I honestly don't understand why they're allowing you to publish EVERY novice essay. I'm going to start publishing random scrolls on honey cakes and butterflies. What the hell, why not?
Unknown2005-10-05 14:54:06
That's just sucky.
Nokraenom2005-10-05 14:54:48
Libraries are FUBAR. From my end it looked like the first Critique (which I based all the subsequent critiques on) was successful, seeing as the book remained "an undistinguished, substandard publication" after the review period.

Talk about the biggest headache ever. I guess Magnagora took one for the rest of the Basin who actually believes in not publishing novice essays on this one. Hooray for having morals? *goes off to bash some grubs for essence*
Jack2005-10-05 14:55:10
See, Magnagora only publishes literature that isn't rushed off in five minutes by forced essay requirements and quasi-novices desperate for guildfavours.

Actually, it looks like the rest of the Basin got hit. Magnagora didn't. They're still at 150, Celest got 300 for all the positive ones that passed, and Serenwilde and Glomdoring are both at 75.
Eyod2005-10-05 15:01:38
well that annoys me, but I suppose that depends on what the critiques were on I guess.

Meh. I wish that could remain the case, but it has become abundantly clear from the continued responses by the Administration (e.g., "critique them if they're so bad!", "critique(s) denied!") that Libraries are nothing more than another system to meta-game for power, and it is irrelevant to publish anything of merit beyond the 2 entries each year for the prestige publications. The rest of the publications are for power and nothing else.

Look at it in the long run: even if -every- publication a library published were validly critiqued, after 25 years of sitting on the shelves it would start to earn positive power income for the city each and every following year, having already offset the power that was lost by the valid critique. So Librarians can consider whatever crap they can shovel out to be a long-term investment in the city, regardless of whether it is critiqued or not.

Needless to say, I'm just about ready to hand the ministry of the Librarian over to someone with a basic grasp of grammar who can proof-read entries, because it's clear that Libraries are useful for nothing else.

Am I disappointed in this whole system? Absolutely. It took one of what I considered to be the most promising things I'd heard of in Lusternia in a long time and turned it into a pile of worthless garbage. Time to bust out the essay requirements for Magnagoran novices.

You're looking at the size of the collections. Magnagora does have the second largest, hence the 150. You need to look at the LIBRARIES command to see Magnagora's lovely credibility currently (another reason to publish more innane drivel!). Seren and Glom both lead in the credibility department simply because they have critiqued nothing, while Celest has had 1 critique rejected (Rhysus' of my Elder Wars translation), and Mag had all of ours of Celest's novice essays rejected (20 critiques, putting us at -325 credibility for the year).
