Is everyone ok?

Actually I just care about the buildings....
Buildings don't die from hunger or aids.

and do they have interenet connections? are their networks working?
Richter2004-12-29 00:55:25
*eyebrow*
Daganev2004-12-29 00:56:26
wha? is it so wrong to really like the idea of a neutron bomb since it only kills all the people and leaves the buildings intact?
Stetson2004-12-29 02:55:15
I'm with you, Daganev. How are you meant to get good loot from killing everyone in the general area if you destroy all their property as well?
Iridiel2004-12-29 17:06:34
I had some friends who might be there, and I spent the afternoon trying to find out how were they. I am worried about the other victims, but as I don't know them I won't ask if they're ok in those forums. I'd try to get involved in something to send them food and med aid, as it the most I can do from my place.

Natural disasters are being more frequent those last years or is me who watch more the News? Two earthquakes, n tornados, floods... sad.gif

This morning the death toll was 85,000, with over 45,000 in Indonesia.

A further 100,000+ are predicted to die from the outbreaks of Typhoid and Cholera in the devestation over the next few months, and millions upon millions have been left without homes. Their economy will be very messed up, and more people will surely lose their jobs, as others have lost generations of their livelihoods.

There is no fresh water except what is being brought in as foreign aid, and food is almost non-existant.

Could you, in all honesty, say to one of these people's faces that their suffering "Doesn't Matter" because other people have suffered?

It makes the 9/11 look like crying over spilled milk (I don't think this, by the way, I'm using it as an example of the "That isn't bad because there are worse things" argument).

Its like saying to a burns victim, who lost the rest of their family in a fire and will likely never stop suffering again, "Oh, well, you can't complain, look at people who have fallen into Lava! You're practically in heaven compared to them, you horrible, horrible person for suffering over nothing!"

Consequently, Somalia also lost 100 lives, many millions of dollars of property damage, and are facing the same disease, water, and food problems as everyone else, and they're already plagued with Starvation and Aids. So you're saying that these people don't matter either in this suffering, only their other suffering?

Its attitudes like yours that lead to these problems in the first place. You embody Joseph Stalin's quote, "The death of one man is a tradgedy, the Death of millions, a statistic."
Stetson2004-12-30 09:40:29
Don't even get me started on Stalin. He raised literacy, brang electricity to every corner of Russia, and had no unemployment. Now take into consideration he managed to dictate a country, after killing off approximately 22 million of his own countrymen, that is certainly impressive.

Also, my point was more along the lines of, these people don't need your sympathy, they need your help. Though they are about as likely to get help as the 800,000,000 starving people in the world.
Unknown2004-12-30 10:20:14
Ashame that he didn't raise your literacy. That would be brought, dear.

Also dont assume that we all just give out sympathy. I am a very active volunteer at a crisis relief charity, they are hundreds of thousands of people in my country alone that give up their time, effort and money to help these people.

Just as their are people who give up their time to help the starving millions of the world, their are people that give their time to help rebuild schools and hospitals after earthquakes. We all can't do everything, but we can do our bit.

I'm 19 and have been volunteering with a service devoted to preventing youth suicide and helping young people get through tough times for almost two years now.

What do you do Stetson?

(LoL what's the bet you have been some saint volunteer for the last 20 years, live in a box and donate all your money to charities...that would be just my luck tongue.gif)
Daganev2004-12-30 16:58:01
As Brian said to his apostles..
"What have the romans ever done for us!?"
People of Judea's front man number 1: "Roads"
rebel number 2: "Aquaducts"
rebel number 3: "Clean sewers"
rebel number 4: "Security"
"Allright, besides Roads, Aquaducts, Clean sewers, Security (from behind the group: "Healthcare") and Healthcare,.. what have the romans ever done for Us!?"

