Doh, I should have known that. I only studied Germanicus a year and a half ago.

My initials (VLCIV) add up to 59 if you take a very liberal view of Roman Numerals.
I was born on the 59th day of the year (February 28th).
Wee.

Umm no....
59 would be ILIX...

Yes, hence the 'liberal view'
VLCIV
VLC - ((5 under 50) under 100) = 55
IV=4
VLC+IV=59
It's my understanding that it is incorrect to write anything in Roman Numerals that has the higher number after the lower number (as in, IIC would not be valid for 98, or 102)
Hence, 'liberal view'.

That is a bit beyond liberal... but ok...
Unknown2005-01-26 02:59:17
Well, in no other way does 'VLCIV' attribute any form of legitimate roman numerals .

There arent words in the english or japanese languages to answer that... that must mean Im liberal beacuas my name is spelled Raan instead of Rain... or because I intend on destroying all grammatical barriers because it so amusedly annoys others.... (including myself)

Just remind me, Caligula WAS the one who ordered the sea whipped for defying him, and after building a dock, or a bridge, knocked all the slaves off it and beat those who were trying to get back on with boathooks, right? Memory is a little fuzzy.

Sounds like him... he went a little loony after he was nearly killed by some disease.
But before someone says it, he DID NOT make his horse a senetor.

I did not understand your point in this post.
Daganev2005-01-26 03:32:24
he did not appreciate your use of the word "liberal" to mean "not following any rules"
Unknown2005-01-26 04:23:08
I took 'liberal view' to mean, not following the rules in an exact form. I did, however, use the rules logically, as there is no other logical means of looking at VLCIV other than five under fifty, all under one hundred, adding one under five. (this is based on the logic that IX is 9, not 11, and IV is 4, not 6, etc.)
definition of liberal:
"Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry."

I love talking for other people.... its so much fun.
if i right owt my sentance lyke this, does that make it libberal grammor and speling?
by the way, I would have used Liberal view also, but I'm not such a stickler for these things, but I beleive that was the point he was trying to make.

A liberal view still reconizes that rules exsist, and in Roman Numerals, you only go back one place. IX=9 and IV is 4... but IIV is not three, and IIX is not eight.
Therefor, even liberally taken, VLC can not be 55.
Further more, the number proceeding the V X L C M etc... can only be a one. IE: IV IX IL IC etc...

Let me put it this way - V, L, C, I, and V are all Roman Numerals. I, as a gimmick, one day, decided I was going to see what I could get out of it. V+L+C+I+V doesn't work, so I followed the following logic, let's call it... Romanx numerals...
Prerequisite:
I=1
V=5
X=10
L=50
C=100
Any number followed by a number of same or lesser value adds that value to its sum. Any number preceded by a number of lesser value subtracts that value from its sum.
In Romanx Numerals, VLCIV = 59. Better?

Hint: I care less about what official rules were, than the logic of the rules. A negadecimal system does not exist, yet I still enjoy performing complicated calculations in it, and am hoping one day I can find a use for it.
You appear to be a student of Latin. Could you write an original text in Latin? Do you have the ability to make new words? Evolve new grammar rules for situations that do not exist in the language in its official form? How would Latin have evolved if it had remained a dominant language?
THAT'S the fun of it.

Raan2005-01-26 15:40:59
Not that Im saying thinking outside the box is a bad. Just seems to be no logic behind some of it.
