Nah, leave religious debates to fanatics (pro-religion, anti-religion). It is exasperating how intense and bouyant these debates can be... Maybe people should just agree to disagree and be done with it and realize anyone will do whatever they wish and believe too.

It's like those morons trying to change the pledge of alliegence.

But worse.

AD and BC are widely used.  And let's not even get into a religious debate.

I don't know what the pledge of allegiance is, but it can't be that bad if calling things CE and BCE are bad, because they are not bad things. I'm not going to try and make you use them, but saying it's stupid for me and the huge load of other people that use them is wrong in itself.

Shiri, people should be free to do whatever they want to do with themselves. Get piercings, wear a dress, smoke, drink, wear high heels, wear a tuxedo, bald yourself, sky dive... preach to Yahweh, Visnu, Satan, Horned God, Charles Darwin, Mason, etc... and use whatever text they desire. Of course, always when this things you do aren't imposed over others... People who wish to use BCE, CE so! It is your right, just don't expect everyone else to follow around.

Edit: Oh, also debating over something that has turned into a simple formality must be ridiculous. For me, people should even date things like PT (Present Times, P (Past), Future)... Whatever triggers you fancy.
Shiri2005-01-31 21:00:49
That's entirely my point. Use BC or AD if you want, but do NOT complain when I use CE and BCE. Which is what was happening.
Desdemona2005-01-31 21:05:08
Hm, no. I believe the complaints weren't targeted at you. Just to people who like to impose BCE CE onto others. So, you are not the victim *comfort* No one is after you, Shiri! biggrin.gif

Edit: A small correction. Also... I noticed the topic has completely derailed. So next person who replies, care to back track? Also, this is supposed to be the Funnies, maybe we should all keep our good humour here. ninja.gif
Shiri2005-01-31 21:14:30
Yeah, I know I wasn't being targetted, just the CE/BCE thing in general was. tongue.gif

the Pledge of Alliegance is the a US thing.

'I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all,'

People are whining about the under god part.
Silvanus2005-01-31 21:39:35
They want to change it to this:

"I pledge allegiance, to the Flag, of the United States of America, and to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, under Canada, above Mexico, with liberty and justice for all."

Sarcasm.
Nementh2005-01-31 21:48:53
Although in all seriousness, this was the proposed change:

'I pledge allegiance my Flag of the United States of America and my nation for which it stands, one nation under equality, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all, born and unborn.'
Shiri2005-01-31 22:04:18
Huh, that doesn't seem so bad. blink.gif

EDIT: Oh, hm, anti abortion stuff too. Dunno then.
Nementh2005-01-31 22:16:57
The born unborn part was apparnetly added to try and get the 'conservitive' supreme court people to like it. However, we have a supreme court which refuses to make decisions, and in every case put before it, it has found a legal loop hole to kick it so they don't have to make a ruling one way or the other.

Amen. (Hehehe).

Aww... sounds to me like some people enjoy being polemical. So, on the propose pledge, they are not only trying to remove any connections to symbolism (faith is that), but also they whant to fling you with promoting precepts.

Ya know, maybe the US should go ahead and change their Great Seal seeing how it is filled with spiritual symbolism. Also, the "In God we Trust" too, oh, and vouch for elimination of the Masons and all and every secret society, sect with some sort of methaphysical orientation... and then place someone like Bill Gates as president, and US's top physicist as vice... abolish politics and stablish a whole system based on ruling with the cold-calculative grasp of science and capitalism. In the end, maybe we should all revere and worship the atomic bomb, quasi-Planet of the Apes.

tongue.gif Kay, I was just ranting here. Pay no attention.
