So, we don't have java at work, and I can't put my Zmud here. I tried telnet, which I have little idea how to use, and it didn't work. Any ideas?
Unknown2004-12-09 20:54:01
The port may be firewalled; have you been able to connect before on a different machine, or do you use the same box every day?
Richter2004-12-09 20:55:05
Same one every day. Haven't yet connected to Lusternia from here.

What OS does your machine use? Some of the iterations of Windows Et.Al. try to use some animal named HyperTerminal instead of telnet.exe; I know about the latter but just stare stupidly at the former if I'm doing anything other than the most basic stuff (entering directional commands, basically).
Richter2004-12-09 20:59:22
Windows 2000 professional. Darn training computers.

Mmmkay, I know Jack Squat about that one (I'm on 98 and will never ever upgrade), but I'll give what help I can.
Your basic telnet will live somewhere in your Accessories/Internet Tools region barring intense reorganization. Upon selecting it (or having your Run prompt start telnet.exe directly, your choice) you'll get the Big Black Window. Obviously, you want the Connect option; you should be fine with lusternia.com as the host name, though the direct IP is 208.185.247.29 if you need it (according to the login page, anyhoo). You'll need to manually change the port to 23 since the default "telnet" is useless for MUDs. Don't worry about the terminal type at the moment.
If all the following works but you still can't connect, looks like you've had a visit from Mr. Firewall. See if you can bribe your network admin with doughnuts or something, since otherwise you'll have to wait until you're back home to feed the craving.
Hope this doesn't come off as condescending, what with all the hand-holding stuff. Really old programs can be annoying to deal with and every detail helps.

get a fancy usb drive.. they are awesome and zmud can run off of it. If it doesn't try an older version of zmud.
Neale2004-12-09 21:27:14
Invest in a keychain drive and put ZMud or whatever on it. It's well worth it.
Daganev2004-12-09 21:29:23
usb drive, keychain drive... I use to call them pen drives till the store clerks had no idea what I was talking about...
This is what happens when nobody stardardizes thingimajigs.

Keychain drive is to USB drive as square is to rectangle... Actually mine isn't even on a keychain, I think I'm going to start calling it "lanyard drive".
Shiri2004-12-09 22:13:43
USB Keys can sometimes be unpredictable...mine just refuses to work altogether some days for no readily apparent reason. Besides Richter, you should be working, not playing! Come to think of it, though, I could do with this at school. No JAVA client, and I don't even know if you can DO Telnet for Lusternia. There's no connection thingy on the site, that I'm aware, unlike Achaea.

I have an ipod... I havemy zmud files on it. Will install to it, and drag drop settings. Not sure if I can hook it up at school. Tried, but couldn't get to it, so maybe I need to hook it up before I login. Hehe. Charging it off the schools comps might not go down well/might fry something of the schools, though.
Richter2004-12-09 22:29:36
No, its good info. I only use zmud, so I dont know this stuff. I'll try it tomorrow probably, at lunch.
Daganev2004-12-09 22:29:52
One thing that I'm sure nobody does because you "don't have to" is remember to uninstall your drive before you remove it. That solves a lot of the issues of it not working next time you use it. Also, I play Zmud straight off my drive when I'm not on my laptop (doesn't have usb 2.0 ports) and it works fine. I can play anywhere... its terrible for the adiction but wonderfull for the coolness factor.
and telnet works with lusternia. Played through tellnet for a week or so.

45 minute lunch break. It takes me under a minute to eat, and I'm antisocial here.

Shiri2004-12-10 00:49:02
Oww, Daganev, that must have hurt. *wince*
And yeah, I have free time on Tuesday lunchtime when my ICT teacher isn't conscripting me into failing to set up the whole friggin' 6th form network as a webserver...in Linux. (I've only ever used Windows, particularly '98
) And I don't actually eat lunch at all, so that's not a problem either

Take $450, go to Besy Buy, buy a Dell. Give them rebates and everything so you get $100 back, then put zMUD on there.
