Well an idea might be to replace Druidry with Ogham. There are twenty letters in the Ogham that correspond with twenty different trees.
The maiden, mother, and crone could be replaced with the Yellow Hag, Black Annis, and Blue Hag respectively.
Check this site: Christine's Monster/Faery Page

Hm. I'll take a look at that site in more depth sometime. (I think the Mother, Maiden, Crone parallel is important, though, so I don't want to change that.)
Also, replacing Druidry with Ogham really doesn't demonstrate the tainted nature of it.
I don't want to call it Taintforestry or Dark Druidry, because that's just too overt, I want a more subtle name that still reflects the corrupted nature of the woodlands.
Also, you guys, for future reference, if you want a skill put into these things, just PM me with it rather than posting it, and I'll see where it best fits and possibly adapt it and give you credit in the final version. If you're interested, upcoming skillsets include Anarchism (with chaos entities and so forth, haven't really thought too much about it), Continua (with golem construction via cosmic infusions), Dark Druidry, Crow, Night, Aeromancy, and Pyromancy.

Shiri, your awesome
Unknown2005-01-08 01:20:42
You didn't specify tainted and I'm trying not to encourage creating a tainted skills et.
Shiri2005-01-08 01:24:57
Well, just looking at how much more popular Glomdoring is than Gloriana from Richter's/Visaeris' (I forget which) poll, with which I have to admit I agree from an OOC perspective, tainted forest just seems like a much better skillchoice. On second thoughts, maybe once I get round to it I'll completely have gotten rid of the Druidry thing...hrm, I'll come to it last and see what ideas I have left in my skull by then.
Thanks Shiro.
Thanks Shiro.

I've developed an unreasonable hate for the concept of Taint. It's been horribly over played. Mithgar, Morrowind, Silvanesti in Dragonlance, and Memory Sorrow & Thorn to name a few.
Meh. Ignore me.

And in fact, these fae don't even NEED to be tainted. They could just be, you know, evil, nasty fae.

The fae are lesser nature spirits... neither good nor bad. If a forestal calls them to defend a forest, they will do it for a caring, compassionate, just bunch of people as quickly as they will do it for a cruel, malignant and evil bunch of people. As has been said elsewhere, our current fae -aren't- good. They -aren't- one extreme in a polarized situation.
Maybe three or four of those wonderful ideas could be the unique fae that Nightbringers can summon to replace our avatars, but I don't think a whole new set would make much sense.
And I agree with Cron... I would love to avoid too much emphasis on taint if its going to be a commune. Unless of course we expect Ackleberry to be the commune of Light, filled with angels and other heavenly creatures.

While I would agree with this in theory, I -really- can't see things like...brownies, nymphs, sprites, mothers that care only for your welfare...as anything but good. There's not a single remotely evil or even vaguely "neutral" (perhaps the Crone?) type fae in the Wicca skillset. Oh wait, Banshee. Okay, one, maybe two if you count the Crone. The rest are more or less of the...kindhearted, happy persuasion. So if the Ethereal's truly neutral, you may as well have a few more neutral/cruel fae there too.

Hopefully Ackleberry won't come at all, but that's just me. And we've been through this discussion before, and while your arguments may be valid, the general consensus is that Glomdoring would be preferred to Gloriana, so I'm sort of...going with the flow, there. I hope you understand my perspective.
Silvanus2005-01-08 02:02:21
You may have done the Tainted RP in some other place, but I sure the hell know that I haven't. The world does not revolve around you, it revolves around me (the last bit is sarcasm if you didn't notice).

Well, I don't equate 'good' with 'benefits me' or 'happy'... but by their appearance, sprite, brownie and mother are rather light-hearted, you are quite correct. They are balanced by crone, banshee and willowisp with quite different dispositions. Maybe when Wicca gets an update like Moon does, we'll find some more serious fae lurking around, as well. My point though was that they are just nature spirits... not good parts of nature and bad parts of nature (I've never thought of the natural world like that), they are just the personification of life. Oh, and you can be evil and happy, especially if your dastardly plans are working out.

I do understand, and I'm impressed by your ideas. I just wanted to say what I'm hoping and working for.
Shiri2005-01-08 02:23:31
Well, I'm glad my ideas impress you. (Credit to Ingrid and Zhaine for Selkies and Spriggans, remember.)
And yes, you can be evil and happy, but can you really call a sprite evil? And the crone is more...stern, the banshee all distraught over dying, and the willowisp...doesn't seem that bad, since it just makes people follow it, it's not like the electrical balls that feed on fear that we know and love from other modern-fantasy mythos.

No fae should be described as evil or good, at least not in a mythological sense. They just are. I still curse TSR for their lame lack luster twisting of elves. I curse TSR (and now WotC) in general.
Whilst the overwhelming majority may be dead set on Glomdoring. I am not and can't be, otherwise I would be abandoning my RP. Do we really need Ravenloft in Lusternia?
Anyway as to the skill set. Unseelie wouldn't be complete without Sluagh and Black Dogs. The Yellow Hag, Black Annis, and Blue Hag are the Maiden, Mother, and Crone. I can't come up with an English word for Dark Druidry either.
Still I do see your point and fine job. Perhaps I'll just have to put together my own variant. Elryn you interested?

I would have a very large problem with -any- fae aligning with Glomdoring.
History itself says Rowena attacked the Fae of the Ethereal, squeezing their life out for Kethuru. The fae cried out, 'D'or Glom!' which means, 'Have Mercy, Have Mercy!'
and Rowena replied 'Fai Glomdoring!' Which means, 'I have no mercy'
Glomdoring means 'Forest without Mercy'
I would find it impeccably bad taste to have any fae follow Rowena or Glomdoring, and they're resistant to the taint itself so they wouldn't be 'tainted fae'

They COULD be tainted fae. Resistance to something doesn't imply immunity. When they're taint resistant, that could just imply that they are warped by it as opposed to dying to it, which is arguably a lesser reaction. In fact, after seeing the little Fae girl thing, I'd have a hard time believing the fae were immune to Taint. Because that's what she was, Tainted.
And of course, if they're Tainted fae, they might well choose to ally themselves with the Tainted Glomdoring peoples. And if they didn't, they could be forced into slavery.

The fae, however, are resistant to the Almighty Presence, and we travel through the rent in the earth that once was the Great Ravenwood, and pass into the ethereal realm, claiming all that the Almighty touches.
