Where does your character name come from?

Shoshana2004-12-19 04:01:36
I could've sworn we had a thread on this before, but I'm probably just confused huh.gif

Shoshana is Hebrew for "rose" and it's used as a girl's name. I noticed lots of Hebrew-influenced names in the histories (Although some might have been coincidence or something...) so I thought I'd continue the theme biggrin.gif.

My other character is Hebrew for "night", and also a character from Fullmetal Alchemist, although I chose it for the same reason they probably did, as opposed to me getting it from the character...

Actually, this is the first time I haven't made up my own names completely (Although apparently my character in Achaea has the name of some random Star Trek character laugh.gif)
Unknown2004-12-19 04:10:01
A character in Stephen King's The Dark Tower series is also named after the word 'Shoshana', although it is changed to 'Susannah'.
Qaletaqa2004-12-19 05:43:35
Qaletaqa is a Navajo name for "Guardian of the People." So I have tried to develop my character around that.

Hrm... Started with K, tacked on a couple sounds, varied the spelling a bit.  Voila, Kaelar.  Not taken from anything in particular.  smile.gif

That's how I design all of my names. Start with a letter or syllable, number of syllables I want, ding. Troll Maldaathi? Two harsh sounding syllables. Human Bard? Three lighter, 'lilting' syllables, etc.

The one difference, is since Rexali (pronounced 'Rex-al-i, though a Lucidian might pronounce it "Rex'li") comes from a prominent Lucidian family, tainted, I wanted to borrow from the Lucidian names in the histories:

Cr’rik, En’oonki, Ieck’co, Ke’kix, etc. The meaning of 'Rex' is entirely coincidental, but somewhat remarkable.

Now to think of (or steal from) the surnames of Adom, Lars, Shevat, Oolin...
Silvanus2004-12-19 06:18:14
Silvanus:

There is one reason I picked thi sname, but that reason got it from two possible reasons which I don't know.

How I got the name: I stole it from my brother.

How my brother ogt it: Well, either one of two things. There is a Roman Emperor, who was from the Gaul territory, he started a mini-revolution, got Emperor, and was assassinated 30 days later on a trip to a Church.

Or...

The Ancient Greek God of the Hunt is named Silvanus.

I did not get the name from Warcraft III. That is Sylvanus, and is a woman.
Shiri2004-12-19 10:13:41
Ah, Silvanus, I thought you stole it from the D&D god of the oak or whoever that was. I was surprised to see you in Magnagora wink.gif

And Guido, so you know, I always think of your character as that dude from the Monkey Island series whistling.gif
Richter2004-12-19 11:09:54
Just sounded cool.

Not sure where I got it. Richter is German, though I know I wasn't thinking Germanish, and Richter is also the name of a Belmont from Castlevania, not to mention the richter scale. Pretty sure I didn't take the name from any of those places, it was just random.

And Carthan... um... I think it was one of those days when I was thinking of a word. You know, how a word gets stuck in your head? Like today, I was thinking of facilitate. Don't ask. So, that day it was Carthage. Guess I pulled Carthan out of that somehow. Maybe.

Guido Threepwood.. laughing1.gif

Yeah, Jack's a fairly common name. I actually drew inspiration from numerous' Jacks (Jack of Blades, villian in the game 'Fable'; Jack Skellington, character from the movie 'The Nightmare before Christmas'; and my own grandfather), and have elements of each mixed into his personality.

I heard this name somewhere, couldn't remember where, but I thought it was a great name so I remembered it. After using it in a couple of different MUDs, I found out it was Buddha's first name (at least, Siddharta was, I couldn't even spell it right!). Now I feel like I don't deserve it sad.gif It'd almost be like naming your Lusternian character 'Servelan'.
Ingrid2004-12-19 18:15:07
Ingrid is the name of a girl I used to know offline, and Somares is the last name of a friend's online message board roleplaying char. I liked the way Ingrid sounded, and Somares seemed to be a fitting surname.

Sidharta and Shiri are very womanly names. Like Aris, Ariel, Dumihru (mannish name), Manjanaia. Like, a lot of Celestian names sound like the opposite, Magnagora has only two, Aesyra and Aeriya. (Aesyra is the man, Aeriya is the woman, I thought it was the other way around).

You are my hero.
I LOVE THAT MOVIE.

Silvanus, I don't think Sidharta as a feminine (Sp) name... sidharta starts with Sid, which is a guy... I think of Sidharta as like a title.

Aris isn't a girly name. And Sidharta sure as heck isn't (maybe that's just because I knew about the Buddha Sidartha from an early age so it got ingrained in me though.)

And Shiri STILL isn't girly, dangit. Just because it's ONE girl's name, it's still USUALLY a guy's name. *mutter*

Gaoth Alraune, Tenmou of the Seren

I took Gaoth from a book, Angus - O Primeiro Guerreiro, I am not sure if you can find the book in your country...Gaoth is the name of a sacred sword.

Alraune, I took from the Knights of Zodiac manga....

Tenmou = Brave

Unknown2004-12-19 18:54:46
I just took Elanora (the name of one of my Aetolian characters) and switched around a few letters. First I had Eralla or something of the sort, but later I switched it to Ellara. I think it sounds much better.
Kaileigh2004-12-19 19:14:08
It's Celtic for.. something.
Unknown2004-12-19 23:07:21

eirene2004-12-20 13:06:11
