Don't take it to heart Dan, we don't hate Americans, we just hate your government, your culture and everything you stand for.

And yeah, the community aspect is one of the things that first drew me to it as well. One of the 3 Esperantanoj I have met actually met his wife through the Esperanto community, she being Russian and not speaking any English.

Consequently Daganev I've always thought Yiddish would be an interesting language to learn, for some of the reasons you stated (there are people practically everywhere who speak it). Though I'm just a Gentile, so maybe its not for me.

Edit: Removed a stupid typo

*agrees*

And Shiri, katakana and kanji are way different. Katakana is used to represent foreign Japanese words, and is sort of similar to hiragana, except a bit more "blocky". Kanji is just basically a copy of the Chinese script, and is far more complicated and detailed.

After reading that comment and watching Ghost in the Shell: Innocence with handy subs, I now understand. happy.gif

If you want to learn Yiddish, I suggest only learning it for curiosities sake, or so you can read old newspaper archives in Europe. The only Yiddish words I know are the Americanized ones.
However, Jews in every country pray in Hebrew.

Shiri, which comment are you refering to? GITS:I is too cool to miss out a refrence, and I feel lost.
Shiri2005-01-18 18:18:27
The one when the guy with the dodgy eyes goes in the shop, and it says on the door something about how the sign says "Happy" upside down because it's tradition to use the Chinese lettering and stuff. I forget exactly.
Daganev2005-01-18 21:32:55
Ahhh ok. *snap* yeah I allready understood that part. And here I was hoping for something interesting... I was so upset when I didn't realize the words said Emet. It was spelled Ameth or something.
Shiri2005-01-18 21:45:11
...didn't it say aemath? And then maeth? *confused*

Daganev2005-01-19 05:49:33
yeah it did, and it was a terrible although 100% accurate way of doing an old Hebrew kabalistic game.
I'm not sure if they explained it well in the movie or not but..
Aleph = A
Mem = M
Tauph = T

in Hebrew the word for truth would be AMT, and the word for death MT
pronounced in english as Emet and Mate.. however in the proper way of converting non latin letters to latin letters it would be Aemath and Maeth. The TH is pronounced like a T with a breath at the end.

I say this is an old game because its done across the board. Especially with this word.
AMT = truth, MT = death AM = Mother or If AT= is a word that is used to give emphasis but has no meaning itself. A is the first letter of the alphabet, M the middle letter and T the last letter.

so... Truth without the begining of the story leads to false conclusions, or death. (hence he knew it was an illusion) Similiarly, Truth, without the end of the story is just a begining like a pregnant woman, or its a story that has many possible endings.. its an IF... and a story without the middle in meaningless in itself but it can be used to teach other things.

Hebrew is so much fun to play with that way.

Esperantano, not Hebrew.
Daganev2005-01-19 10:09:09
go back to the hijack thread!

Esperanto is fun to play with too! It just hasn't made it into a GITS movie yet.

What is Ghost in the Shell, anyway?
Shiri2005-01-19 20:17:01
Bizarre anime about robots etc. and/or theory that machines, because they are created by humans, have souls. I don't really understand either.
Unknown2005-01-19 20:23:46
Ohhh, now I remember. I think I may have seen that on the 'net somewhere. Is that where "We own all your bases" or something comes from?
Daganev2005-01-19 20:28:40
*splutter* *spasm*... what is ghost in the shell?

well have you heard of Blade runner?
Have you heard of the matrix?

Those two stories/films are mere comic books compared to the fast encylopic litarture that is GITS.

GITS is a Manga turned Movie, turned Sequal to movie, turned animated series that asks the question. "where is the line drawn between Human and Technology?" It deals with issues of virtual self, soul, cybernetics, hacking, nature of information, terrorism, authority, rebelion... the list goes on.

The best part about it, is that it explores the concepts but gives very few answers. And has a possiblity of making you think.
Shiri2005-01-19 20:28:49
No, Zero Wing, from which "All your base are belong to us", is COMPLETELY different, originating from a horribly translated Genesis game, made into a vaguely amusing Flash video, and completely hyped out of all proportion. Ghost in the shell isn't even similar, let alone related. tongue.gif
Daganev2005-01-19 20:29:28
NO, All your Base are belong to us, comes from a mistranslation of Japanese video game.
Unknown2005-01-19 20:31:02
Heh, oops.

Oh, and I love the Matrix and its sequels tongue.gif.

I can't understand it, but I'm pretty sure he's not being exclusive, he just wants to find people who speak it. Not teach little 13 year olds who think it sounds cool. I dunno, though.

You make it sound as though 13 year olds wanting to learn things is bad. And besides, even if 13 year olds do want to learn it because it's cool, does that really matter?

Good gods. A valued piece of pop culture is being forgotten! Quick! To the Flash Animation!

Edit: Well crap. Can't see what that did, but my work blocked it due to "sex". One more ding on my internet record. I search for random useless stuff, it's all blocked...
