French in Delport

Back to Common Grounds.

This has been annoying me ever since Qaletaqa started posting publically (No offense, Qaletaqa unsure.gif )...I mean, I understand he has an rp background for it, was from Delport, and...they speak French there. But it just doesn't seem right to put a real life language into Lusternia. Just as if someone started speaking Spanish in game. Can explain English as "Common", but how do you explain these? Would it be that hard to make up a language for the few things the Delportians say?

Any comments and such?

Damn, better get rid of english. You can explain french as Delportoise just as you can explain english as common.

Yeah, it's kinda annoying that Tuek and I had to translate for everyone on the commune channel. Not everyone speaks French, so...
Unknown2004-12-24 10:53:43
I slip in lots of welsh/celtic because one its my native language, and two it has the serenwilde feel to it. I mean we did invent the Fae tongue.gif
Elryn2004-12-24 10:58:41
What exactly does the latest public post say? Anyone able to translate for us linguistically stunted people?

English isn't always everyones first language either.
Shiri2004-12-24 11:01:21
I know, and I realise it's rather arrogant to just have everything in English "because," but it IS an English MUD...I know I'm on shaky ground, but it's just really irritating for those who don't speak French, whereas we can't really do anything about the English, because it's an English MUD and anyway, you gotta start somewhere.
Unknown2004-12-24 11:02:45
You should all learn welsh. Then no one can argue, you will be too busy mutating words.
Shiri2004-12-24 11:05:38
Argh, no. dry.gif Actually, I don't know why I mind French, but not Welsh. I suppose I'm just used to all the gaelic things in other fantasies. Suppose there shouldn't really be a distinction...
Shoshana2004-12-24 11:19:20
The reason there shouldn't be languages other than English used like they are in Delport, IMHO, is because it restricts the RP of people who want to be from Delport, but don't know French. I don't have nearly as much problem with people using gaelic or whatever as an old language for doing rituals in (Like Demeter people in Achaea) because then you can take the effort to learn the little bits you need, or recite them by rote. It's different when it's an entire village in the present that speaks a different language as their first one...
Elryn2004-12-24 11:22:05
Can we write news posts in Elfen, or Krokani? If not, can someone please translate Qaletaqa's post?
Shiri2004-12-24 11:23:27
He was basically saying how glad he is his lovely Delport pledged his allegiance to Celest and offering promises of protection. You could go into more detail than that, but I can't be bothered to translate word for word. *g*
Elryn2004-12-24 11:24:52
Ah, got it... thanks Shiri! worthy.gif
Shiri2004-12-24 11:28:29
Yeah...it's just not really fair that Tuek or I or anyone else had to translate that for other people. What might solve it at least partially is if racial communications could be written as well as spoken.

Maybe you should read Citera's first post again.

I'm definitely not a fan of introducing real languages into the game for the simple reason that since they are real, players who encounter them will have more than just an IC response to them. In the above case, if you have any kind of opinion about French or even France, you are forced to take the extra step to distance yourself from that opinion while you are playing.

That said, they are simply other languages, their presence by and large as justified as that of English. A very real benefit, though perhaps the only benefit, is that there is a relative wealth of information should anyone want to learn or reference them.

I think we all agree that the creation of fleshed out IC languages unique to the game is ideal. Sadly, it's also the least practical. I'll probably never see it anywhere, but I think a really immersive game that used its own unique language as a base (rather than English or any other) would be amazing. It would probably have one of the smallest playerbases, but I love the idea.

I'm guessing from the last few posts that Qally posted a whole news post or big chunky paragraph in Delportoise?

Hrm.. Well. I love the French language, speak a mediocre amount of it (going to do my Tertiary Entrance Exam with it as a subject next year). But, as harsh as it sounds.. this is an English game. If you can't speak English, then you can't play here without taking the trouble to learn it. In the same way, the game is -not- French, so people that do not speak French shouldn't made to be at a disadvantage RP-wise. I don't mind the odd phrase, like Qal's greetings and farewells, and signing a post in it is alright too, but when it becomes an integral part of understanding something, that's over the top.

I'd also question the RP of it somewhat- if you're posting to public, I should think you would want everyone to understand you. So.. sign off in Delportoise, or get a translator. smile.gif

He may have an RP reason for it, but you still have an RP reason to tell him to speak plain. The truth is that he doesn't 'not understand' common, he just puts stupid French phrases like 'mes amis' into sentences to try and sound clever. Just politely ask him not to.

Maybe you English-speaking people could learn a second language for a start? tongue.gif

A )That's just a LITTLE easier said than done.
B )What if people DO know a second language, but it's not French?
C )They shouldn't really have to for this, since this is an English game.
