Hey Estarra, why was I shrubbed?

Hello everyone, some of you know me from the game, some don't. I logged into my character this morning to find this

You have been turned into a shrubbery by the administration. It will last for a remaining forever.

Quite a shock, considering I don't know why it was done. I have an idea...but that's not really perma shrub material to me, since it wasn't homophobic, cursing, direct harassment (like bugging someone sexually and such), or any other really bad thing that people normally get shrubbed for on other IRE games.

This is really frustrating, a reply would be appreciated....and no, not from any people whose characters are Celestine and would like to gloat or make fun.
Estarra2004-12-11 19:12:02
It was for your ad which was deemed harassing and homophobic. It makes no difference whether it was directly attacking someone or not.
Unknown2004-12-11 21:46:37
Am I the only one thinking this is a bit extreme? Punishing someone who is a good roleplayer and overall nice guy for a first offense at trying to be funny doesn't make much sense to me. However, I have gotten quite use to seeing people in "evil" cities get shrubbed alot more than any other part of the game. I pray that is not what I'm seeing started here.
Shiri2004-12-11 21:50:43
I'm not saying this applies here, but that's because a lot of people who just play in order to be pains go to the "evil" cities so that they can go around killing whoever they like and call it RP. Not that this doesn't happen in "good" cities (albeit to a lesser extent) too, but that's the main reason. Which isn't related to Mordechai's shrubbing.

Guess which kind of city, people who whines everytime something wrong had happened to them, tends to go ? tongue.gif

awwww...

I, too, can pull prejudice ideas out of my ..

rrmeow.. where is my milk

Using gay people or homosexuality in general for the butt of a 'joke' certainly merits harsh punishment in my eyes. It's incredibly immature.
Unknown2004-12-11 22:19:56
I agree that he deserved a measure of punishment, but a permaban seems too harsh. I never saw the ad, however, so I don't know exactly what was going on.

People who take anything and everything as an insult to them personally need to wake up. If they are so afraid of having their feelings hurt, they should go in their house, lock the door, and live in their happy world. Do I get upset when I hear jokes about my heritage or the fact that I live in "the South"? No, why? Because it's a joke. I'm old enough to have learned not to let words effect me so. It's rather sad that people let other people's words get to them.
Gol2004-12-11 22:34:10
Anything insulting to homosexuals is awful, I agree... but A permashrub for the first offense, seems a little much. Now, if it was a public post, which most will read, or he shouted it, I could understand something like 24 hours of mute time... but for an ad, which most will not see, and will not be up long... a permashrubbing seems a little much...

People's feelings are going to be hurt, yes. That doesn't mean that when you have the oppurtunity to do something to stop it, you shouldn't take that oppurtunity. Just because someone is going to insult a person, doesn't mean you have to be that someone.

It's so easy to encapsulate a group of individuals in a word then to twist and defile the beauty of this word into something obscene. In term of energy spent, it's probably equivalent to a spoon of sugar but this word could hit the feeling of the targetted sentient being with the force of a train.
How does it feel for an human being to feel reduced to an object, to be reduced to an ugly mere word at the cost of a spoon of sugar, quasi effortlessly... hmmm...

What kind of barrier could you raise against it, is there a place which could be considered safe from a word that could hurt in a world which is built with words.

How does it feel to be a shrub, does it hurt as much as a spoon of sugar?

If someone is stupid enough to be confused by the Harassment and Racism/Homophobia rules, then they don't really deserve a second chance.
Unknown2004-12-11 22:40:06
If I felt like it, I could show logs of so much abuse of Helplanguage, half the game would be "punished" by your train of thought.

Yeah, people are stupid like that.

Though most of them keep it on whatever city's CT, or in whichever clan, at least.

My only point is that going to the extremes rarely solves anything. This is a waste of a good character. I know what it's like to be shrubbed. The sense of wasting not only a great deal of time and effort, but also the financial loss as well is quite undesirable. Regardless, I've been asking around and -no one- has even seen this ad. Did a multitude actually see it or is it just one extremely whiny person that brought this around?
Unknown2004-12-11 22:48:00
Seriously, it's not a big deal. It's not like it's a HARD to NOT be racist or homophobic. If you can't resist the temptation, maybe you shouldn't play a game with other online people.

I seen it, and most of us on Ct at the time of its debute on Maket seen it. You can't compare cursory to stabbing at someones sexual preference, and then casting it on a whole group on a public channel such as Market.

Racism is built into this game, with the Viscanti and Merian setup, you can't escape that for good RP reasons. I can't see it for homophobia, though.

Well gee, do you have to walk down a street and wonder if anyone is going to jump up behind you and beat you to death because you are holding hands with your partner? No, you don't. You think gay people are just going to laugh and ignore it when people make fun of them, but it doesn't work out that way. I personally am glad he was shrubbed, because if he wasn't there would be a bigot on the loose in the game, and I honestly do not like the idea of playing with someone like that.
Unknown2004-12-11 23:02:32
I didn't mean IC racism. I meant OOC racism. Maybe harassing someone through tells about them being a different colour IRL.

Right, it is. The difference is between IC racism, which is tolerated and even expected, and OOC racism, which has no place at all in the game and is easy to avoid.

On the topic of Mordechai, though, I'm not saying anything unless I can find out the content of the ad. Though.. I'm doubtful posting on the board is the best method to get a quick response from Estarra.
