Forget World of Darkness, burn TSR's D20, lock away Call of Cthulu in an extradimensional dungeon of the Chaos Gods, and Throw Middle-earth roleplaying in a river!
Have you ever sat around the table with all your other roleplaying friends, saving some other, low-quality fantasy world yet again, and thought "Geeze, I wish the Nihilists would show up with some Ur'guard and just kick Bobo the happy Elf's backside!"? Well, now they can!
I bring to you, Lusternia: The Tabletop RPG.
Basically, I'm in the early stages of porting the Lusternia you all know and love into a series of rules and guidelines to allow it to be played as a pen 'n' paper RPG. Naturally, I'm not stupid, so this is only a personal interest project which I'm going to circulate around here to interested parties when its done (unless of course IRE decides they want to move into publishing, heh).
Rules wise, it superficially resembles a bizzare intermingling of Warhammer fantasy roleplay and Shadowrun (And I just know those of you who know both those systems are going "Shoot the crazy man now!" but it does work, in a twisted kind of way, though it is original, its no copy).
I'm currently working on the rather bulky task of converting the skills of Lusternia into a format that suits the RPG, though its coming along rather nicely. When I get it a bit further down the track, I'll get people to help me with testing it.
Of course, being as I am a fan of roleplay-heavy RPG games, this one is designed with that in mind (i.e. you don't just get buff by slamming hordes of monsters). But, thankfully for me, the world setting is already made, so that doesn't need to be covered (though I will type summaries of it).

WFRP and SR are my favourite systems, so I am with you all the way.
Daganev2005-01-06 10:44:18
heh, My Father invented a table top system that can be used to create any skill and any world. Its actually pretty good, but now he's working on the books first ... oh well.
You could always yous GARPS or whatever though so its not so difficult.

GURPS is the incarnation of pure evil as an RPG system. It should never be used for anything.

Daganev, your spelling really IS "wobbly".
Anyhow Gwynn, I'm curious, so keep us all updated on your progress, I'd like to know more.

I knew there was a reason I liked you! Hehe.
Once I have a few full guild skill-lists worked out (I have Totems, High-magic and Tarot done so far...don't ask me why I did it in that order), I'll post the general idea up here to be picked apart.

Shadowrun?! Bang! There I shot you. The setting is alright but the rule system . . . Well at least it's not Torg. That game couldn't be played without each player using a scientific calculator.
Unknown2005-01-06 14:01:36
I find the SR rule system is always scariest just to look at, once you start playing it a lot (every week for 7 years) it flows, I mean SR1 was bad, SR2 an improvement but still a bit clunky SR3 I find just flows so well. But then its each to their own.
Unknown2005-01-06 14:14:24
I thought Sr1 was better then SR2 and I've never played SR3. Maybe that makes all the difference.
Gwynn2005-01-06 23:24:02
SR3 was SUCH an improvement on SR2, it made things so much simpler and smoother. I don't even play with the rulebook anymore, I remember everything I need to know (maybe I need to occasionally look up a statistic or two, but its not that hard anymore).
Anyhow, you'll probably be happy to note that the Shadowrun element of the rules is actually really quite simple (drawing on d6 rolls with a TN for a number of successes), so it won't require any scientific calculators. It may require a few tables (though certainly few enough to fit on a GM screen, which I will probably make a printable version of, though it'll be ugly because I'm no artist).
Probably won't be too much progress on it today, I have University all day, but tommorows another day eh?

Yes.. VERY wobbly... its why I love the quote so much.

I've never seriously played anything since AD&D 2nd edition. Dabbled in White Wolf.

I've played it.. 5 times that I can think of, and I think it overshadows every other system I've played under (except for MERP's combat, nothing beats shooting an arrow through someone's ear.)25826
Daganev2005-01-07 06:47:31
A good DM in AD&D would have you shooting through someones nostril. I've never played other systems though, so meh.
Unknown2005-01-07 10:14:10
Okay, I've never investigated much into the "tabletop" RPG world before, let alone play one. I did a search on google about some of the ones mentioned above and found it very interesting . I might investigate more...
Unknown2005-01-07 13:10:56
White Wolf has the better rules system in my opinion. I don't go much for the modern Cyber/Punk/Goth/Horor setting. They do have some medieval era settings that are pretty good and their Black Dog off shoot is well done but a little graphic.

Back home in San Diego, I had a small group of friends that played DnD 3rd ed. with me, and here I can walk down a hall screaming I am starting a new campaign and I will have to push people off me! Anywho, yarr lets see how this works out fatty mah son
Unknown2005-01-09 19:46:56
That's what Harker from Imp said about his days in the Navy. Magic was one of the pastimes of ship life
Eldanien2005-01-11 16:31:39
Count me among the interested. Maybe set up a PBEM for it?
Gwynn2005-01-12 02:13:42
Okay, I've realised all this bulk describing is weighing me down and sapping my motivation, especially when most of the stuff I'm saying is already known by you guys (but would obviously be included in a release of this designed for Non-Lusternian players, as they wouldn't know it) so I'm thinking of putting in a solid few hours of work today, posting some basic rules, and asking people to help fill in the rest along those guidelines. But we'll see. I'm very apprehensious about how my work will be recieved, naturally, so I might shy out
