Betrayal at Krondor - best.
Pool of Radiance - first I ever played (along with the Might and Magic for Commodore 64, and Phantasy 1, 2, and 3).
I have the Gold Box TSR computer game disc also. Fun stuff.

Planescape: Torment was the best.
I was a huge fan of the old Darksun games, I think Rexali knows what I'm talking about. Shattered Lands and Wake of the Ravager were freaking COOL.
BG1&2 were good, classics no doubt, and the only real objections I have are metagame and metastory items about how, in particular, chapter two of BG2 was handled, as you had more people walking up and handing you quests then you could complete. I seriously wanted to tell people to STFU so I could DO a quest without being asked to do 18 more.
IWD1 was a good game. It really wasn't much of a RP game honestly, since you made the whole party yourself there were no personalities in the game to interact with. Also, it made it way to easy to specialize your party from the get go, instead of the rag-tag assortment of personalities I'd grown to love from BG.
IWD2 was neat in that it was the first game of the 3rd edition era, and it had a lot of character creation and development options that were simply amazing...most of this was due to the change in rules, however, and not the game itself...the plot of the game itself was beyond absurd. I stopped playing when it became obvious to me that the story writers had never actually READ any of the planescape background, or even their damn monster manuals, since what they were suggesting was patently absurd and they said it as though it was perfectly natural.
It should be noted that IWD and IWD2 were not made by Bioware. Don't give them crap for the weak-ass game that is called IWD2.
NWN is an awesome game, however, you don't really see it in the prepackaged campaign. You have to see what the community has been able to do, sanctioned and assisted by Bioware, in the creation of thousands and thousands of player made modules and persistant worlds.
I will also second the mention above that there are persistant worlds out there that aren't uber leet weapon designing erotic fantasies, and are serious role playing worlds, many times with a dm/player ratio that would mean you get to play in the Lusternian version of 'events' all the time.
I do not promise anything from NWN2, as it is being developed by Obsidian...while they are good, they aren't Bioware.
Bioware's next BIG RPG project, Dragon Age, is already looking promising, despite being years away. It is simply amazing to see the community involvement in game development SO far in advance of the game's release...

Right, IWD1 was 2nd, IWD 2 was early 3rd edition. I realized I missed a '2' above when referring to IWD2 once, sorry for the confusion.
Drago2005-02-01 10:50:51
Its the reason I didn't like IWD1.. 2nd edition sucked majorly
Shiri2005-02-01 13:13:50
I just dealt with it, hadn't done 1st ed so it was all I knew till I got to NWN. Which was a rather bent 3E itself, I mean, parrying, HUH? Also, IWD+2 weren't Bioware? Ohhhhhh. That explains a lot, thanks Olan! Although actually I LIKED the constant getting swamped by quests in C2, I missed it when it was gone, felt sooo linear.
Also, darksun books rocked (I mean, I went around on the web called Sorak for YEARS) but by the time I heard about the games they were like 10 years out of date, so ehhhh. I hated the whole "Eye of the Beholder" crap (don't even get me started) so I figured I'd best keep my opinion of DS clear.

DragonLance was my favorite series of books and computer games, although I only ever played Forgotten Realms with pen and paper (I played from 8-11, 12 yrs old).

I still say fallout/fallout 2 are better than any pc-based rpgs, barring Planescape: Torment
Unknown2005-02-01 16:27:12
Betrayal at Krondor, unbelievers! No better cRPG game, I say.
Proof: that's the only game in which I didn't (and didn't had to) bash AT ALL - I mean the lusternian type of bashing, for exp/gold. Not that the fights were so easy (they weren't), but the combat system is much more realistic then D&D, when a level 5 fighter has 5 times the HP of a level 1 fighter, or fallout, where a guy in a combat armour can take three eye-shots and, if he doesn't get a nasty critical, he won't be even hurt badly.
Also, the spell system is cool and the music is great - for a game of BaK's age, that is.

NWN played, got through it. SoU played beat it. HotU played still haven't finshed it.
Fallout and Fallout 2 i'll play when i find the Cds again. Never got around to installing them either
KotOR now that was good, i mean who doesn't want to be a Jedi .. Waiting on KotOR 2 to come out on PC.. Cause i'm one of those people that won't touch an Xbox with a 50ft pole.. Its a paperweight/doorstop to me

Finally! A purpose for an Xbox! Though I must say, Xbox does have some nice games, KotOR being one of 'em. NWN is one of the games I would like to get my hands on, but I really don't do much PC gaming.

OK, gotta step in here to represent.
XBox rocks. Better graphics, faster loading times, and more memory (all internal). Games started out lame, but now, most of the best games are available (although GTA games come out 6 months after PS2 release).
I am somewhat biased by the fact that my laptop ain't tech enough to play games like KotOR effectively, so XBox is the only way I get to play them
KotOR was excellent, KotOR2 is not as good, but still pretty fun, so far. My biggest beef with KotOR2 is that I still have like, 2 planets left to go and I'm 27th level or something absurd. Much like KotOR, I wish the game were harder...but, Lucasarts has to be sure they are appealing to the kids
Side note, KotOR2 also wasn't done by Bioware (Obsidian did it) and I think Obsidian did a lot of the work on SoU expansion too. Obsidian does some good work (they have a lot of the good people from the old Black Isle company), and some people think the dialogue is better, but I prefer Bioware.
Shiri- Yes, the IWD series was not related to Bioware at all, excepting that it used the same basic game engine, which was probably owned by Black Isle or Interplay, not Bioware. They didn't write the story, at the least, which was the biggest failing of both games.

KotoR 2: Really good game, and they get kuddos from me for giving a 'dark' theme and tone to a Star Wars anything. Its been tried a million times, but KotoR 2 managed to pull it off.
Some of the names are a bit lame, but if your knowledge of Latin or Greek is low, then you wont even notice how cheesy they are...
The expanded levels, PrCs (Although I still wish you could opt out of them.) The new modification and item creeation stuff, is good. Up until the death of the first of the three Sith Lords, the game is great, then it goes down hill fast. I think they were running out of space and decided to condense the last 10 hours of game play into 45 minutes... prolly shoulda expanded the last part of Talos more and ended it there, but oh well. Story was good up until those last hour really.
Still fun to play through, and enough new events and new skills to make playing through a couple of times worthwhile, but then again like most console games, I found it far far to short.

I found myself playing through KOTOR 1 with a feeling of .. Hmm I like the story but I hate this game. It was very strange.
I really disliked the way they did the classes, and basically forced you down very simple paths.

Nementh2005-02-01 23:08:06
I looked at both Kotor and Kotor II as an action RPG, which made the class choices seem great But yeah I know what you mean. There were times I SO wanted to multiclass, or raise scroundral level instead of Jedi level.
Daganev2005-02-01 23:40:33
I think the fact tha they even offer a scoundrel class in a combat system that does not allow you to navigate around people is just silly.
They also force you to use Jedi weapons, and the colors mean abosulutly nothing.
Maybe I'm just spoiled by PC games.

Fable was alright for XBox, but again, too short and too easy (I beat it in a week of not-so-hardcore gaming).

Fable was good... although I really wanted a shield.
Wish the magic system was a bit more intuitive
But I loved the Archery (phear my goodie two shoe archer that was killing Stone Elementals from a great distance away with one shot.)
