You know, I was about to post about hannibal lecture... and roark has to go and beat me to it.

Theres a great bumper sticker "I live in my own world, everyone knows me there."

I find insanity to not mean that you can't learn from society. I think it normally means, those things which everybody knows, so they never talk about or express, an insane person does not know. So while everyone knows sunsets are pretty and killing people is wrong, an insane person finds them ungly and killing gives them a sense of pride. But licking someone in public, would be a behaviour, I think, that would quickly be learned as something not to do.

Its easy for me to plane an insane charachter because I allreayd am one. The hard part is playing these Sane roles!

Was that post purposely typed in an insane manner?

Well first, you can't go and say Geomancers are retards because a few people do that. I will guarantee that almost every guild has at least one person who is just there to be silly.

I've always that a truly insane Geomancer would revel at the beauty of the Earth plane and the Taint, glorify it and seriously believe it. Not just, oh, that's pretty. They'd feel like they're really a part of the earth. And this is actually harder to explain than I thought it would be :/. There really aren't any that roleplay this though. I almost prefer that though. I would rather have no one roleplaying insanity than everyone just acting silly.

Dear Etanru,
Maybe, maybe not, the world will never know...

Yeah...there's so many things like that, that people can avoid while staying IC, but it's not really...in depth RP. Or if it is, people miss it. I mean, Merloch and Jasper both do in abundance the whole ritual mystical thing, but it just seems to get brushed aside a lot? It's kinda sad. Aquamancers and Geomancers too. It's really unavoidable, eh.
Shamarah2005-01-13 22:14:41
The problem is that there isn't really much to do about that all. Other than saying things like, "Revel in the power of the Taint/Water!" there isn't a whole lot to do, and the elemental planes are basically just bashing grounds right now, because there's nothing to DO on them.

Try RPing someone with a split personality (I'm not talking "Me, Myself and Irene" here) and pull it off. THAT would be a hard role to keep up; the sweet innocent 'normal' Elfen girl who, for some reason she does not know, sometimes has blackouts and wakes up in different places with a foggy memory. How did she get there? Oh, she must walk in her sleep, nothing to worry about. Why are her hands covered in scratches? She must have been bitten by insects and scratched herself. Why does that Furrikin in Estel cower when she walks past, she can only remember being anything but nice to him...the poor little guy must have social problems. Yep, that must be it.

I'm tempted to try this now. I would, if I could devote the time to an extra character. Maybe later Laneth will develop a split personality later on (though, from my understanding, they usually develop after suffering sever horrific traumatic stress, probably during childhood).

Heh, I was actually considering doing something like that for Guido. Sometimes his 'old' self would break through and scream warnings, to disobey him, to not listen to anything he has to say, to forgive him, and to try and kill himself. Failing that, he would beg anyone within earshot to kill him themselves, but then the tainted Guido would reassume control and order everyone to disregard what happened. Maybe i'll try it in the future.
Daganev2005-01-14 01:20:50
I've done split personality, with Daganev in Orone. The real hard part is getting others to stop yelling at you for breaking your role.

If your able to play different types of charachters, split personality, is just deciding when to switch.
Ofcourse if you make it too simple, like "this personality loves to hunt" and "this peronality loves to sit and talk" well then thats not a split peronality.

Playing an iliterate dumbass has been quite fun though, especially in a world where so much is "written"

I doubt Riyo or Morslade ever thought they would be sitting there teaching someone the differnce between a C K and S
Maedhros2005-01-14 01:22:45
My bad. The things on M aren't really prongs anyways.

But that was funny biggrin.gif. Great roleplay.
Daganev2005-01-14 01:31:53
ok that was annoying, I saw that Fain was here and was like... oooh an admin writing something, and then I refresh and Fain is gone and there is no new post *sniffle*
Shiri2005-01-14 01:37:45
Yeah, Roark was looking at Aeromancy for ages...disappointing. *g*
Akraasiel2005-01-14 01:50:46
Insanity is hard as hell to roleplay properly, I've been trying to perfect a character who is insane for a while now. I think Ive found a happy medium with Ak. Normally he is an intense and feels annoyed with everything in general, but maintains his own code of honor, etc. Then there are times when he gets all twitchy. He claims to hear voices, and descends into madness for a while until he shifts back out again. The general difference between the two is one has an attitude of constant frustration, and futility, driven by a need to understand more of the world, while the other personality is driven by a voice in his head, and desires to burn the world to cinders, not because of any hatred or whatnot, merely because he likes the beauty of the flame, and has no care for other mortal life.

It took a long time to develop a good balance, but there is a large problem with RPing a madman properly. If youre doing it right, you tend to piss people off, whereas if you are roleplaying poorly and just calling it madness, people dont mind as much. When you are RPing insanity, you have to RP the consequences thereof, but when you arent RPing at all, and just being an idiot (munsia, case in point) it takes a long time for the consequences to show up, if they show up at all.

At least you are allowed to do it. I once tried to play a dumb troll in the Infernals of Achaea. "Ufthak no like Church. Ufthak want Church blood!" In return for actually playing a troll with troll intelligence I got yelled at and told to speak normally. mad.gif

I really like watching that take place. I don't know why, it just makes me feel and warm and tingly tongue.gif. But seriously, I guess it's because I'm from Achaea and no one I knew really roleplayed. There was one person once, and I really can't remember his name, but he was unable to read and had a bit of an accent, kind of like Daganev. I remember I was citizening him in Cyrene and had to read the entire Cyrene Codex out loud to him. That was actually fun, even though it was repetitive having to copy and paste it all out.

But back to Insanity. I was actually thinking that if for some reason I leave Magnagora, I'd like to work on this little storyline I've been devising. Whether or not I would actually get to do it I'm not sure, but it involved a split-personality-like thing, only more of a possession of sorts. It's a tad complicated, but I was thinking it could be more like a mini character event if anything. Although I suppose I could still do it in Magnagora.

Daganev is quite good at playing his role. Especially the whole Furloch bit (Before Furloch had a player). He plays the illiterate tae'dae very very well I must say. Kudos.

Guido's little brand of insanity is caused by his soul fracturing due to the neverending tide of death and hatred brought against him during his time as a Crow and the events afterword, and then the taint coming in to sort of 'fill in the cracks'. He's basically possessed by it.
Unknown2005-01-14 03:54:29
You know Guido, I never thought you were insane actually... Are you meant to come across that way or is your insanity meant to be obvious? Maybe I just have not interacted with you enough...
Hazar2005-01-14 03:59:05
You must not talk to him IC. It's very clear that he's possessed by something...especially when you've known him during and after the DoC.
Daganev2005-01-14 05:48:16
Guido's sketches of hanging people on various torture devices was beyond cool. I could actually see the crappy looking stickfigures in my head.
