Nothing wrong with 80's pop
Although I had to escape it to go listen to more 80s stuff once it got onto something I didn't like so much

A few people have been PMing me asking me the same questions, so I am going to do a Quick FAQ for DJing.
1. Is it legal?
A. Yes, very much so. As the station is not commercial, as long as a few basic rules are applied to, it is totally legitimate.
2. What are these rules?
A.
i) The music played must be from a legal copy, i.e. if you have an MP3 you want to play you must own the CD or other media which is was copied from.
ii) In any given "show" (a 3 hour time period) you cannot play more than 3 songs from the same album, where an album refers to an original recording work, not a collection or boxset,
iii) In a show you cannot play more than 4 songs by the same artist and you may not play more than 2 consecutively.
iv) You cannot give out information that would amount to a playlist. So for example "We will be playing Madonna in a few minutes" is fine however "At 8 this evening we have Madonna, Like a Virgin" is not. Its kind of complex, if you want more clarification, ask me.
3. What do I need to DJ?
A. If you are using windows you will need a copy of Winamp (either version 2 or 5, 3 does not work) and the Shoutcasp DSP plugin. If you are a POSIX compliant OS user (Linux, MacOS, FreeBSD) you will need to download a transcoder program. All of these are available from http://www.shoutcast.com if you look under the Downloads, Be a DJ section. Oh and of course you will need music. Microphones are optional, but its much more interesting to have a DJ that the listener can hear.
4. So what else do I need to know?
A. If you are still interested, PM me and we can discuss when you can do it and I will give you the address, port and password you need to connect to the server to start streaming. I can also take you through how to setup the streamer to use your microphone if you want to use one.
5. How much bandwidth does it use?
A. Currently I have restricted the server to 24kbps 22,500Hz Mono connections (thats about the same as AM radio). So as long as you have an upstream connection of above 50kbps you are fine. If you are worried about overall bandwidth usage, at 24kbps an average 2 hour slot would use around 20MB.
Ok that is it so far. If I get more questions I will post them up.

Whilst I was away over the last couple of days the station crashed and I didnt know, its back now though for those of you missing your fix.
Maedhros2005-01-20 21:29:41
Hmm, could I try DJing or something? I've got a bunch of great 70s guitar stuff, blues, and some new stuff, like Jet and Marooned 5. I'll try to keep it mixed up and not to my own preferences .

I'm surprised a Divine hasn't been onto this thread, I'd like to see some Admin thoughts, 'cause this sounds good.
If they have and I missed it, meh, Shiro smite me

Do the songs have to be all in English?
Maedhros2005-01-21 03:29:11
What're your preferences?
If I do DJ, I'm definately putting some Japanese FFX songs on , like Suteke Da Ne (I think that's what it was called, I haven't listened to it for a long time).
Some Rammstein too (German).

Shou: Like I said I will take requests if you want other songs, I just need a copy of it, if I dont have it. And not all the songs are in english, there are at least some italian songs in there and I wouldnt be suprised if there are a couple of french ones and germans ones too
Maedhros: I have sent you a PM, I would be more than happy for you to DJ

Since now seems to be the quietest time for the radio, I am taking it down for a short while to do some maintenance I will post once it is back.
Unknown2005-01-21 20:43:04
I am also taking this brief down period to rip a few hundred more tracks, trying to mix it up, so adding a bit more classical, some more dance, a bit of classic 50s crooning, some old school punk, and few other things.

Station is back, and added about 350 songs to the playlist, taken off some of the ones that were "unsafe" (as in a lot of people are likely not to like it(cradle of filth, deicide, boltthrower etc) but if people want to listen to them they are there by request
Gwynn2005-01-22 00:36:19
When I get my act together (possibly on Sunday) I am going to pre-record a few 2 hour slots (with voice commentary ), and then have the broadcasted at some particular point in time (which will be regular). What kind of times do you all listen to this, so I know when to broadcast for most listeners?
Summer2005-01-22 00:53:21
How about more than 1 slot? Don't deprive the rest of us Doesn't look like there's a whole ton of people fighting to DJ, so hopefully it won't be a problem.
Unknown2005-01-22 08:56:43
Yes at the moment I have no DJs, every keeps saying they are interested then back out of it. Gwynn was the only one who showed committment but when we tried live broadcasting with him, it didn't work correctly. So he has found an alternative way that he is going to do his shows.
But everyone is more than welcome to DJ even if its only for an hour, its nice to have a mix, and I promise you, most of you will find it enjoyable and addictive.

OK, I have something special coming up soon, I am very active in my local music scene, and a lot of my friends asked if I could play some of there stuff. So I am going to run a local music session. If any of you are in, or have friends with, bands who would be interested in air-time could you please ask them for permission for us to broadcast (or if its your band, give me permission) and send me a couple of MP3s.
Thanks alot.
Thanks alot.

Bah, I would have uptimes similar to yours for last few days, but I sometimes stop it when I leave for a few minutes. Need to save bandwidth due to monthly limitations.
Btw, it's getting a bit repetitive...

So thats the other IP I didnt know *grin* Yes I know its getting repetitive. Because my DJs keep bailing on me. I am trying to buy some more CDs to increase the range. and I have a lot of music that is on my "unsafe" list, which I can add if you guys want.
Edit: And you can always hit me with requests.
