As far as I can tell, most IC punishments in the realms (set by guilds/cities) involve loss of rank/fines/being kicked out.
Has anyone ever roleplayed punishments for minor infractions instead? (Trying to think of interesting ideas, but public humiliation such as being pilloried or being publically flogged in front of other Magnagorans come to mind (boring, but still more interesting than just tells involving a talking to).
I'd be interested in hearing people's views on this - you could easily alter your character description to show the effects for the next few days as you healed.
Just my thoughts....

Hmmm. It would be nice to see, but I can also see poor roleplayers having a field day with it. "Ahaha, you missed me! *jumps out of the way of rotten foodstuffs* Missed me again, ****er!" But please, yes. It would make a nice change to the CDF or whatever.

Would add some nice rp, I say go for it. I mean, how many regular citizens actually know what a disfavour does anyway?

We tried crucifying in Stavenn. Eventually they actually made a cross to impale corpses on for show. Horific as it was, it was something original.

Well I know at the moment my novice Nihilist wouldn't understand that a cdf or gdf had any affect on her....
Estarra2005-01-12 17:05:48
Altering your character's description isn't much of a punishment and not much of a stretch for RP, but think about sweeping the city streets of rat dung, sitting in a kitchen peeling potatos, washing your guildmaster's underwear from dusk til dawn....
Daganev2005-01-12 18:09:52
Thats a good idea... I believe I will now implement this. Estarra, you are the best, hello.
So far all I've been doing is a good thwaping or two.

If a time came when my character's rp needed her to do something against the rules, I'd love it, LOVE IT, if the leadership of whatever org she broke the rules of enforced a nasty/embarassing rp punishment...even in conjunction with a fine or whatever other regular punishment they wanted to give. It would make it fun for me! Maybe less fun for her...but that's the fun of it!

Magnagora executes people who are disrespectful. Well, they really just look away if the person being disrespected decided to shut the other person up, especially if it's a high ranked person of a guild punishing a lower ranked punk.

You made me reread this whole damn thread, wondering when Nika and Arale got back.
*cuff* No more necroes!

The fact that this thread was necroed makes my laugh hysterically, as I -just- spent yesterday 'discussing' the merits and possibilities of public punishment happening in Glomdoring.
Creepy.
Creepy.

And, of course, ignoring the downsides. Yes, hilarious.

I was going to ask why such a little thing was being talked about on the forums, good thing it isn't!

Downsides? It's brilliant. I hated disfavoring people. They were angry constantly until they got their rank back. Executions are flashy, reinforce the social order, and when they're done, they're done. That's the best part of all.

Executions are not nearly the same as being pubically humiliated. I'm sure you can see the difference. There is little that is "brilliant" about purposely stripping people of their dignity as a punishment.

I dunno.. you make an example of someone like that, and other people take the hint. Its damn effective, and has been proven throughout history to be so. And in a game where death means nothing, and where GDFs mean relatively litle.. humilation can be a real motivator.
Edit: Not to mention, ever thought the person might enjoy the chance to RP?

.. a real motivator to make you change orgs.
But hey... I dunno why I'm taking sides. Aiakon constantly humiliates people...
