How often do people actually play chess? Since it's pretty difficult in game...

In the aquamancers we have a guild chess club with a rating ladder. once I year I make pairings and the people go off and play. People also play other people on the ladder without a playing for a score change as well. It is quite fun and a good way to meet people. I encourage other guilds to start their own chess clubs, then we could have a world playoff or tournoment some time. Contact me in game if you want to know more about how I organized it and how stuff works.

I love the chess system in Lusternia. If only I could get a board in my manse.

I don't see why you think it's hard to play in Lusternia. I've always found the IRE chess system extremely easy to use.

It's difficult compared to point and click interfaces such as www.chessclub.com, also, the fact that everything on black's side is reversed (h8 is referred to a1 if you play black).

I used to give simuls in Imperian, me vs. 5 at once, and win them all wink.gif

I just added it up, and I've played 11717 -rated- games on ICC since joining (doesn't include unrated)

That %life includes the two total years I wasn't a member wink.gif

Sure, it's going to be more difficult than using a GUI, that's pretty obvious, but it's a pretty stalwart implementation as far as text based play is concerned.

I found it really, really annoying. Well, on Achaea anyway, because it was bugged and sometimes froze up and told me EVERYTHING was illegal, even though I hadn't lost or anything. It was infuriating, and I haven't tried it on Lusternia because of it.

Try it. The only thing I've found I didn't know was no castleling if you king was in check.
Daganev2005-01-28 19:16:26
Magnagora had a chess competition, unfortunatly the guy organizing it got shrubbed so it hasn't really taken off again.
Daganev2005-01-28 19:31:44
ok so I log in and the first post I seee is Magnagora having a nother chess tournament.

This thread makes so much more sense now.

It's no different from things like chess on the acorn electron/bbc b/spectrum....in fact it's easier than some of those games were as you don't have to use proper notation....

JMHO huh.gif

Lusternia still has the completely idiotic reversed coordinates for black. Fie upon them for not fixing it!

Sheesh, I'll fix it for you. Just translate 1-8 -> 8-1 and A-H -> H-A for black.

\\/ \\/ \\/ fixed, good call.
Unknown2005-01-29 03:08:51
a-h -> h-a you mean, but totally agreed.

Err.. that is pretty standard chess rules.

Is playing chess in text actually any good? Like, is it fast/slow, complicated/simple, whatever (compared to RL chess).
Unknown2005-01-30 14:27:01
It's pretty good and rather simple.
.. with the bonus and quasi-hypnotic pleasure of seeing some graphics out of a text world.
*puff* *puff*.. don't get too addicted.
