Aye, though in English, 'this' always refers to a previously discussed object or concept. Read it again, they aren't separate ideas.
"He jests that this might be necessary if you decide to use your other powers to end your own life."
Um, what might be necessary - heartstop?
If this is talking about heartstop, why would it be necessary if we use our other powers to end our own life?
If you wish to argue that it is simply a poorly worded statement, such as:
"He jests that might be necessary to end your own life, if you decide to use your other powers."
Well, that makes no sense whatsoever. Why would it be necessary to end your own life when you use your other skills?

Although it does look very suspicious that he uses the word (or article or whatever it is) "this", which refers to the previous sentence, and thus links them. He could be thinking seperate thoughts, but then the "this" wouldn't make any sense. It'd be like just using "he" in place of every male name.
Or, Elryn could just be faster than me, and still explain himself better.

I don't like the idea that binah and omen and darkmoon are cured by focus spirit. These skills are all 5-8 power, trans, and useless in transed out fighting? How lame.
Shiri2005-02-08 01:19:12
...Darkmoon's useless anyway, but we'll ignore that for a moment.
And eh, I dunno - I actually think that focus spirit's not that great, ESPECIALLY compared to focus mind, which is essential, and tonnes earlier.

The way I understood the phrase
"He jests that this might be necessary if you decide to use your other powers to end your own life."
Is that he Jests, that it might be necessary to use "Focus Spirit" if you decide to use Heartstop. The Jest being that if your ending your own life, you've lost focus of your spirit.
Jests means that it is a joke, and not to be taken seriously.
And just because those skills become less usefull when fighting someone with Trans Discipline, they are still usefull when attacking non trans discipline people. And thats a concept I like a lot.

Omen is not cured by focus spirit in my experience. Neither is illusory phantom, though if dark moon is, I don't see why phantom isn't.
Shiri2005-02-08 17:24:00
Maybe it's all just percentage based and some people have been luckier than others?
Shiri2005-02-08 17:24:45
I am a double post. Please ignore me. *hate internet lag*

Omen is cured by focus spirit. Phantom is an illusion, and is dispelled, instead.
Terenas2005-02-08 20:04:42
I've actually heard that critique in Arts dispell phantom + reality. But this is a hefty use of powers (8) to simply cure phantom (which only uses mana). I agree with Jello in that how come Focus spirit, a trans ability that uses merely 250 mana can cure Binah, Darkmoon, Stagcurse, and Omen (all of which uses 5 to 8 powers). But you need Critique (8 powers) to simply cure phantom that lasts 90 seconds and takes nothing but mana to cast? Simply, what the hell is the point of using Binah, Darkmoon, Stagcurse, or Omen on someone with trans Discipline when they can simply shrug it away and I'm down to half or 1/5 of my power reserve?
Amaru2005-02-08 21:47:05
10000th time, omen is not curable.

What the heck, could someone please confirm or deny this already?
Ceres2005-02-08 22:08:19
It is, 100%. Unless they've changed it in the last two weeks.
Unknown2005-02-08 23:17:29
Critique does destroy phantoms/reality/wounds or any other illusion on others or in a room. It however, costs 8 power. I use it from time to time to cure phantoms (if say I fled from combat, phantoms is so damn annoying it is sometimes worth 8 power to not just sit there).
Focus spirit cures things like winter in lowmagic, and the constitution lowering attack in highmagic.

I've only tested curing omen with focus spirit twice, and it simply didn't, didn't even try to, did nothing. Maybe it's only curable for Aquamancers or something.
Malicia2005-02-13 17:10:11
Focus spirit doesn't cure omen.
Focus spirit is a weak ability. I won't even bother transing Discipline. Ancestralcurse is worthless against those who can cure a few afflictions. FocusSpirit will remove the curse often enough, but not the afflictions. You'll still have to cure them. So what's the point? The ONLY pro factor to transing discipline is the increase in focus body time. To me, anyhow.
