spend an extra million gold on a cartel to back up the concept. Don't attract attention to yourself. If you want to contact people who can't actually be members for security purposes, use letters or tells! Have people char the letters to get rid of 'em. Organize secret meetings on other planes, or something - it'll be fun.
Or you could take the diplomatic method and try to convince them that what you're doing isn't wrong at all. It worked for the Occultist guild in Achaea for about two centuries (How disappointed was everyone else when Mithraea declared Chaos 'free from the taint'? Way to get rid of conflict with a bogus claim, geez...) Of course that might not be so easy with a leader like Nikua in power, in Serenwilde. But, whatever.
The DoC clan's mistake was that it started out as a public organization doing something that could never remain that way. Yes, it sucks than you can just have a totem or statue tuned against you, but a lot of things suck.
In Lusternia, as in all IRE games, roleplaying is to do with your imagination, but a part of it is also being clever and working within the system. That can be rewarding, and sometimes even fun! What's the point of RPing a secret society if there's absolutely and 100% no chance that you'll ever be found out? The cloak and dagger deal is half the fun, to me.

Don't worry, I've already designed my idea, although it will be tough.
Richter2004-12-01 18:37:09
I walk into serenwilde, get slammed by a totem for beind in DoC, I walk into celest, get slammed by statues.
Once again I ask, when people can enemy entire cities and clans, is walking around the world safe? If all the cities or players enemy someone's clans/order/guild/city, how are people going to move?
Watch out, I'm putting a statue up in a random spot that hits serenwilders, celestians, and magnagorans.

Here's another idea for clans who want deep agent members. You have a top tier of 'public' people who can bring members into or remove members from the clan. Your second tier of people are 'deep agents' who when they are in a safe area (safe as in not near totems), those in the top tier can bring them in and discuss things on the clan channel or post/read the newsgroup. After this, they can leave the clan and go about their merry way without fearing totems. Sure, the drawback is that those members won't instantly be able to be called to on the clan channel and there's more work for those in the top tier to keep track of members, but after all it is logical that sleeper cells and deep agents are harder to maintain communications with.
Just an idea for what it's worth.

Ive been thinking about this too...
How about having no clan? Have a bunch of people use tells. One person does somthing along the lines of
TELL ABC =CLAN= BLAH
That person could trigger it when ever anyone tells you somthing starting with =CLAN= to send it to the next perons. With a few triggers for everyone (eventually a bunch, if the group becomes bigger) could be informed reletively quickly.
Or else, you could make a function (this would need zmud) to have it whenever you type CLANTELL (or clt if your clever) it sends the tell out to everyone in the clan... with a GAG it wouldnt cause too much spam.
Well thats my brilliant Idea, if anyone understands it.

The problem with all those ideas, is that you need compitant players.

Well, of course, the clan is planned to be called SMART PEOPLE OF LUSTERNIA.
Member count - about 20. 6 are alts of other members.
