And the original point I made is still valid, its in IREs best interest to leave out words which in a large proportion of their player base is quite a severe insult. Maybe because you didnt grow up as a kid in a playground where the first tip of the tongue insult people would throw at you was spaz or spastic. Its not just occassionally an insult over here, its an insult, full stop used a lot. And it seems from all the aussies, its a major insult there too

Great point Eldril. I'm suitably pissed off that the Administration would actually use the word "taint" in their game. I mean, I'm not even going to go into how offensive it is to refer to someone's "taint" and the extensive use of it in the game really turns me off. It's bad enough that the realm's name conjures up imagery of sexual misconduct without referring to a person's "taint" constantly.

Well, if we're going to be PC, I demand that they rename the Wiccan archetype. As a Wiccan, I find it offensive that my religion is portrayed as allowing one to change people into frogs, summon fae to kill people with, ride flying brooms, and hex people. It follows many of the stereotypes that have been propagated throughout the years, and only hinders our attempts to dispel them. While I realize that the archetype does make an effort to be considerate of the RL practice of Wicca, it's allowance of too much fantasy material turns it from a good attempt at showing how we really are, to a muddled half-truth which does more harm than good.

Actually, it was something I believe that was seriously thought about before using that name.
You can be sarcastic all you like, but anything that breaks the reality of Lusternia is going to be excised fairly quickly, and obviously something that is taken as an insult on an OOC matter does exactly that. A good fantasy world worries about such things not necessarily because of PC, but simply to help suspend disbelief.

The fact that it was changed does the exact opposite for me. Rather than helping to suspend disbelief, it disenchants my entire notion of immersion.

Actually some language gurus said that according to them, the best English spoken and written in the World is Singapore?
Strange huh?

I understand the point of where the gods are at. Overall, they sortta have to change it.
What I find troublesome, is that so many peoepl are worried so much, over somethgin so little. "Oh, no, someone might be offened by
People need to learn to handle it. Tiss the entire reason I hate PC stuff, because someone somewhere may possibly get offened by some random off chance, and so you can't say that. If no one can handle dealing with being offened, and no one is allowed to do anythgin that might offend someone, then no one woudl ever do anything ever.

I think you seem to miss, that its not pc that I care about it, as far as a british person is concerned that might as well have read "being too much of a fuckhead to continue a civilised debate..." which is a direct insult. Its not to do with hurting the feelings of imaginary people, its just an insult.
Jerah2005-01-22 13:25:54
Wow. Are you all really this concerned about convincing us you're 'good people'? Because that's all I can see. A bunch of people getting outraged over something that doesn't matter so they can pat themselves on the back and feel like they've done their good deed for the day without actually -doing- anything.
If that was anyone's goal here, job well done.

I had no intention of feeling good when I started this; I just wanted the word removed because I took offense. This post would have stopped a long time ago had Rhysus not began slating at first me for being 'anal-retentive', and then others who took offense.
Sylphas2005-01-22 19:50:00
What annoys me more than anything is how we're losing perfectly good words because they eventually got an offensive meaning attached to them. There are plenty of words that are insults, I'm fine with banning those. But to lose a normal word is just wrong. I have plenty of gay friends, but I wouldn't be offended if a jolly NPC was described as gay. If it's used correctly, there is no reason to change. I don't like to offend people, but if it's not being used in an offensive manner, I think it's just people being oversensitive if they get offended by it, and in that case I don't really care how they feel.
There's a point where being nice to people turns into being paranoid about offending people, and it is crossed all too often.
