I didn't understand the hype about Fullmetal Panic. At least I understood what people liked about FLCL even if it just annoyed me myself.

Of the autumn release lineup I've been watching Genshiken 2, Ghost Hound (looks interesting), Clannad (kinda funny, protagonist reminds me of Kyon wub.gif), Moyashimon (freakin' weird, no idea how this is going to develop) and the rest of Baccano! which is pretty good. And I finished Lucky Star, which was really cute and whimsical, even if a bit fanservicey sometimes. If someone had summarised it before I went to check it out "four girls do nothing for 24 episodes" I wouldn't have watched it, but...

Fullmetal Panic Fumoffu is cute and funny. A friend compared the two nicely: If Fullmetal Panic was from Sousuke's point-of-view, Fumoffu came from Kaname's. You don't need any knowledge of Fullmetal Panic to watch Fumoffu.
^^;; I only watched one episode of Fullmetal Panic. I'll have to try and get back to it.

The things I've recently watched:
  • Black Lagoon. Revy is the best anti-heroine ever.
  • Fate Stay Night. Kind of interesting. I never figured out who Servant Archer was supposed to be, but his English sounds heinously sinister. Servant Assassin was a pretty cool historical figure as well.
  • Basilisk. Ninjas. Woo.
  • Ergo Proxy. A little trippy and hard to follow at times, but very cool. I only wish Vincent had busted out his Proxy form a little more often.
  • Darker than Black. The main story arc in this one was a little hard to follow, because a lot of it is only addressed in conversations that occur during the episodic missions. Hei is one cold bastard, though.
  • Fullmetal Panic was... bleh. Half-assed mecha, overly goofy protagonist. Made of lame.
EDIT: Servant Archer!

Wait, Servant Archer was "supposed to be" someone? All I got out of the half of that series I watched was "Queen Arthur" (!?). Levy really is an awesome anti-hero though. Even Rock is a pretty decent anti-hero (I'd define him like that, anyway, it's hard to say.)

All of the Servants are reincarnated heroes. Lancer, for example, is the Irish hero Cu Chulainn, while Assassin is Sasake Kojiro, and Berserker is Hercules (no link needed there, I assume.)

My favorite Animes:

Ruroni Kenshin
Escaflowne
Outlaw Star

I saw a few Fumoffu episodes, and they ranged from amusing to hilarious. Of course, the "Sousuke has no social skills and tries to solve every problem with guns/explosives" shtick can get old if you recycle it over and over, so I understand why it may tire people after a while.

Furi Kuri is exactly what I like - bizarre and surreal at the outside, but with a well-developed and genuinely moving plot in the inside. I put it as my #3 favourite Anime for the time being.

Besides, I really like when the creators know exactly how many episodes their creation will have, and put as many in as it is necessary instead of pumping them out for as long as they can keep it going, like the popular Shonen fighting series tend to do. As a side note - if neverending fighting series (like Bleach, Naruto or DBZ as an older offender) are about, well, fighting, then how come I have yet to see one which has genuinely entertaining fights? While they are a good device to advance the plot or show off a character's new cool moves/techniques, they are rarely cool on their own, lacking dynamism. That creates an amusing situation where the best battle scenes actually occur in series that have little to do with fighting, like Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya or the aforementioned FLCL.

I am not an anime man, in fact I often mocked my friends for watching it. I own the box set for the older Hellsing though and f*cking love it, I also like Fullmetal Alchemists.. and my friend keeps getting me to watch Inuyasha&Fully Cool I think it is? Weird :censor:, but not too shabby
Unknown2007-11-07 03:00:50
Same. I myself am not an Anime man but I do have a few special shows locked away in my heart. Kharv, you'd love Golden Boy. Besides that, I like the classics, like Bebop & Eva. Inuyasha and Big O are pretty fun too.

I keep reading the thread title as "Favourite animal," but that ain't right. I'll chip in anyway though.

