Smelt in forging only gives back metal comms used in a smithed item.
Melt in jewlery gives back metal and gems.
High level forging uses a -ton- of gems, ie: master weapons.
Based on these facts, maybe smelting should act like melting in regards to gems so smiths don't go utterly broke.
Now, I hear a lot of complaint about masterweapons. True, they -can- have higher stats, but the risk is -way- too high to spend the massive gold and go on the giant commodity and gems hunts it takes to make them, since they have the potential to be worse than your average weapons as well.
If we got gems back for smelting, like with melting, it might be worth it to make a masterweapon. We could smelt and reforge until it didn't suck. We'd have to replace leather and cloth and whatnot, sure, but that's more doable than replacing 50 gems every time. We'd still have to buy it all in the first place, so it wouldn't exactly be getting off easy.
I think it would solve a lot of problems, right now masterweapons are really underused, because honestly, most of us can't afford to keep trying for a good one at something like a million gems a pop.
Also, what temperature does a forge have to be to melt -diamonds-?

Here here. (Hear hear?)
Stetson2004-12-06 07:01:01
With stats coming out like 258 speed on a rapier, you think it would be fair to be able to just melt them down and try over and over?
Daganev2004-12-06 07:12:41
The rapiers that have 258 speed, have them because the masterweapons that make them are made entirely out of gold silver and platinum There isn't even any STEEL in it! Because of that they can be reforged over and over again.
I wish the trademasters would think about that more when they submit their plans. Because clearly, our weapons can be made out of -ANYTHING- including corpses and wooden fullplate.
I was curious myself why gems arn't smeltable.

heh, the idea of corpses for weapons is quite cool I think. A bone hilt, or the skull of a small creature on it somewhere.
Unknown2004-12-06 08:21:12
Well...how are the gems a part of the weapon? In jewelry, the gems are in one piece. If gems in weapons are all crushed up and such, you're not gonna get em back.
Jerah2004-12-06 08:33:48
That's quite easily and evidently proven wrong. I had someone melt a ring today that was covered in crushed diamond. The diamond was recovered.
Forged items can have fully intact gems at least as often as jewelry, in any case. Just like jewelry, there is no way to predict it. It is all a matter of how it is designed by the player.

as an example of how the gems are used in forging the skull mace has emeralds in its eyes, so therefore it takes emeralds to make. But when you come to smelt it down, the fact that to melt an emerald so that it couldnt be recovered requires temperatures that would just cause your steel to evaporate seems to have been missed.

It's quite silly that I cannot get them back.

It's practical. Everyone would have stupidly high-statted weapons if you lost nothing in the smelting.
Unknown2004-12-08 00:54:38
How about a fraction of the gems, then? Half or three-quarters?
Jerah2004-12-08 01:11:05
You'd still lose cloth and leather in the smelting. Not much, but those are two of the harder to get comms. If we'd end up with stupidly high statted weapons under those circumstances, we're ending up with stupidly -low- statted ones now. Masterweapons really, really suck a good portion of the time, and it costs a fortune to make them.
I just want to get some use out of the damn things.

As it is, the weapons are closely related to combat... whereas jewlerry isn't really. So it stands to reason that it's more bother getting a good weapon, because it has more impact on things...
Jerah2004-12-08 04:28:34
Fair point.
Still a pain in the ass, though.

I don't know about that. I rarely go bashing without my Mercy enchantment on, nor do I -ever- PK without as many enchanted spells stuck onto me as I can manage. Plus jewellery is used for influence and so forth.
Stetson2004-12-09 10:07:37
I think the point being made was that jewelery does not have a -variable- effect on combat if it is melted, and remade till the cows come home.
