I am noticing a common theme in that list somehow.
Unknown2009-07-02 13:20:36
I guess it's not really surprising, looking at Nakarel's profile.
Elfen Lied kinda stands out a little though.
Shiri2009-07-02 14:46:33
I was thinking the same thing. Would you expect to see Code Geass there nowadays too? They seem to be off-centre by about the same amount, albeit in different directions.
Unknown2009-07-02 15:52:54
Code Geass would easily fit in. More than Death Note actually, they're alike but DN has some seinen traits while CG - not so much.
Shiri2009-07-02 16:05:07
What, really? Did you watch season 2? It was way more seinen than DN, particularly with how unpredictable the plot was, leaving me guessing with random twists literally every episode. I didn't watch season 1 and had Sojiro explain it to me so if that's your experience I'll let you have it.
Unknown2009-07-02 17:06:12
I did, it was exhilarating. Supposedly full of plot holes and deux ex machina too, but I don't care. Weird of you not to watch the first one though, it was great as well.
Anyway, unpredictable plot and sudden twists are not really a typical seinen characteristics. CG is set in a fictional setting, is more focused on combat and relationships between characters seemed rather simple. In DN there was a constant psychological game between Light and L, Lelouch lacked such an opponent (spinzaku certainly didn't live up to this kind of role), maybe except for the last episodes.
DN had a darker atmosphere, more realistic and down to earth dilemmas, more realistic characters' behaviour. Both protagonists were antiheroes, but how they ended up is also somewhat indicative.

That's just my feelings though, I'm not too big on categorizing.

CG was so awesome with its melodrama though, it reminded me of an actual enjoyable version of terrible old plays that people think are good for some reason. It just doesn't seem like the kind of thing your average shounen audience could fully appreciate (not that there weren't other things for them to enjoy.)

Compare and contrast: I'll take a chip...AND EAT IT!!!!!!!!

Reworking of formula, but you can still see the recipe all over the place.

Also, not sure why I couldn't stand the first series, I tried it twice and it just rubbed me the wrong way for some reason. I'm glad I let Sojiro convince me to watch R2 though, totally worth it.

Maybe it's emphasised speech that reminded you of plays. Lelouch is such a poser.

Want drama, finish Clannad AS. wink.gif That series is such a freakin downer... yet not really. You were just 4 eps away...
Shiri2009-07-02 17:27:31
Wrong kind of drama!

And I'm sure it is Lelouch, particularly the actor who carries it off so well. I actually thought his voice was really silly at first but it works so well, especially with Wakamoto as a villain and a couple others in the mix (Diethard or whatever his name is comes to mind). The script is practically made for him.
Unknown2009-07-02 17:35:00
Did you see this? It's not the seiyu, but it's a fairly similar voice and it's quite hilarious.
Shiri2009-07-02 17:37:23
Yes, I did, and it made me cringe (I enjoyed lucky star but I'm not going near that OP in earshot of anyone I know). They do sound a lot alike though.

I actually came to like that song, after the initial shock when seeing all this moeness for the first time. wink.gif

Elfen Lied
and Utena are probably my favorites.
Don't really care for other much.
What I've seen of Death Note was okay..

Dropped off for a few days, but that's alright! Revive!

I've got to give credit for DBZ making anime seem interesting.

Little Nemo (this movie freaked me out as a kid)
Ninja Scroll (movie)
Gundam Wing (series and movie)
Ergo Proxy (Only up to ep. 11 or so, awesome so far)
Full Metal Alchemist (Series brilliant, movie...lacking)
Hellsing (Orig. and Ultimate)
Witch Hunter Robin
The Cat Returns
Princess Mononoke (Been told that I'd love Miyazaki films in general)
Samurai Champloo
Zoids
Outlaw Star (Starts out awesome, kinda pitters after they start racing)

Alas, there are always more that I cannot remember. I'm not forgetting Bebop, I just haven't had time to see it yet. I've yet to see Naruto, but I'm just not really looking forward to another fighting/tournament based series after the however many episodes are involved in DBZ.

I love Ayashi no Ceres and Fushigi Yuugi, those two made me love romance in anime plotlines...
Flame of Recca falls in the category of Ranma, for me, fun to watch but in passing... Vampire Knight, I have to get back onto that...

And WHY DO THEY KEEP UPDATING CLAYMORE SO SLOW! crying.gif I wanna know what happens NAO!!
