Silvanus, that format is called "Emperor." There's no multiplayer on Apprentice, or I would really play it. Pre-...um...Invasion or so seems really bad to me, I tried an iceage block sealed deck against a friend and all the cards were OMG BORING!
Also, I hate 5 colour cards. Not gold in general, they rock, but things like Genju of the Realm just annoy me. Kodama of the Centre Tree kinda sucks too, but I guess it's bearable if you have tonnes of spirit tokens like, um...that spiritty Sengir Autocrat (anyone remember him?) Yeah, the genjus rock, but in a land deck...so you gotta have Budoka Gardeners, Azusa, Rude Awakening helps too, things like that.
The blue ninja legend, Higure, the Still Wind, is, um, 3UU, 3/4, Ninjutsu 2UU, on striking a player does...*think* I think it lets you tutor another ninja, don't have it on me, and has a 2 ability to make ninjas unblockable. I hate blue creatures.

My deck is green/white.. *loaded* with enchantments, and 19 creatures, most of which are the same. Mostly mana creatures. Enchantments like Blanchwood armour (+1/+1 for each forest in play..), pacifism, spirit link, Serra's Embrance, Sanctimony (Sure, mr straight red. Eat it. EAT IT!) That sort of thing. And, of course, my precious babies. Serra Advocate, Thorn Elemental, Patagia golem and Ancient Silverback. Oh, and Spined Wurm. Just start hurling out mana and mana creatures, due to the fact I've four thorn elementals, two worms, four Advocates and my other ones, I always draw one soon enough. And since I've always got enchantments in my hand, I can pump it up a minumum of 5, normally. And, if its the thorn elemental, its 7/7 and can ignore block and damage the player. Even played and on the 10th turn, against a bunch of weak creatures, suddenly have four elementals, stuffed with enchantments pop up? Or four 10/10 elementals beating you as if you werent blocked.. plus the regeneration enchantments on them, so even though if they die and goto 7/7, you still be in trouble. Or just play a Patagia Golem and pump it up horribly, after cramming a Spirit Link (Any damage done by the creature is given to you as health) onto something. Mostly 6th edition cards, some 7. Blah. Its pretty spiffy, and can stand up to most anything. Especially with my Stream of Life cards and Insect Swarm.
Shiri2005-01-30 14:28:47
Life gain. I love those decks, pity they never really work against anyone good.
Yrael2005-01-30 14:37:10
Heh, only the five cards - sanctimony and those four greenies - wait, make it 7, had two Sacred Nectars in there. Works fine, heh. Especially if your opponent is black and uses Dark Banishing on your poor little Serra Angel one turn before it gets to smack him into small and chunky kibbles. I wonder what ever happened to that card.
Shiri2005-01-31 01:21:56
Serra Angel keeps buggering around in the core sets, which I hate, because they're boring.
Dark Banishing, don't know if that's still around or not, but it's somehow gotten through the filter into my T2 decks so it's probably in 8th as well.

Whats maddening is when you dont get a single creature except for a Llanowar elf, have a really bad game, but end up pumping it up to the point its around 20/20, flying, first strike, spirit linked.. and then the black player whips out a dark banishing. Then, you scream, tear off your clothes and run naked into the hills, never to be seen again.

I'm the biggest MtG nerd of them all. Well, not the biggest, but one of the biggest here. I'm a certified level 1 DCI judge. Beat that with a stick.

