I likewise find it very difficult to understand why Haliyzin's wonderfully well done and detailed artwork got only a merit, and some random drawing of a chick with wings and a weird nose was the winner.

I don't quite understand it either, as I believe Haliyzin is a much better artist than I am and have been learning from her work. I actually often question why my artwork wins, but since I don't know who to ask, I can't learn what they like about it.

Either way, people seem to like my work, including the person who commissioned me to draw her character. If you have a problem with it, I invite you to explain to me what you don't like, so I can take your critique into consideration and better myself.

It looks nice, but it's too cartoony, and the nose looks extremely weird. It's not bad, it's just that it could use better coloring/shading, as well as the aforementioned nose.

Seriously, some of the work you do is really great and you deserve the winning spot on quite a few occasions (I personally loved the "Lessons" one) but I just didn't understand it here.

Thank you for the input! I know the nose is a bit off, since I'm having trouble settling on a nose style. As for the cartoony style, I am generally not a realism painter. I'm trying to move towards a more realisitc style though, hence the background.

She is a ferocious undead loboshigaru and is gruesomely twisted by the power of the Taint. Perhaps once hyena-like in appearance, she stands six feet tall even as she is hunched over. Covering her gaunt form is oily, dirty and matted fur, light brown fading to chocolate at her muzzle, the same colour covering her back in a series of spots. Her arms and her long, thick tail are bulky and covered in dark green scales rather than fur, and move with jerking, unnatural movements. Her hands are tipped in wicked black talons that constantly pierce her own palm, leaving it a scarred mess. Stringy and matted hair falls around to her neckline, shielding one of her eyes from view. Her one visible eye, almost always pried wide open, is bloodshot yellow with a glowing red iris that smoulders with hatred, and the constant snarl on her muzzle reveals razor-sharp teeth like the blades of a saw. Her breathing is laboured, snorts escaping her nose with each exhale. A single scar slashes the left side of her muzzle open, the exposed flesh coloured teal. She is wearing barbed robes of gold-etched chitin, a brace of darts, a crimson silk rope belt hung with golden bells, a pocketbelt, a blackened steel jakari frogge, a multicoloured mosaic collar, a necklace of jewelled raindrops, a garnet cuff bracelet of the Destroyer, an ashen cuff bracelet of Deception, a braided ring of bloodstone and emerald, a thin opal band, an etched turquoise ring, an etched coral ring, a thin amethyst band, a thin ruby band, a braided ring of opal and moonstone, an etched beryl ring, a thin emerald band, and an etched opal ring.

I'd just like it noted that the one with Synl was considered the best one.

Looking at all the previous winners, I think I lost out on the "distinctly lusternian" part, since most of the higher-ranked ones and winners seem to be pictures of NPCs and gods, or contain divine symbols, etc, rather than juuuust player pics. This is just speculation, though. My Glomdoring looked rather generic.

So I'm trying to make the next one more Lusternian, with a couple players and an NPC in a very Lusternian location. Except, Meleris looks like a mudkip when I draw him.
