You know, I'd swear that last time I looked WoG had a no-regen clause. I'll have to check that again sometime. tongue.gif

I was stuck for ideas for what to take to this evenings game, me and my friends play every thrusday night. So I decided to go old skill and dug out my old Nercopotence deck. That has to be one of the most brokenly good black cards ever printed.

I haven't played this game in years, though after seeing this topic I found an old copy of the MTG computer game, so I can build decks from old cards (from MY era) and duel the comp...

Put together my old favorite deck, blue/green/white, kismet, stasis, birds of paradise, ley druids, prodigal sorc., and 4 time elementals. I'm not talking 4th edition white border either, I had original Legends black border time elementals. Like Richter, I stopped playing around the time I got friends and girls started noticing I existed.

I had to play against decks like this, and it is SO frustrating!

Yes, Necropotence seems like a great card. Also, Necropotence's art is awesome.
I wonder how many people abused that card for it to get banned.

I played Magic for like a year when it first came out, but soon got tired that the only way to -really- be good was to have the best cards, which you had to buy at a card shop for outrageous prices. I did have a bunch of cool cards though, mostly old school like Force of Nature and Royal Assassin, the glory days of magic. smile.gif

Today, it isn't very much of having the best cards....but have those cards by the numbers. Actually, it depends on the type of player. There are a horde of players that love to netdeck, meaning simply download a deck idea from the net and construct it, others that are ProTour aspirants who spend tons on cards to make powerful decks mainly built for competitive play. Others like me, the more casual players, just enjoy building decks with what you get and a few trade-ins, and probably base the deck around certain mechanics. Makes the game fun and a bit random. Instead of the consistent play decks where once you play against them you know what will happen.

Anyhow, do you happen to have a Black Lotus? There are probably many collectors who would drool over one. smile.gif

Really? I could have sworn it was regenable.. I think I'll find that card after I get back from work.

That tournament season was called the Black Summer, because if your deck didn't have Necropotence, you lost. Kind of the same reason that Skullclamp got banned recently, almost every tournament deck had 4.

It is kind of sad how Black has been progressively tweaked, and WoTC giving increase priority to the other colors.

On other Magic subjects, of all the Betrayers theme decks, which one would you suggest to a potential new player to start up with? For the majority, I consider those decks kinda neat and very easy to start playing Magic with.

Personally, from best to worst, I think the best choice would be:

-Spiritcraft
-Rat's Nest
-Dark Devotion (hate Yukora as a creature you keep control of)
-Ninjutsu (not sure why I don't like it)
Shiri2005-02-21 22:47:12
The ninjas are great fun, but they bother me because they don't combo well with each other. I mean, unless you want the stupid prats continually bouncing around with only one of them ever actually being there.
Desdemona2005-02-22 01:37:17
I just skimmed through the Ninja deck, mono-blue ninja doesn't really attract me. But I think it focuses on making Ninjas easy to play (gives a creature flying, unblockable, etc), also focuses on card drawing. The two rares are great, though. I'd like Higure and place him in a UB Ninja (bounce-creature removal deck). Also, Tomorrow in my Wizards deck + Azami cloud9.gif Fun.
Stetson2005-02-22 09:55:38
You could probably draft a better deck than WoTC will sell you pre-constructed =|
Unknown2005-02-22 10:05:39
Occasionally they build reasonably Pre-Cons. The rats nest one is diabolical, its like they got a monkey to pick random cards and put them in the deck. The Ninja one I bought solely because I needed another Higure. The Ogre one is playable, really playable for a newbie, just ignore Yukora. Not tried the spirit one yet.

I have a purely ninja themed deck, not designed to win in any way, just to be purely ninja, but with a good combination of Higure's ninja tutor ability, InkEyes res and Walker Of Secret Ways ninja bounce, its actually pretty playble, not tournament standard, but themed and fun.

I gave up a long time ago making tournament standard decks because it just makes the game so dull when you are building a deck to win, and not building a deck to play.

I always play Goblins or Artifacts. Ironically all my Goblin decks are hard hitting and not hordey.

At the moment I'm testing out my new blue Artfact Afinity deck, i know their old but I only just got Broodstars since I hadn't played for a while.
Akraasiel2005-02-22 16:13:27
Eh, my black and red horde/direct damage deck would be so hopelessly outmoded. I havent played MTG since the sixth grade... wow, its been a long time. I remember busting out a bunch of dark rituals and tapping all to do a full 20 in a single shot... those were the days. I dont even have a clue what yall are talking about anymore... Ice Age was about when I stopped playin. Bah... Kids these days and their newfangled card games.

Played an old buddy a month or two ago. He looked at me funny when I broke out an absurd number of tiny skeletons and my direct damage. He played some funky new card on me and wasted me in a heartbeat. Yeah... Ones skill at MTG is inversely proportional to ones skill in life.

Yeah, I personally believe the same. WoTC on occasion does bother making some decent pre-con decks, or at least decks with very good cards you may want to use on your decks. In any case, for someone who wants to start playing Magic, pre-cons are a good choice (forget Starter and Advanced).
Rauros2005-02-22 17:53:36
I started playing Magic when The Dark was released. I've been off and on over the years. Last time I was "on" was when Mirrodin was released. Haven't played anything Magic related for months.

Favorite color: Blue/Red
Favorite set: Antiquities happy.gif How can you not like the Urzatron?
Roark2005-02-23 21:03:19
Blue is best, but it needs to be mixed with white or black. My favourite deck is the Annoying Deck, a personal design that has served me well since high school. It uses blue, black, and white plus many useful artifacts, but no creatures. The idea is to turn my opponent's things against him. He plays a creature, I drop a Siezures and Mind Whip on it. Mix with Winter Orb and Armeggedon. It's always fun to see players trying to destroy their own creatures. The blue is used for control plus stasis. The control is vital so that they only play things I want them to play, which I then manipulate to kill him.
Rashidat2005-02-23 22:34:34
I played from Antiquities till about Ice Age.

Half the fun was finding ways to break cards. Throwing a Slight of Mind onto a Gloom to mess up a channeled Fireball was pure genius. Was it legal? Who the hell knew.

There was something to be said for the smaller pool of cards. It was easy to bluff having certain cards in your hand.

I don't know any of the new cards. Does banding even exist?

Shiri2005-02-23 22:49:20
Banding got chucked out about 8 years ago, owing to being stupid complicated. I mean, the old cards are still there, but there's no NEW ones.
