Speech correction

Okay, so you know how on channels, every sentence starts with a capital, and ends with a full stop, by default? That's great. (Apart from Covens not having punctuation, but I bet that'll be ironed out.) But it would just be so good on my heart if Lusternia corrected speech so that all "i"s on their own would be turned into capitals. And possibly similar adjustments where it's possible to correct them (there's no way you can make people say "don't" instead of "dont" reliably, I'll wager.) It just annoys the heck out of me that people don't even try to type properly, it really does.

I'm bothered by that too, I can understand having a random word spelled incorrectly but i and dont and stuff like that just looks sloppy to me. Is it -that- hard to hit the shift key? Or to put a ' there? dry.gif
Shiri2005-01-01 18:58:49
Yeah, so rather than just complain about it again I decided to do some of the ol' constructive criticism for a change. So could that actually be done? And any other things that could be done? I can see it being very hard to code (apart from the "i" thing), is all.

Yukari, sometimes it is that hard biggrin.gif. I hate shift, cause either I don't use it enough, Or I use It for Almost Every Word.
Is there any way to make ZMUD switch ' i ' with ' I '?
Unknown2005-01-01 20:19:02
OOCly, that bugs me. I hate when someone corrects someone spelling or certain puncuation ICly, though. I mean when they're talking, not a post. Can you really tell, by listning to someone if they said "their" where they should have said "there"
Shiri2005-01-01 20:25:50
Which is why I don't correct them, as it seems rather pointless. But all the same, it would be nice to have people speaking properly, don't you think? It just makes it feel more like an RPG and less like a chatroom when people type properly. It's like if someone said, "where are u", but not quite as bad.
Unknown2005-01-01 23:41:31
Even if my character has no way of knowing through aetherwave communications and says, it does bug me slightly on an OOC level. Just a wee bit.
Yukari2005-01-01 23:45:07
I don't tend to correct people ICly either but it bugs me OOCly, and most of the time things that aren't spelled right don't bug me it's just the i's and dont's. And I personally don't think shifting is hard *poke Dyr* happy.gif

Well I Do.
It ends up taking me 5 minutes to talk on a channel cause I need to go back and fix the I's and such, and by that time what I wanted to say does not apply any more sad.gif.
Daganev2005-01-02 03:41:37
if you use zmud. use the #sub command. and regular expressions which were discussed in another thread.

conversly, if your one of those people who hate the shift key make an alias for i to I
Shiri2005-01-02 11:34:24
That doesn't actually work Daganev. When you do i it would turn it into I, but, uh, that's rather pointless, since it'd basically correct your inventory looking. dry.gif It doesn't actually correct it in midspeech. Besides, if people can't be bothered to type properly, I very much doubt they can be bothered to fix themselves up so that they're forced to type properly.
Drago2005-01-02 11:40:22
#TRIGGER { i } {#sub {~ I~ }}
#TRIGGER {dont} {#sub don't}
#TRIGGER {cant} {#sub can't}

Tada.
Shiri2005-01-02 12:25:27
Yeah, but A )JAVA/whatever else (and yes, some people HAVE to use it, not just obsessive like me) people can't do that, and B )People aren't likely to do that if they can't be bothered to type right, unless that command changes it so tha's what you see (in which case the first point still applies.)

Wouldn't that script turn every single 'i' into an 'I'? That would be quIte possIbly even more annoyIng than them not usIng capItal Is at all, you know...

My personal pet peeve is people saying "could care less" instead of "couldn't care less", but unfortunately I think that's only going to become more and more common crying.gif. Goodbye, logic! bye.gif
Shiri2005-01-02 15:56:27
Or ATM Machine. Yes, automatic teller machine machine. Quite. dry.gif

That's not really fixable, though, I think. *g*

Nope, it would turn every " i " into " I " ("i" -> "I").

But by now I'm getting the hang of typing correctly.
Maedhros2005-01-02 19:25:10
omg u r al nerdz, its a GMAE! they're is no reeson 2 typ lik ur tryin 2 win the nerdton r smthing.

But seriously, I type with near-perfect grammar (I just can't get used to putting periods on the ends of my sentences while chatting with someone, if I'm using one sentence lines), the thing that annoys me is sometimes when I try to use the apostrophe, I hit the enter key which happens to be RIGHT beside it.

Oh my god, that is SO annoying. Thankfully I hardly ever use that phrase, and I was sensible enough to correct all the people who say it wrong.

Every so often, when I try to type an apostrophe, I also hit "" and "\\" before I hit the apostrophe and enter key at once.
Shiri2005-01-02 22:22:43
That or RIGHT as I'm about to finish my sentence, I do a > or a / instead of a . or a ?. And then press enter because I type too fast to notice a mistake if it's the last character. Damn my quick reflexes. *cough*