My friends and I watched all of Fruits Basket over the course of about 15 hours, (with breaks for lunch and dinner), and it was a pretty poor decision to watch it like that because it was actually quite good. I enjoyed it at least. It's a bit girly, and the ending wasn't satisfactory, (am I right in thinking there's way more manga that they haven't made into a show yet?), but overall it was a good laugh.

Samurai Champloo was good, (I've seen about 60% of it), and I really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop. With the same group of friends, we watched all of Neon Genesis Evangelion over a day, which was a seriously bad idea. I had no clue what was going on, though I gather that's natural when you get towards the end of the series.

I'm not really an anime nerd, but my friend Sarah was into it in a big way for a few years, so I've seen the odd episode of a lot of series.

Correct. They do this for a LOT of shows and it drives me insane. Fullmetal Alchemist and Gantz are two major victims of this (not that I really liked Gantz anyway, but Daevos kept insisting I watch it). Both of them had really terrible endings compared to the quality of the rest of the series. Fruits Basket ran from 1999-2006, but the anime only lasted through 2001.

Wait, another victim: xxxholic. I liked that show a lot! As far as it went. AND THE ENDING SUCKED TOO. What a boring last episode. angry.gif Xiran keeps trying to make me read the manga, but it's such a flawed medium I can't enjoy it at all. It's like the worst parts of books and anime. No sense of action like in the anime, and no ability to use well-written prose like in real books. So frustrating.

My favorite anime:

Vampire Hunter D (Both of them!)
Bleach

Blood+
Trinity Blood
Ghost in the Shell
Kurau
School Days
Elfen Lied
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni kai
Utawarerumono
Monster Princess
Kaibutsu Oujo
Ouran High School Host Club
Overdrive
Rumbling Hearts
....

>_< I have so many more but those are just off the top of my head

Hmm... I'm not as "well-read" so to speak as some of you. In fact, I've never heard of most of what people have listed, and most of my viewing comes from Cartoon Network.

But! In no particular order:

Paranoia Agent: I first saw it when I was recovering from surgery, late at night. It got my attention because of the insane opening theme, but I really like it!

Kino's Journey: It's like a collection of short stories with some very different themes, and sometimes some deep commentary.

Outlaw Star: Because Aisha is cool! Also she's my forum avatar, so I'd feel silly not listing it.

Naruto: Well, not really, but sort of. Shikamaru and Temari are cool. But I hate the whiney helpless damsel in distress archtype that gets played out in anime so often, and Naruto has too much of that.

Edit: I forgot Trigun!
Morgfyre2007-11-08 05:08:27
I just finished watching Serial Experiments Lain, which was fun. It reminded me a bit of David Lynch's work and Pi.

I also recommend the live-action anime Casshern to anyone who's interested in that style.

Aww. I remember when they took that off Toonami (Or do they still have it? I haven't even seen Toonami in like 5 years). Aisha was my favorite character! sad.gif

Hrm, isn't Avatar: The Last Airbender considered anime too even though it's made by Americans?

I liked FMA's ending. It was inferior to the rest of the series, but it wasn't bad. The manga is better, but I'll wait for it to finish before reading all the chapters that I am missing.

I heard what more or less is Gantz about, and it sounds like UFO: Enemy Unknown (which is great) meets Battle Royale (which I didn't see but I'm aware of the premise) meets Elfen Lied (which I didn't like). I have no idea about the quality though. Is it good? Bad?

It is an anime in my book, but opinions differ here.

Death Note started out strong but got very dull... I was a little disappointed, as the first few episodes were very, very cool.

I Finished up Kaze no Stigma and Tenjou Tenge recently. Kaze no Stigma was pretty cool, while Tenjou Tenge just seemed like an excuse to draw girls with big boobs and fight sequences.

The new ones I've picked up are Black Cat and xxxHolic . The former seems a little like Darker than Black, while the latter borders between artsy and trippy, with a little of the usual anime shenanigans thrown in.

EDIT: And D. Gray Man, I forgot about that. Victorian Europe done in anime. Kind of interesting just to see some of the character designs and artwork.
