Very interesting idea...... but won't be a bit like one of those tamagochi stuff? Those "virtual pets" . Plus it would cut on your roleplaying since you'll have do nothing but sit and FEED BABY, BURP BABY, COMFORT BABY, etc. for the first few years.

I wonder how much a baby-making-and-caring system would sell for..
Iridiel2005-01-17 16:48:35
So you have that lovely couple of a Merian and an Elf who have a baby. And after a few years, the baby discovers he is an aslaran, just like the couple's neighbour.
Here you have, a divorce, and the starting point for a great soap opera when the kid starts wondering where did he came from.
Not to count, there's people in game, like that A person, that aren't mentally unable to have a kid. Imagine you have to rp the son of her. You would drop your character after a month of "I am your mum, so lick my feet and buy me shiny things"

I like the idea, although it's a little graphic. I know some people are into MUDsex, so, y'know...they could always MAKE BABY WITH <> straight after it.
I dunno about roleplaying children that are very young, though. Start at about 12 years old. Because if they do suicide, you can always make the excuse that they wandered and were killed, or they ran away.
What will your name be? iggy
Would you like to join an existing family? Alternatively, you can make your own character background. yes
Excellent. There's currently 2 families looking for families.
1) (Magnagoran) (Dracnari)
2) (Celestian) (Merian)
3) (Magnagoran) (Viscanti)
Please choose a family. - 1
You have taken on the role of the son of HARRY MAGNAGORAN and BETTY MAGNAGORAN. Both will be informed of your decision, and they will get to know you as soon as possible. There will be a trial waiting period of 5 months, in which time you will NOT officially be their child. At the end of the trial period, if either you or they are not satisfied, you may decline.
-------
If the newbie was an utter idiot and the parents didn't want them screwing up their roleplay, they'd end it before the trial period, and the newbie would not be a member of the family - he'd start over at the Portal of Fate, (but keep his current level). The child would be given a certain age and pre-written description, (written by the parents).
Also, it would mean parents can't name their babies. Just don't bring it up in discussion while the baby's a mob. Because it's pretty mean, not letting new characters customize themselves AT ALL.
If the kid's 12 years old, he'd be limited on what he can do. When he reaches 16 years old, he will be asked if he wants to take the introduction tour. Then he would level and start the game proper.
----
Also, scrap the FERTILIZE bit. It's too graphic. Just do MAKE BABY WITH <>, then it will say:
You are about to create a baby with Betty. Would you like to continue? agree
Harry is about to create a baby with you. AGREE to make a baby, and anything else to decline.
There wouldn't be anything else. If they want to MUDsex it out, they can, but you shouldn't force them to read...explicit stuff like this.

MAKE BABY IN
Sorry I must have a sick mind or something but...
What position?
and At what?
Like.... MAKE BABY IN MISSIONARY POSITION AT 60 DEGREES
Or... MAKE BABY IN DARK DAMP ROOM AT 10 IN THE MORNING
I'm sorry, I got the Kama Sutra from my brother for my birthday and I read a few pages until my parents confiscated it. They said they might give it back to me when I'm older... However I haven't stop thinking about it... maybe I can get it in pop-up form in the library or something.... anyways...
I thought Iggy's idea of a trial period is a good idea. If the kid turns out to be a total nut, you'd get two very unhappy people. I mean it'd be sad if the kid turns up in a timewarp or a shrub. Who'd want a shrub as a kid bar druids (-avoids Hartstoners from now on-)
As for Iridel thingy... maybe you can only have babies of the same race or... you can pick the race for the baby after all the kid must take after the mum or the dad
Woot for 25 posts and making to Inept *flex*

All gross possible impressions aside, perhaps instead of having a potential psychotic rampaging nut of a baby on the loose, have them entirely NPC. The reasoning for this: Perhaps when they turn a certain age, they set off into the world as an adventurer, with a random chance of becoming either a) a merchant, b) a soldier, c) a scholar, d) a polititian, or e) a farmer or other common profession.
Think about it. After a few ingame years of being out on their own, their profession begins to affect you. Merchants could send you a helpful portion of their profits monthly; soldiers could send you back certain special items that they found on their campaigns; scholars could eventually develop an item for you that could teleport you to four or five important locations (set by you or pre-determined) instantly, or something else (feel free to suggest something); polititians might eventually set aside a piece of land for you, and depending upon how well you manage it, you can collect taxes or whatever off it; and finally there's the last one, which, though basic in terms of status, is more elaborate to describe.
If one parent was a forger, and the other was a cook, then there'd be a 50/50 chance of the child to become either a miner, who'd periodically supply the forger with the commodeties he or she would find useful; or a farmer, who'd supply the cook with the commodeties he or she would find useful. If not a 50/50 chance deciding what the child would become, then perhaps the system would take into account of which parent paid more attention to the child, and so reward the more caring parent.
As for the actual way a baby would be recieved, I think that it'd be more beneficial to only allow adoption from somewhere. The other alternative is just...wrong. There are some players that are too young for that kind of thing anyway. And besides, odds are something particularly bad/wrong/both will come because of that option eventually anyway.

No no no no no. Absolutely bad idea to have children a way to powergame and get items and comms for you.
Saran2005-11-20 13:18:16
sorry if i didn't notice this suggestion.
but what if after the baby reaches a certain age the parents could make a descision to have the baby either become an npc or a player? if npc it could wander around a city or the manse that their parent might own programmed with responses based on how their parents treated them (overfed might eat more, talking to the baby alot). if player then they could register the baby as a player who could then wander around doing kid quests that could give them a boost later in life perhaps a child that performs certain honoursy quests could learn skills faster or have some stats elevated, perhaps another advantage.

Hmm, surprisingly, I am not opposed to this idea. I mostly agree with Nyla, if the children are NPCs and are both rare and do not serve any powergaming purpose, it could work.
Making pregnancy too realistic would be a problem though - it would have to be a very simplified and glossed over version. Also, the amount of coding in adapting to each different race would be substantial.
Think about Faelings/Elfen... you'd need one set of conditions for an Elfen/Elfen union, one for an Elfen/Faeling union, and one for a Faeling/Faeling union (no pregnancy in this case... a toadstool sprouts and grows until one day you find a little faelingling underneath!).
Maybe this is just too much trouble?

so long as i can RP a baby/child hating killer! I will be murphy, the child killer....
The ultimate griefer, killing someones babies. On that note however, the burstorgans affliction can double as bashbrain for the child!

Malicia2005-11-20 18:19:00
Nah, Munsia has a sweet side. In the meantime, good idea for having children. It'd have to be perfected somehow, so that random people would be unable to use it in order to power game.
Cairam2005-11-20 18:34:22
Nooooo!!
If I and my husband want to have a baby, we will rp it out ourselves, thank you very much. There is much more freedom in the things you can do that way.
Imagine you're in a battle, defending against raiders, and suddenly the npc baby starts screaming and wailing because it needs its diaper changed? And this would be an affliction upon the one carrying the child, giving them both aeon and stink. No no no.
In Avalon, people had babies... And they would get stolen, ransomed and killed, and... Nostradamus (One of the evil gods of Thakria) even ate a few... It was incredibly sad.
