Absolutely. MSN/AIM me if you want and I'll show you. ninja.gif

EDIT @ Ashteru: Are we talking about the OVA here? I haven't seen that yet, only a couple episodes of the/one of the old series (which I couldn't manage to get through, too cheesy.)

You shall be contacted.

And OMG, I can't believe there's a new Hellsing. I've always wanted to watch the first series, but have been too cheap to buy it, and never saw it on TV.

Does Avatar count as an anime?

What about Teen Titans. I guess that's anime-like? I dunno..but I loved that show.

I just watched the Inuyasha Movies 1-4 this week at work. I also found some updates on the scanlations I've been reading. I forgot how much I loved that series.

I'm always the last to find out, but Deathnote is on Adult Swim. I love the opening and endings songs. For a while, the opening was my ringtone.

Umm this isn't really anime-related, but since most of you read manga anyway, does anyone know where I can read up some of Junji Ito's works, notably Tomie and Uzumaki? biggrin.gif
Shiri2008-01-03 02:46:32
Ask Arix about Uzumaki, he keeps trying to make me read/watch it.

Depends on how pedantic you are being. No, it isn't drawn in the anime art style. Yes, it is a worthwhile cartoon inspired by Japanese animated television. Depending on your definition of "anime," you can even consider the movie, "The Matrix" to be anime by the same token. It was also inspired by the anime animation and story style, and contained an excess of computer-generated animation.

I wouldn't call Avatar drawn in a non-anime style. I saw less anime-sque stuff that was considered Anime.

Of course, the strict definition is that every Japanese cartoon is Anime. Japanese themselves consider ALL cartoons Anime, to make it more fun/confusing.

Let's paraphrase the definition of sci-fi: Anime is what I point a finger at and call anime. Avatar is anime. And it's great.

Avatar IS great. Stupid writer's strike, coinciding exactly with Golden Week starting. Meh. Three weeks with nothing new to watch sad.gif 17 more days until the next episode of Clannad airs... Not that I'm counting =P

is that why it's stopped? I'm going to have to unleash Krellan on them soon.

Hmm, according to Wikipedia, Avatar wasn't effected, which is weird because it stopped right at the time the other shows stopped due to the strike. Heroes definitely was though, and BSG sad.gif

Newest Avatar episode coming at 11th. But I think everyone interested knows that already.

One proof on how good the show is: the Team Pet is prone to being the Scrappy, even on the best shows. Avatar has TWO team pets - and both are fun and not annoying at all.

I keep hearing people rave about Avatar so often... know where there's a place for us non-watchers to catch up on the episodes? smile.gif

I watch it from www.tvtorrents.com (along with Heroes and BSG), but that site is a bit hard to get started with. You can't download more than you upload, so you need to either pay them a euro via paypal to get started, or have someone give you an episode of something and seed it.

free, no sign up. Easy stuff and updates daily.

EDIT: I'm going to have to censor this because there's been trouble over posting similar sites directly before. Using PMs is fine though.

Eh, I wouldn't count Avatar as anime. Pretty much everything EXCEPT the animation is done in the states, and the key frames, pose guides, et cetera are also done in the states. Koreans are cheap labour, that's why they get a lot of animation work from the states/canada.

Avatar's first language is also english, and thus notably not japanese. tongue.gif

The style is definately influenced by japanese animation, as well as the way the cartoon progresses (most western animation is gag-based, this is gag and story based.) But you can tell in the body ratios (follows the 7 heads chart), length of limbs (shorter then japanese standards), and lipsynching (rolling tongue at l's, and so on, more complex then standard japanese animation lipsynching). Since it is written in america, you can note that the humour is also very americain (lots of gags.) Animation is more fluid (influenced by drawings per second...takes 9 months to draw an avatar episode ('nother reason they wouldn't be influenced by a writter strike) while something like the Simpsons takes 6 months.) then standard japanese animation (exception here being the Melancholy of Harui Saruya or whatever, which has wonderfly fluid, beautiful animation.), and LOTS of use of exagerration, stretch&squash, and the other of the 7 animation principles.

As for the glaring obvious signs...with the foreign writing...I'd like to think that it's easier to use something foreign and fantasy-like (unfamiliar to the regular westerner) that already exists then in creating something completely new >_>

I've only seen a couple animes (Naruto, Shippudden, Bleach, Inu Yasha, Melancholy), but I think my statements are relatively valid.
Unknown2008-03-04 23:48:15
I find plot and animation style more important than how long an episode is produced and where the studio it makes it based in. Therefore, Avatar == anime.

Fluid animation, lots of gags and exaggeration happen plenty of times in anime too. And it's Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - when the goddess takes the Earth over, mispronouncing her name will be very dangerous.

Now, more anime to add to my watched/am watching pile:

-Finished Fullmetal Panic. Fumoffu was funny and did NOT get tiring despite having the same basic premise in most episodes ("Sousuke has no idea how to act in civilian life"). Second Raid had improved graphics, really disturbing villains and a nice storyline while still not removing the comedy entirely. I wish they wrapped it up better - too little resolution, too much Sagara being an emo. I still liked it though.
-Excel Saga. HILARIOUS. I accuse everyone who dissed the anime in this thread before of lacking any sense of humour. And yes, Excel's voice is painful to hear in the dub, but not so much in the original version.
-Lucky Star. Funny, cute and VERY geeky. By now I am strongly leaning into thinking that Studio Kyoto simply cannot release anything bad/mediocre.
-TTGL. I watched 2 episodes so far, but they were cool. Great action and lots of manly emotions flowing around. The giant robot fights resemble FLCL for me (that's a compliment in case you wondered), but after all it's made by Gainax too.

I have to say this.

Shiri really rocks. He is teh bot. (Get it? Get it?) I was introduced to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann by my boyfriend, but without Shiri sending me the torrent file I wouldn't have been able to download and watch it all.

It was such a good series that it's going into my permanent archives.

Yesssss, people are getting into the awesomeness that is TTGL.