I'm kind of curious as to what your decks actually comprise.. not the full collection of em, but just the 60 you play with, and the 20 or so you have to interchange around, heh.
Desdemona2005-01-31 05:14:04
I'll abstain from choosing a color, because I play them all... and all of them have nice features (so I like to combine the colors, though I have mono-black and a mono-green deck). My decks are: BW, BW (Zomby/Cleric), GUB, RB (made only from Kamigawa cards), RB, UW, GW, RG (beast deck), BU, and a UGBRW (Mistform/Sliver deck) a B (Mercenary/Shadow) and a Green one.
So you see, I play all the colors, sure I am not saying my decks are formidable but I enjoy playing them. Normally I am for creature removal, direct damage, reanimation, redirects, counters, creature control, and pumping creatures. So I try to use all of the abilities I like. But I am mostly a creature removal freak, so my black decks are always prone to be filled with cards like snuff or assassins.
I started playing Magic since Masques block (unofficially since Tempest because I managed to get some cards from Tempest and Urza block) all the way to Scourge, skipped Mirrodin block (I am not sure why the artifact theme didn't attract me, even when there where some cool cards) and resumed playing in Kamigawa.
To me Magic had a wonderful period throught the Urza block, a small anti-climax in Masques block, but sealed the perfect fate for Dominaria in the Invasion block, up to Scourge actual aftermath of the apocalypse (reminded me of Mad Max for some reason). Though I think that after Dominaria, Magic is simply craving to find a new home (another place for the game take place for at least two entire blocks). Because IMO, at the moment every current set they are making they are making them very specialized. I really don't like the feeling of Kamigawa being infested with Samurai's/spirits/ninjas, when probably after the third Kamigawa set we won't see any of those creatures again... Probably making Kamigawa a good set but very isolated. And for some reason, thanks to the new card faces and the new Legendary supertype, I am not wild about combining recent cards with old cards.
Anyway, I do hope the people at Wizards decide to fully develope a world again. Kamigawa does seem capable of providing an extensive and rich story.
Edit: I love how Invasion block, Onslaught block enabled to make genocide-like decks. Targetting colors, creature types and removing them entirely or something similar... while enabling you to change the attributes of your own spells.

Congratulations Mr level 1 DCI, you have a basic understanding of the rules, and are willing to not play competitively :|
I think just about anyone playing the game more than 12 months could become one with little effort.

Tavon2005-01-31 12:35:42
Yeah, pretty much. And judges *can* play competitively, becoming a judge has nothing to do with that. It's just that I am good at the rules, and suck in actual tournaments. Ah well.
Desdemona2005-02-01 19:52:19
Oh, I also missed mentioning my RU deck. Which is normally always under construction, because it is a deck a merely use to fool around and be annoying. Basically it is a Wizards+whatever deck that concentrates on bouncing, counters, tapping, and burning spells... along with Obliterates, just to um... try ensure my victory or a prolonged duel IF I manage to play it It is a very slow deck.
Shiri2005-02-01 21:34:34
Hm, Des, you should get Apprentice, and play vs. me.
(Also they have a maximum paragraph sized. PWNED. )

What is this Apprentice?
Desdemona2005-02-02 01:40:23
Has anyone seen the current results? I was expecting something quite similar to what they are... Black being most used along with Green, though with White low with a Blue second to last... it was here where it went different. Seems like Red was second to last.
Hm, anyhow... where I am from and the countries I've travelled and manage to play... Yeah, you would see the majority playing Black or Black plus anything.

Apprentice, found somewhere at www.magic-league.com, is a program, mostly graphicless (you'll see about 11 different icons, or so) used to simulate MTG play for testing. It's about 4 megs. Connects via IP, kinda annoying to connect sometimes (it giving you the WRONG IP doesn't help), and also buggers your PC somehow. I mean, I can only have two MSN windows with it open, or it spazzes out - and even if I close it, WinAMP refuses to play till I restart.
But it's all I have.
But it's all I have.
Drago2005-02-02 02:01:55
Apprentice is icky.
I want the program to automatically figure out that me tapping my draco does the opponent 9 damage unless they have something that flies.

Then go play for money on Magic Online. And who says he can't play a creature as an instant? "offering", anyone, or Mystic Snake, or whatever else? Oh yeah. I went there.
Iridine2005-02-02 04:07:59
I played magic for 4 years or so. It was fun. Eventually my boyfriend and I got extremely poor. We sold all of our cards. I've never really felt an inclination to go back. I feel like magic is collapsing in on itself because of too many cards.
I've had various "favorite colors" but these have always been based on art and flavor, not on actual usage. As far as play goes, they're all equal. But art and flavor give me a tie with blue, white, and green, for different reasons. I voted green, because I'm stuck a few years ago and thought everybody would have voted for white or blue.