*sings* Allways look on the bright side of life... *whistle*
Daganev2004-12-30 16:59:30
oh, and if you don't like someoen's ideas... attack the ideas not the person... sheesh.
Ialie2004-12-30 23:03:58
I'm a critcal care nurse. I help people everyday and that is just in my little city of South Bend.
Unknown2004-12-30 23:36:26
Bah, just read the newspaper and I'm personally disgusted with how America is helping (I'm American, don't attack me). More than 300 million dollors were spent on Bush's inagural(sp?) activities. The war in Iraq cost about 7.5 million dollar PER HOUR. How much are we sending to this devastated area? 14 million. That's it, next time someone uses an American stereotype on me, I'm just gonna smile and nod.
Daganev2004-12-30 23:43:50
You do know how aide works right?

First you say, no matter what we will give you this amount of money. the 14 million, which is 10 million more than they first pledged when it hit. Then once damage is assessed, the country that requires aide asks different goverments for certain amounts of money, and after that request goes through people decide what the appropiate amount is and then "pay the bill"

Newspapers are all hype and tend to leave out reality.

Concequently, you don't want people just throwing money away to help a cuase, because then you end up with Red Cross like scandals.
Figures are also generally deceiving, because its rarely actually money being spent, its often just money not made.

You mean like, this idea:
"But everyone just go back to caring about things when they effect -you-. Live your greedy self absorbed existances. No one really cares about Southeast Asias inhabitants, just their tourist friends who may have died."
Daganev2004-12-31 02:37:54
Yes, That was a generalized statement. Its says Everyone, and You which would be you plural, as in you guys. and then says No one. Objectivly that would include the person saying that statement, and the people who got hit by the titlewave.

If you take that personally, your just wierd. Or maybe it just rings true.

I would think a proper responce would be "Although some people might think that way, its a gross generalization and you should be ashamed of even thinking it might be true."

QUOTE(Stetson @ Dec 28 2004, 07:40 AM)
Wow, 15000. You people are getting worked up over nothing. Every day around 15000 die from AIDS and HIV related illnesses tuberculosis, and malaria.

24,000 people die each day of starvation (this is a low estimate). As many as 800,000,000 people in the world are chronically undernourished.

But everyone just go back to caring about things when they effect -you-. Live your greedy self absorbed existances. No one really cares about Southeast Asias inhabitants, just their tourist friends who may have died.

...ok I'm late in responding but...I have no friends that live there/visited and I still feel bad about what happened. Who are you to tell people that they need to go back to not caring? Not everyone has a black hole as a heart
Gwynn2004-12-31 05:49:11
Yes it is a sad fact that often the luxuries and infrastructure today is built or financed by horrible people and or activities, there are so many examples of this, in just about every nation in the world that i don't have to mention them.

I'm very happy with the international response so far, at last count, donations from private citizens towards the relief fund worldwide were close to 70 million dollars, and there are so many people over there helping.

For instance, at the time of the disaster, there were around 15000 Australians in the affected areas, of these, about 5000 are dead, but of the remaining 10000, less than 50 have returned home (despite the Australian government offering to military flight them out). The rest are staying, and helping with the effort. I can only assume that it is the same for everyone else there.

Natural disasters are terrible and unavoidable, but sometimes humanity suprises you with its altruistic response. I for one wish I could be over there helping, but thats well beyond my ability to do.

This morning the death toll was over 120,000.
Annelia2004-12-31 06:39:16
Gwynn, yer helped with the effort so they can sit on the beach again, but then once everything is cleaned up don't we all go back to what is 'normal'
Its sad so many people lost their life in that tsumni. I feel more sorry for the children though those just starting the wonders of their life..
Sorry if i come across cold but censor.gif happens, the world will go around those who knew the victems will grieve and continue on that day for many years. The rest of us will feel something for those involved give it a year and the majority will forget the day it happened..

And these natural disasters, they are natural but the frequency isn't and that is us to blame.. Maybe we'll improve the world but until that happens. I reckon the damage is already done..
AND for a side note there, 1 Submarine can blow up the world if they really wanted too.. 20 missiles each with 30 warheads the size of the Hiroshima bomb.. so yer let Nature get its own back for once...

I thought the aid levels, from individuals, governments and corporations, had reached around half a billion?
