Perhaps, instead of Richter's straight portal, perhaps make it so you can attach it do a door? It gives people an opportunity to steal the key and break through the doors, but leaves a convienent thing for Richter in there so he can walk right through. Hell, mebbe he can avoid getting locked in his own manse.
